Crave Worthy: Jethro Macey Sideboard

If you told me the words lace, sideboard, white, floral, lacquer, and modern could exist all in one breath, I wouldn't believe you - and I'd likely chastise you for being a tease. But impressively, those adjectives do exist all together . . . in the Jethro Macey Sideboard ($8,000 and up). The white sideboard has a lacquered surface and its doors shine with a textured rose pattern that emulates antique lace. I love how the masculine quality of its clean lines and mid-century-style legs are juxtaposed with the femininity of the rose pattern. It's subtly stunning, and would make killer storage for a modern bedroom, living room, or dining room. Macey also sells concrete lace tiles with the same repeating decorative rose pattern that's a really innovative style of surface design. To see the tiles, read more.

Before and After: A Buffet Gets Styled

Talk about changing the look of things! Craftster member Olga reports that this buffet, which is made from cheap materials, was purchased for $15. She writes, "I wanted to do something to help this buffet, and at the same time I needed to get more practice with different or new materials. For a long time I went back and forth on what to do with this monster, and finally, after months of staring at its ugliness I was inspired by an ad in Architectural Digest."

Olga reinvigorated this buffet thanks to lots of careful painting and new legs, which she removed from a table and attached to the buffet. I love how the skinny legs modernize the piece, while the colors make it feel like a piece of Pop art. Nice work!

Love It or Hate It? Boca do Lobo Forest Sideboard

The body and base of this sideboard is made of wood and covered with a branch-like cut-out that covers the whole body of the metallic (not mirrored) piece, which was finished with a lacquer for high gloss shine. According to the product description of this limited edition piece, the structure "transports the external nature to the interior" in a way that is "imposing and functional." No price was listed. What do you think?

A sideboard is flat-topped dining room case piece with cupboards and drawers that is designed to store dishes, glass, silverware, and table linens, and is placed against the wall. It's okay to confuse sideboards with buffets and credenzas; their use has the same, or a very similar intent.

When it comes to buffets, there's the all-you-can eat variety and the furniture variety. The latter is a type of table often found in a dining room and used to hold food platters during a meal. Buffets typically come with compartments and drawers designed to hold plates, utensils, and other serving ware.

Most often, this furniture piece is placed against the wall to the side of the dining table. For that reason, a buffet is also sometimes called a "sideboard."

Open House: How Do You Dress Your Thanksgiving Table?

When it comes to the Thanksgiving table, how you dress it is often as important to the hostess as what food sits upon it. Over the years, I've seen family members fuss over table settings, switching out placemats, rethinking china sets, and shifting floral arrangements.

I admit that I'm known to fuss over my Thanksgiving table as well. The first year that my hubby and I hosted Thanksgiving dinner for friends and family, I stayed up late into the night sewing a dozen napkins, pressing tablecloths, and arranging flowers. In the end though, it was all worth it. Not only did the food turn out wonderfully, but the table looked spectacular as well. Plus, as far as I'm concerned, deciding on color schemes and flower arrangements is all part of the fun.

So tell me, how do you dress your Thanksgiving table? Do you keep things casual? Is your feast a buffet-style affair? Or do you get formal with placecards and calligraphied names? Tell me all about it in the comments!

Having lived in a studio in the past, I've experienced first-hand the trials and tribulations of trying to make one room play two roles. I have many friends living tiny apartments who try to cram the furniture meant for both a living room and a bedroom into the same room, and let me tell you, none have succeeded. It's not only studio dwellers that encounter these issues, though. Sometimes a home office needs to double as a living room, or a bedroom as a workout room. If you're in the same boat, I have a few tips for you.

Philippe Starck's Louis Ghost Chair Gets a Makeover

Philippe Starck has no doubt had an influence on many areas of the design world, but he will never escape his Louis Ghost Chair. The 2002 design pared down the opulent Louis XVI chair and is as relevant, contemporary, and stylish today as it was seven years ago. Starck did try to reimagine it in a child size, the Lou Lou Ghost Chair, but Louis reigns supreme. The folks at London design shop Lifestyle Bazaar are taking one more shot at reinventing the thing in hopes of making it cutting-edge once again, rather than the design staple it has become.

They've asked nine designers and artists from various disciplines (street art, tattoo art, taxidermy, sculpture, furniture design, conceptual salvage, product design, and interior design) to customize nine Louis Ghost chairs for the London Design Festival in September. The chairs will be auctioned off to benefit Children With Aids Charity. One chair will be decked with colorful cakes, sweets, and meringues to be photographed by Rosie Day, and for guests of the exhibit to actually snack on. I bet Starck never imagined his precious set would one day become a buffet.

Found It! Gender-Neutral Bedroom Table Lamp

I noticed that several of you mentioned your love for the table lamp in my recent gender-neutral bedrooms slideshow. I'm with you on that one; it's definitely a statement piece and it does a fabulous job of picking up the subtle blue colors in the bedding. The lamp is the Doug Buffet Lamp ($500) by Stray Dog Designs, who also designed this Crave Worthy lamp. The lamp is made from hand-painted tinplate, has a paper shade, and can take a three-way bulb. I love its spiky flower finial; it really makes the lamp. It's also available in green . . . if you're into that kind of thing.
