Revamping a Forgotten Chair

I bought this chair a few months ago and it sat in my garage waiting for a makeover, it looked pretty sad but I loved the frame!

After a lot of spray paint, new padding, and some new fabric for the old chair she's looking pretty great now!

Before and After: Updating the Foyer

Last year I showed off my foyer to CasaSugar. In case you forgot here's what it looked like. I liked how it turned out but I've been obsessed with black doors and trim for awhile. Well, painting all the doors and trim in my house would be a major project - I thought perhaps I'd just paint my front door in the foyer.

This is how it turned out!

A $40 Craigslist chair that had been covered in a mint green polyester damask was a mess.
High gloss paint + funky suede fabric = a fabulous frenchy star for a tween girl's bedroom!

Sneak Peek: Emily Henderson Chats About Tonight's Episode of HGTV'd

Emily Henderson is one of my personal favorite designing ladies for many reasons - two of those being that she's got a great eye and possesses an immediately recognizable, very cool personal style. Plus, you can just tell that she's a really nice person. All of those qualities will jump out at HGTV viewers who tune in tonight to watch HGTV'd.

On this episode, Emily tackles the lackluster, cluttered family room of Steve and John, proud dads of two adopted sons. Their attic-level multipurpose room definitely has potential, but in its current state, it's a jumble of kids' toys, media devices, and old furniture. Luckily, Emily's the perfect person to tackle all of these issues. Check out some behind-the-scenes and reveal photos from the project, and hear what Emily has to say about the experience of designing for HGTV'd.

Before and After: Get Ready to Rough It in Style With a Decked-Out, Fully Renovated Airstream

Recently, we've been dreaming in Airstream. The retro vibe of an Airstream trailer is innate in its funky shape and aluminum hue, but, recently, many Airstreamers are choosing to bring beautiful hues and luxurious fabrics into their nontraditional spaces, like this renovated Burning Man gem. Living outside in comfort, luxury, and style sounds right up our alley.

We came across a pretty impressive project, named Runaround Sue, from New Prairie Construction. She was a pretty sorry sight to begin with, but the transformation is nothing short of amazing. The space is so rich looking yet completely practical. The best part of Runaround Sue? She's currently for sale! Before and After: Sprucing Up a Cane Chair For the Guest Bedroom

I love chairs. I love textiles and fabrics. What I didn't love was the chair sitting in my guest room.

However, when I stumbled upon this cane chair at a resale shop for $28, I found a solution to my "problem."

It needed to be cleaned and restained but it had potential. The stars lined up when I found a rug from Uzbekistan at Anthropologie - it was colorful, vibrant and had the perfect pattern I wanted for the room. It also helped that it was large enough to provide fabric for the whole chair for less than $50. Two weeks later thanks to my savvy bartering and some elbow grease, I brought home this to replace the original chair in the guest room. Before and After: House of Anaïs's Upstairs Loft

When we bought the house of Anaïs, it really was because of the lovely garden and the image we had of what the house could become - despite the purple-painted ceilings, silver Chinese writings on the wall, mint-green and peach toilets, all the excessive color contrasts and mismatches, and the dampish smell in the house. But it certainly took us some time to get to the lovely end result!

The upstairs loft area had two tiny bedrooms (one with a sink) and this mint-green toilet corner. We opened the space up into one spacious room, insulated it well, and added a new bathroom with a walk-in shower. I don't normally go for carpets since we have asthma in the family, but here I chose natural seagrass covering for the whole bedroom.

Before and After: Our Tragically Weathered Deck Gets a Much-Needed Summer Maintenance Update

Standard advice for deck maintenance is that it should be pressure washed and restained at least every other year. Let's just say that we haven't been that dutiful in our deck maintenance and leave it at that. It was definitely past due time to deal with our decks - as this photo demonstrates. As you can see, the redwood was gray and green - not the warm wood color with which it started life. Plus, there was lichen growth on the wood, and I was concerned about the wood's quality deteriorating. The last thing my husband and I wanted to do was replace the deck, since it's earthquake retrofitted and bolted halfway into our house's footprint.

We considered doing the pressure washing and staining ourselves, but since we have two levels of decking (see part of the bottom level below) that measure in at around 1200 square feet, this was no small undertaking. We'd have to devote two separate weekends for pressure washing and staining, and hire a babysitter to care for our toddler while we were working. So, we decided to hire Cal Preserving to come in and do the work for us.Want to see how the decks turned out? Keep reading to find out!

Before and After: A Spring Porch Update

Here's a post from CasaSugar Community member EllenM4488 from the Su Casa group: The porch in our house is my sanctuary in the Spring, Summer, and Fall. It is my favorite room in the house. I love to curl up with a book and drink some coffee in the mornings or sit with a glass of wine in the evenings. The room has an awesome lofty ceiling with a fan and windows that allow a nice breeze to circulate through. When we moved we put our old fold up patio furniture in the spot but it looked pretty sad.

Vertical Blinds Out . . . Drapery In!

I recently moved into a new apartment. Here is some of the decorating progress. First thing is first: get rid of the awful plastic vertical blinds. I have great 9′ ceilings and the blinds were not exactly accentuating any architectural details.

Poof, be gone! I did full height 96″ drapery panels to soften the space. The room seems bigger and much less harsh. The rod is mounted about 6″ above the window to give the room height.
