I'm so sick of those trendy, rustic antler candlesticks that I just want to go back to the roots. Remember pretty candlesticks? The ones you'd set your table with if your grandmother came over or you were hosting a dinner date at home? The kind you'll hold on to until you're wrinkly and gray? The kind you'd wrap up for a friend getting married? I love them. I want you to lay down an elegant tablecloth, dust off your fancy silverware, and slide a taper into a pretty candlestick for dinner tonight — even if you're eating Stouffer's lasagna. Midday Muse: It's All About the Candles

This classic Swedish Summer house evokes a relaxed pastoralism synonymous with easy, rural Summer living. Yet it's also unmistakably stylish. Out of this entire photograph, though, what really catches my eye is the candelabra above the dining room table. The antlers that hang down seem to be reaching towards the deer candle below it on the table, creating a pleasing pairing. I particularly love the idea of forgoing the use of an electric chandelier for a candle-powered fixture. It's so romantic and Summer appropriate.

Steal of the Day: Ghost Candelabra

Happy 103rd Birthday Eva Zeisel!

World-renowned Hungarian industrial designer Eva Zeisel turns 103 today! Though she is best known for her work with ceramics, Eva, a featured Designer Spotlight here on Casa, has designed everything from acrylic candelabras to wooden and glass coffee tables, and is considered by many to be the matriarch of industrial design.

In fact, New York magazine named Zeisel in its list of nine living Design Revolutionaries back in '07. Better yet, her work is in the permanent collections of museums like the Met, the V&A, and the MoMA, and she received the National Design Award for Lifetime Achievement from the Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum in New York in 2005. Honored with the award at 99 years old, she could have brought closure to her successful career, but she impressively continues to design new works of art today. And while the curves and sensuous shapes of her recent designs are certainly sought after, her earlier pieces remain relevant and stylish, a mark of a truly influential designer. Trend Alert: Advanced Etching

Dating back to the 1500s, etching, using acid or mordant to cut into a material, is certainly a thing of the past. There's actually an old cliché that I love: in an effort to entice a woman home with him, a man will say, "Want to come up and see my etchings?" as an offer to come look at something artistic. But ladies, these days etchings are something worth taking a look at. Designers have abandoned girlish mirror and glass etchings, using new materials like acrylic and plastic, using laser to etch, or even adding color like a tattoo. And these advanced etchings aren't simply decorative. Many, like the Ghost Acrylic Candelabra ($65), make a trompe-l'œil statement. See more modern etchings.

Cool Idea: A Car Turned Planter

I stopped by Flora Grubb the other morning to grab some delicious Ritual coffee and to check out the amazing garden store for inspiration and ideas. Before picking up a gorgeous spear-like Sansaveria, I wandered around the gardens, taking in all of the beautiful plants. I was particularly taken with the way Flora Grubb had reimagined this classic car. I love the way it's been "reclaimed" by nature in a rather Land of the Lost fashion. While this project is definitely more art installation than practical idea for your backyard garden, I do love the idea of creatively reusing unexpected materials as planters. What's around your house that you could re-use as a planter? Could you use an old candelabra to display air plants? How about using cracked bowls as flower pots? Tell me, what have you used around your home as an unexpected garden or indoor-plant vessel?

Madonna Wants to Re-Create Her Former English Manor in NYC

Since her split with Guy Ritchie, Madonna has parked herself in an Upper East Side apartment, moving on from their shared historic estate in Wiltshire, UK, the Ashcombe House. But, according to the Mirror, she misses the English countryside so much that she's asked her architects to re-create her country home room by room in her NYC digs. Let me add that the Mirror is not always the most reliable source, so this news bit still has rumor status.Apparently, she's hired people "to go out and troll the Upper East Side boutiques for candelabras, side tables, and period chaises" and even had the wood floors of her new Georgian-style townhouse "ripped up and replaced with terracotta tiles, similar to Ashcombe." There's even talk of bringing chickens into the Manhattan pad to make her kids feel at home - I'm going to go out on a limb and say that might be stretching the truth. Nevertheless, do you understand where she is coming from? Would you do (or have you done) the same thing? Or do you think she's nuts and should decorate like she lives in Gotham City, not the English countryside?

Love It or Hate It? Permanent Markered Walls

As an affordable and creative alternative to wallpapering, DIY Ideas used permanent marker to draw moldings, an ornate fireplace grill, candelabras, mirror chain, and a wallpaper-like pattern on the walls. It's not flawless, but its free-hand quality gives it charm. I'm not sure this effect is quite my style, but I think it works in this shabby chic bedroom. What do you think?
