You're probably thinking the phrase "chic bean bags" is an oxymoron, right? Well, considering how far the bean bag industry has come since the days of Lillian Vernon monogramming, I have to disagree. The slouchy seat, in many cases, has abandoned its deflated globe-like shape in favor of cringe-free forms less synonymous with bachelor pad and nine-year-old decorating. Marimekko and Dwell have chimed in with their hip, bold patterns, and Stéphanie Marin cooked up Livingstones, the modern anti-bean bag alternative. No more sticky vinyl to peel your face off of when you wake up to Super Mario Brothers tunes and a fistful of Gushers melting in your hand. Bean bags have done gone and graduated; there's no reason to be ashamed anymore.

Weird Furniture: Octopus Chair

The Octopus Chair (price unlisted), fashioned from pairs of recycled jeans and polystyrene balls, is a multi-shape beanbag and a cross "between a chair and a lounge sculpture," allowing you "to adapt your seating to your interior." In some cases of weird furniture, I am willing to suspend my inclination towards normalcy in favor of something that is "weird" yet still cool and "artsy." But dear Mr. Octopus, I do not like you, find you cool or artsy, or care that you can transform into multi-shapes. You simply aren't good-looking enough to pass my test with swimming colors or to ever sea my living room. I hope this news doesn't break your third heart.

Crave Worthy: Verzelloni Zoe Chair

I never imagined myself describing a bean-bag chair as crave worthy. This Verzelloni Zoe Chair (price unlisted), the traditional bean bag's older, cooler sister, is an exception though. Not only does the chair look extremely comfortable, (and filled with polystyrene pearls, how could it not be?) but its relaxed, '60s look and shape is elegant enough to show off. Just don't put it anywhere near my office, or I won't get a stitch of work done . . .

Better Than Your Average Bean Bag

Bean bag chairs are a staple of rec rooms and college dorms. They're comfy, versatile, and even available in sports motifs to match your favorite team (please, just don't). But rarely has anyone accused a bean bag chair - particularly one shaped like a football - of being chic.

That's why I'm itching to sink down into one of these high-design interpretations of the good ol' vinyl bean bag. These three bags would sit attractively in the corner of any well-decorated room, ready to make an appearance anytime you needed some extra seating for guests.

Crave Worthy: Le Beanock Hammock

It's a bean bag! It's a hammock! It's possibly the most comfy thing ever. Designed by Tracie Herrtage, Le Beanock is an indoor hammock made from sailcloth and stuffed plush like a beanbag. It's available in a large size for around $978 and a smaller version for about $500.

Do You Own a Beanbag Chair?

When I was a kid, I had the pink striped monogrammed beanbag chair from Lillian Vernon that every other child in America had. It was indulgently comfortable, and the perfect size for a little girl like me, but it certainly didn't win any design awards. Even if you have a chic bean bag chair, I think we should leave the oversize, polypropylene-filled cushions to the kids or the students. They're perfect for 90210's student lounge, where comfort, not design, is the aim. Do you have one?

Do You Have a White Picket Fence?

There's nothing like a curious agapanthus peering its head out of your white picket fence on a warm Summer day. A white picket fence may be uninspired, but it's still a classic, like an L.L. Bean bag or a pair of canvas sneaks. You almost can't go wrong with one.

Nice and New: Flor Sitting Pretty Rug

Flor tiles have always seemed casual to me, modern and piecemealed as they are. The new Sitting Pretty Rug ($374.70 for 8x10), though, looks striking and fresh in this formal living room. No, it's not a stuffy Persian import, but step onto its brilliant orange-and-pink stripe pattern and you'll feel like you're somewhere. On the other hand, it would look just at home with a bean bag chair and a cozy low coffee table as it does with this Louis Ghost Chair, delicate wainscoting, and curvy French settee. I'm sold.

Casa Beta: Sumo Omni

Recently, I got to test the Sumo Omni ($149). While it's technically a bean bag, it's a lot cooler than the bean bags I grew up with. The Omni is close to indestructible, made from rip-proof nylon and filled with Sumo Beads (aka tiny white foam balls). It's big, too, measuring in at 4.5 by 5.5 feet.

The Omni is definitely comfortable, and it's become a favorite spot for breaks in the office as well as for casual office meetings. I'd definitely recommend it for a children's room or a rumpus room arrangement. However, I don't really see how any grown-up home could integrate it successfully into most rooms. It's one of those classic decorating problems: Sometimes, the more comfortable something is, the less you want to actually see it in your home.
