There are few things uglier and more space-hogging in a bathroom than a toilet paper stand. Worse are the racks that clip onto your toilet. But if your home isn't equipped with a built-in TP holder, whaddaya do? Enter the Gift Tissue Box ($10.20) from Etsy seller lemontree77. The corrugated cardboard box is a simple cover for a necessary item, but it's charmingly cute, a bit romantic even, and it hangs easily onto your doorknob. Hopefully its delicate little tree motif will also remind you where all that paper comes from, urging you to limit your TP use.

Nice and New: Jonathan Adler Pop Menagerie Bird Box

Jonathan Adler has harmoniously merged two of my favorite trendy motifs, teardrops and birds, in his new Pop Menagerie Bird Box ($68), and I totally approve. At 10-by-5.5 inches, this little porcelain box won't hold much, but it will bring some whimsical geometric color and pattern into any room. I'd use it to hold keys in an entryway or jewelry on a nightstand. It also makes a great gift for the girl who has everything!

Love It or Hate It? Not a Box Light

Despite its looks, David Graas's Not a Box (inquire for price) is not a box but a lamp. The design transforms its own packaging into the lamp itself; after you open the box to find the bulb, cable, and instructions, you use it as the pendant shade. As clever and eco-friendly as it is, I can really only see Not a Box in an industrial interior. What do you think?

The Sh*t Box ($30) is a lightweight cardboard toilet that packs flat for portability, made specifically for outdoor use. Whether you're heading to Burning Man or your ole porcelain toilet is broke, Sh*t's got you covered . . . and it can even be used as a stool (har har). Comes with 10 biodegradable poo bags! What do you think? Would you buy one? Use one? Could be cleaner than a Porta Potty!

Casa Quickie: Reuse When You Move

Moving? Though it may be nice to support a local business by buying new boxes when you move, it's far from eco chic, and it ain't cheap either. When I've moved in the past, I've taken a day to drive around to local businesses like grocery and liquor stores to pick up used cardboard boxes. I prefer egg-crate boxes and wine case boxes; they're on the small side and not too heavy when packed. But, not all of you may have the time or patience to go on the hunt for used boxes. So, there's one company that'll relieve you of the task (and the headache) — UsedCardboardBoxes.com. As they rightly claim, they're the "cheapest, easiest, and most earth-friendly way to get boxes for packing, moving, shipping, and storage" — aside from getting businesses to give them to you for free. Basically how it works is they buy good quality used boxes from other businesses that have them in excess or they salvage brand new boxes that might otherwise be thrown away (misprints and overruns from box manufacturers), and sell them to you at a much reduced price. You can purchase the boxes in packages fit for a studio up to a six bedroom, or in stacks of mediums, larges, and extra-larges, or you can make a larger commercial order. They will also purchase gently used boxes from you if you have some you don't need! How 'bout that?

Weird Furniture: The Box

At first glance, this photo of Pieter Jamart's The Box ($552) looks like a stock photo of any ole moving day. But why would someone drop nearly 600 smackers on this box if it were cardboard? You wouldn't. To find out why, read more.

The design is actually a soft, foam cube meant for seating (or as a footstool), which can be coated with polyurethane to make it durable and water resistant for outdoor use. It can also be ordered in your favorite Pantone color if you're in the mood for branding — I'm partial to PMS 178. And while it's not actually a moving box, it certainly can be stacked like one. But, I supposed the bold "FRAGILE" label isn't necessary.

The Box, the new thriller from Donnie Darko director Richard Kelly, tells the story of a financially troubled married couple who receive a box containing a button. The next morning, a creepy mysterious stranger tells them that they will receive $1 million if they push the button, but someone in the world will die. The movie, which is based on a short story by Richard Matheson, is set in Richmond, VA, in the year 1976, so there's plenty of fun, funky styling to the set. Do You Have Window Boxes on All Floors?

Homeowners (and renters as well) tend to only install window boxes on the first floor of their houses. But I love the way the boxes of geraniums on this four-story white building look. On second thought, they're almost too healthy looking; they may be fake, and perhaps it wouldn't work on a more traditional house. Tell me, do you have window boxes on all floors?

Do You Keep Your Shoes in Shoe Boxes?

My closet is the most unruly area of my home, and my shoes are the worst of it. The thought of keeping them all in shoe boxes, clear plastic or not, is actually funny to me; they wouldn't last even a week. But I applaud anyone who can keep up with it. Organization Tips group member PopGal recently spent a rainy weekend organizing her shoes in transparent plastic shoe boxes from the Container Store.
She says, "Not only can I see where everything is at once in a nice, organized way, but my favorite part is how clean it keeps my shoes. I have so many pairs I love, but only wear a few times a year, so it was making me sad to see the dust build up on them." How about you?

DIY: Cereal Box Magazine Holder

With a spare roll of decorative paper from Paper Source, and a stale box of cereal taking up space in my pantry, I attempted a little DIY project this weekend. You know how I love my shelter magazines and all of my paper projects. So I decided to make a magazine holder out of my cereal box, which would have otherwise made its way to the trash bin. I'd seen magazine holders in the past with a diagonal side that reveals the magazines, such as this one. But I just wanted to conceal my glossy collection, so I decided to leave it rectangular. My issues were also a bit wide (Dwell), so I cut off the entire back side rather than leaving an edge to keep it in place, but they stay in place perfectly fine. All you'll need for this DIY is a cereal box, scissors, decorative paper, and rubber cement.

Here are the steps:

Cut off one side of the box (i.e., where the nutrition facts are).
Then, cut off the top flaps of the box.
If you want, you can cut the box on a diagonal, so you'll be able to see your magazine collection from the side.
Lay the box down on your piece of paper, and cut the paper to size. You don't need to paper the bottom of the box.
Spread one side of the box with your rubber cement. Then press the paper onto it.
Spread the rubber cement on the next side of the box, and press the paper onto it. Continue with the third and last side.
Set your magazines in the box. Fini!
