My Cat Has a Broken Leg, How Can I Help It Heal?

Readers, Bany19 needs our help! Her poor kitty broke his leg, but she can't stop him from moving around. Read more about her dilemma:

Let me start out by saying that I adore this online group. Everyone in this group is very friendly and helpful . . . it is comforting to have a place to go to with questions and concerns.

Anyway, I need some advice about my cat. Hedwig is 11 months old, and two weeks ago he broke one of his hind legs. I rushed him to the emergency vet and they took x-rays (he sustained a transverse fracture of the tibia . . . fibula was not broken). The emergency vet splinted his leg and said that he needed to be re-checked once a week. When we went for the second check-up the vet took off the splint to examine his leg and determined that the fracture was still moving around too much and needed to be casted.

Hedwig is doing well now and is acting like himself again. My concern is this: the vet told me to keep the cat in a kennel at all times but my cat HATES to be locked up in a kennel . . . he actually gets pretty violent and throws himself up against the walls, bites the wire door (he cut himself) and seriously stresses himself out. As a compromise to Hedwig, I have been keeping him locked up in my small bathroom during the day while I am not at home. When I am at home I have to let him out because as soon as he hears me come in the door he starts to meow a lot and scratch at the door. He is able to hop up on the couch and the bed (which I know he shouldn't be doing and I prevent it if I can catch him doing it in time) and he walks around some with his broken leg trailing behind him.

For the most part, he lays in my lap or on his little cat bed on the floor and does not move around a whole lot, but I am concerned about how much movement is acceptable and what I can do do help his little leg heal. I am wondering if anyone has any feedback about this. Am I doing him a serious disservice by allowing him to move around the apartment? What can I do to make this healing process go by smoothly? We have 3 more weeks to go!!!

Do Tell: Has Your Pet Ever Been Mistaken For a Human?

There are many excuses to give when attempting to avoid jury duty, but I think being a cat is a pretty valid claim. For Boston resident/feline Sal Esposito, this is no cop-out. Sal’s owners, Anna and Guy Esposito, consider Sal a family member and listed him on the US Census under “pet.”

When Anna tried to disqualify Sal, the reason being “he cannot speak English,” the request was declined. So now Sal is expected to appear in court on March 23. Anna and Guy hope to have this snafu sorted out soon. If they don’t though, Anna and Guy are completely open to bringing Sal to court!

Ask Casa: Cat Hair on Curtains

Dear Casa,
You recently posted a story about hanging curtains. All of my curtains have been hanging happily for a while now, but they get a lot of cat hair on them! Taking them down is a pain because the curtain rod has a little screw to keep it from moving around. I live alone, so using the vacuum was scary and I thought I might pull them down. Do you have any suggestions?

Hi Scissorz,
Good questions! I'm assuming shaving your cat (kidding!) is out of the question, so I have a few other suggestions for you.

First of all, you might consider replacing your curtain rods with some that don't screw in. Check out Shopstyle for a range of choices.
If your vacuum has a long wand with a brush at the end, you should be able to safely vacuum your curtains hanging.
You can also just use a lint brush or a fur fighter to remove your pet hair directly from the curtains.
I'd also recommend purchasing curtains or shades with button tabs like the PB Solutions Button-Up Shade ($48), which you can just unbutton to remove without having to unscrew your curtain rod.
If you're partial to the curtains you own, you can just have a seamstress add button tabs to them, or do it yourself if you know how to sew.
You can also unstitch the foldover part of your curtains, and iron on velcro where the curtains were stitched together. So, instead of running the curtain through the rod, you just keep it wrapped around the rod with the velcro. Then, you can easily pull them off when you vacuum them.

Some of us Americans (myself included) are woefully unaware of who world leaders are. Like, do you know if Japan has a president or a prime minister? Do you know this person's name? (Taro Aso is the prime minister, and yes, I looked it up.) Well, I have another open secret for you. Somewhere in the back streets of Tokyo, there resides an aristo-cat who is really the Furry King of Japan. Here's some secret footage of him enjoying a repast of gyoza and beer! (As for the momentary stink eye - I think one of his subjects back-talked. He doesn't like that.)
