Hold It! That's What One Teacher Is Telling Students

How long can your child hold it? If she's in Stephanie Warner's class at a Brooklyn elementary school, let's hope she can hold it for a while!

The fifth-grade teacher has enacted a new policy to keep kids sitting at their desks and out of the bathroom. At the start of each week, the teacher hands out three bathroom passes to each student in the class. The kids then have three windows throughout the day during which they can use the vouchers to visit the restroom. If the tots still have their passes at the end of the week, they can trade them in for small prizes like pencils and erasers. According to one of the students, the teacher started the new program "because some kids just go for fun. They just want to skip class."

Though New York public schools do not have a bathroom limit policy, parents are up in arms complaining that their children's health - bladder infections and more - is at stake. The school's principal has put an end to the program following the uproar, but I want to know - do you agree with the teacher's reasoning behind instituting the policy?

When we first looked at our house before buying it, we knew we wouldn't be able to live long with this 1990s bathroom, complete with plastic marble tub. So it took us two weeks from moving to start the demo process and get to work! Not only is this the only bathroom in the house, but it is tiny! I mean really tiny: if I remember correctly it is just five by seven feet. We opted to keep the same configuration since there was really no other way! We searched high and low for a small sink with storage and luckily Ikea had just what we were looking for, of course at a great price, too! The whole process took about three weeks and a couple more months of fine tuning. It isn't quite done yet, as I still have a few ideas for the mirror and have to eventually find some artwork, but it has come along way from the 1990s!

7 Strength Training Moves You Can Do in the Bathroom

The title of this post might make you cringe if you're picturing getting on the floor of a teeny public bathroom stall to drop and "give me 20," but I assure you, these moves are totally clean, since they're best saved for your bathroom at home. You visit the ladies room for other reasons besides relieving yourself, so take it as an opportunity to multitask and fit in a few minutes of fitness. Here are some ideas:

Walk on your heels while brushing your teeth. It'll prevent shin splints and cavities.
Do side leg lifts while flossing.
Whenever you visit the ladies room, after using the toilet, put the seat down and do a set of triceps dips.
After washing your hands, do 20 counter push-ups.
Do calf raises while blow-drying your hair.
Do some booty kicks while putting sunscreen on your face, chest, and arms.
Do squats while applying your makeup.

This month, Elle Decor featured Courteney Cox's new Malibu home on its cover. Before pursuing a career in acting, in college, Courteney took courses geared for a path in architecture. Needless to say, she was very involved in the remodeling process. Her entire home reflects a laid-back vibe, but her bathroom really did it for me: part sleek master bath, part beckoning boudoir. Strong marble and oversize iron fixtures are balanced by crushed velvet furnishings upholstered in a surprising hue.

Su Casa: The Scene at Our Loo

Just a little post today folks. When you think of that little space in your home called your loo, aka the bathroom or restroom . . . do you keep it sterile and think of it as just a place to do your business? Or do you actually adorn it and think of it as a room to escape to from the mundane world of the living room?

Our little loo is not a posh area with a bidet to boot, but I didn't even realize how I put so many of my favorite things here. Case in point, favorite pattern in favorite color as the wallpaper, lime green candle birds, apothecary bottles with pink flowers, branch jewelry holder with necklaces and bracelets, favorite picture and cashmere soy candle. Oh, and to answer your question (well, even if you didn't ask but have always been curious), wallpaper is totally a DO in the bathroom!

Su Casa: Our Bathroom Makeover

We painted our bathroom in 2006 when we bought our house. It was cute but busy and the floor was in bad shape. We retiled the floor, added a new toilet, vanity/sink, faucet and storage. We did all the work ourselves - never been more exhausted and proud. The total budget was about $700. My favorite feature is the letter I wrote and hid under the tile for future homeowners!

Su Casa: A Master Suite Remodel

We recently remodeled our master bedroom/bathroom. (Actually, we're remodeling the whole house, but this is finished!) I wish I had before photos. You wouldn't believe it. This bathroom used to be a very small green-tiled room from the 1950s! You know, the ones that look like a closet (toilet and bath in line with each other and a shower in the tub.) I don't know how my boyfriend got all this space; it's such a tiny house. He busted out two linen closets and my bedroom closet, and built on five feet. Quite the undertaking! Oh yeah, he also raised the ceiling in the middle.

I know it's a bit dark, but I think it makes it feel like a spa!! It's hard to tell the color of tiles: they're an earthy, brownish gray. Hard to describe. It also has slate tile and floor. Not sure if you can tell from this photo, but there is a sunken Jacuzzi tub with a bridge across it leading to the outside. That glass wall completely opens! Also, to the left of the tub is a glass-enclosed shower/steam room with benches.

The Bathroom Sees Red!

I recently redid my bathroom. Unfortunately I don't have any before pictures. Not enough foresight. It used to be a calming and boring shade of misty green. As I'm sure you've already guessed, it's been entirely made over with a vibrant shade of red! I love it. The old shower doors, which were getting stained and discolored in uncleanable areas, were ripped out and a delightful curtain replaced it. I added fun new knick-knacks and chose new wall decor and new bath mats. Still haven't replaced the towels however. Eventually they will match the bathroom. My favorite item however is the eye-chart. I created it using photoshop and had it printed through Zazzle and then created my own matte and framed it. The guys of the house had a fun time trying to figure out what it said (it hangs above the loo). The space is very awkward to shoot pictures in.
