Get the Look: Tailored Gypsy

In Canadian House and Home's annual trend roundup, "Tailored Gypsy" was identified as one of its hot looks for 2010.

While bohemian style has been a mainstay in the interior design world for years now, this latest incarnation sees the boho look lose its scruff, and go for a more polished presentation. Mixing bold artwork, hand-dyed textiles, eclectic accents, and more traditional larger pieces of furniture, this look is a definite pleaser.

Inspired: The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus

It makes sense that a movie with "imaginarium" in the title would have some decorating inspiration within. Most famous for being the last movie Heath Ledger made before his death, The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus comes out in limited release on Dec. 25. Until then, I'm finding myself moved by all the magical, madcap, carnival-inspired set design. Here's how to put that inspiration to use in your decor.

Roundup: Perfect Presents For Boho Babes

Do you have a sis or a best friend whose bohemian spirit takes her to all corners of the globe? Does your gal pal love the look of layered textiles and unexpected prints? If so, then I'm sure she'd appreciate a present that will help her to decorate her home to reflect just that.

Inspired: Fab's Bohemian Rhapsody

I was intrigued by Fab's trend alert, Bohemian Rhapsody, which she describes thusly: "Bohemian style is poetic and a true bohemian rocks the theme utterly, completely." So, to follow this trend into the shelter world, I found some pieces that would work well with her finds, such as this Tracy Reese comforter, which is part of her plenty Home by Tracy Reese Fall 2008 collection.

The key to making this look work is to mix some unexpectedly luxurious items, such as the Arturo Alvarez Gilda Table Lamp, with the more organic elements. If you're stuck, just pretend you're decorating for an Eastern European countess who's married to a wandering bard, and you'll be set.

Coveted Crib: Balinese Dream

If you're susceptible to daydreaming about packing it all in and running off to a tropical island then I advise you to avoid this slideshow, as it will tempt you to book the first plane to Bali. If you have a strong will, though, check out the home of the Hardy family, who live in a five-story pagoda home that uses repurposed, recycled, and creatively rethought materials to create a gorgeous, dreamy home. Assisted Living: Bedding à la Anthropologie

CasaSugar Community member tarabeth asked in the Assisted Living group, "Who makes bedding (quilts in particular) similar to the quality and style of Anthropologie?"Good question, tarabeth! I love Anthropologie's bedding. Some other great retailers for equally romantic, bohemian bedding are India Rose, Garnet Hill, Ballard Designs, Brocade Home, The Company Store, and Plover Organic.

Does anyone else have any suggestions of Anthropologie-esque bedding retailers for tarabeth? Please comment below! And be sure to join the Assisted Living group!

Ace Hotel Pops Up in Tokyo

Ace Hotel began in Seattle and spread its wings to Portland, Palm Springs, and New York, becoming a boutique hotel chain that I can't help but simply love - see all my coverage (and tours!) of the hotels. Now Ace is headed for world domination, as it's teamed up with Japanese retailer Isetan Shinjuku to debut a popup shop for the holidays in Tokyo.

The shop, open now through Dec. 25, will showcase gifts in line with Ace's bohemian aesthetic and affinity for "uncluttered comfort." The products include collaborations with Pendleton Woolen Mills, Evan Hecox, Rudy's Barbershops, Project No. 8, Dean Markley, Wing & Horns, Mackintosh, and many others - many of which you may have seen in the rooms of their stateside accommodations.

I'm both really excited and really bummed about this, since a trip to Tokyo is not in my sights. At the same time, this seems to be a natural extension for the design-minded hotelier, which already cites retailer as one of its titles: some locations sell furnishings from the rooms and even artwork. Anyone in Tokyo going to check this out? I wonder if that gorgeous file cabinet ships overseas . . .

Color Theory: Mix Pink and Red

When you're talking fashion, there are a lot of rules about color. No white after Labor Day. Black and brown clash. A lot of these rules have fallen by the wayside now that people dress a bit more bohemian, but for interior design, they've never really applied. You can be more liberal with the colors in your home. There's no doubt about it that red and pink clash, but if you mix them purposefully, it works!

I love the color pairing of these photos from stylist Olga Naiman. The solid red corner headboard and solid magenta bedspread on the left were very clearly designed to be used together, and it looks chic in a bold way. On the right, patterned and textured pinks and reds were mixed in a very playful manner. Since it's a low, lounge-y space, there's no need for those formal rules to apply. You'll see in both images that neutral colors were used on the walls and furniture; this tames the palette a bit. Mixing these colors also gives them a new association. On their own, pink is girly, while red is seductive. Together, they are lighthearted and fun. Try this at home!

Home Library: Style and Substance

For 20 years, Elle Decor's chic issues have offered readers ideas and inspiration for their homes. I've been collecting a giant stack of dog-eared Elle Decor issues for the last 10 years, so I'm excited to announce that the best of the magazine can now be found in Style and Substance ($45) by Margaret Russell and the editors of Elle Decor. I was thrilled to receive a (personally autographed!) copy of Style and Substance in my mailbox, and couldn't wait to review the book.

The book's 240 pages are an embarrassment of interior decorating riches. Featuring inside peeks of the homes of everyone from Miles Redd and Sarah Jessica Parker to Yves Saint Laurent and Monique Lhuillier, there's plenty of inspiration to be found. Hundreds of spaces are featured, and each chapter is relegated to a different room, including living rooms; libraries and home offices; dining rooms; kitchens; bedrooms and boudoirs; bathrooms; children’s rooms; and terraces, gardens, and pools. Besides gorgeous images, the book also offers smart decorating tips as well as a source book that features Elle Decor editors' favorite shopping websites and stores. Style and Substance is a wonderful resource for armchair decorators of any style. With homes that range in style from bohemian to classic, there's something for everyone here. Margaret Russell writes in the introduction that

[Elle Decor's] most beloved design characteristics? Personality, passion, joie de vivre, and flair. It's true, our most dazzling stories feature people with fearless style who don't care what others think - and those who are curious, confident, and cosmopolitan will always find a place in our pages. And when offered a choice, we’ll take a bit of patina and wear and tear over brand-spanking-new decor every time.

I think that this is a timely decorating philosophy, and while we may not all be able to afford a marble-clad master bath or a custom-designed bejeweled chandelier, we can all aspire to create a more beautiful, confident, and chic home, and with Russell's tips, now it's a lot easier to do just that.
