Cool Idea: The Float Bed

Designed in 2004 by Max Longin, a German designer and mathematician, the Float Bed was inspired by the idea of suspension. This unusual design also comes in unusual packaging. The bed can be easily packed away and moved, since the packaging is part of the frame itself.

Float, which starts at $6,200, is made up of four stainless steel cords attached to wooden rods and steel bows. And lest you're concerned about the bed's stability, rest assured knowing that it can hold up to 2,645 lbs!

While this might not be the bedframe for everyone, I'm sure it will strike a chord for the minimalist modern lovers out there. Are you a fan?

Room Therapy: More Affordable Bedframe

Kdupps wrote in saying, "I'm incredibly in love with this iron and brass bed from Anthropologie, and I was wondering whether there were similar beds that were more reasonably priced. Either way, the bed is definitely craveworthy!"

The bed, which is classically vintage in design, has a trompe l'oeil painted brass and a white-wash patina-and it sells for$1,360.00-$1,460.00.

While the J.C. Penney Meredith steel bedframe ($229, on sale) definitely isn't a dead ringer for the Anthropologie bed, it's still quite adorable, and I love that you could hang bright printed curtains from the canopy rails.

Ask Casa: A Bedroom Update

Dear Casa,

I purchased an Ikea malm bed frame in birch veneer about a year ago. My decor has changed drastically in that year and the bed no longer matches. Do you know of a way to paint or stain the bed, so that it doesn't stick out like a sore thumb?

Dear PrimpPrimp,

In an earlier post, I wrote about how Danny Seo used iron-on veneer to improve an old table. He had great results, but he was also working with a larger surface area, and it seems as if trying to do so on all of the disparate surfaces of your bed might be really time-intensive. Painting would definitely be an easier option.

If you want to paint your veneer, start your project by first repairing any problems with the veneer. Use wood glue to reattach any peeling veneer. If the veneer is cracked or missing, you'll have to glue on new pieces to ensure a consistent surface. Then, clean the surface with some soapy water and let it dry. Lightly sand the veneer, and then dust it so the surface is clean. You'll need to apply at least two coats of primer such as Kilz low-VOC primer, making sure to sand between coats. Finally, apply two coats of paint, and you're set!

As far as staining veneer, you can only successfully stain veneer if it has solid wood beneath the veneer. In the case of the Ikea malm bedframe, it's made of fiberboard and particleboard, so it's not advisable to stain it.

Although sometimes I can't decide whether or not I actually like the ABC series Men In Trees, I can tell you that I've always been a fan of main character Marin's charmingly rumpled cabin. It's so homey, and the fact that she's often found hibernating under a woolen blanket or stretched out in front of a roaring fire only reinforces this notion.

The charm of Marin's cabin is enhanced by its jumbled, comfortable, and Alaskan shabby-chic appearance. Marin probably bought most of this furniture from tag sales and the occasional Elmo, Alaska flea market, which is a perfect way to get this comforting, eclectic look. Marin paired a mix of unmatched dining chairs with a solid wood table, so take a cue from her and make this mismatched look work. She also successfully mixed feminine elements with heavier, masculine wooden furniture. For the bedroom, she chose a classic wrought iron bedframe whose starkness is tempered by lovely heirloom quilts.

To finish the look of Marin's cabin, choose a mix of warm and cool paint colors in eclectic tones. Pair damask or floral curtains with sheer white cotton panels for privacy from Elmo's mostly male population. Don't forget some cozy throw rugs and nature-inspired accents. While you're at it, make sure to keep your hearth ready for an impromptu snogfest before a crackling fire.
