Despite the fact that much of it conjures memories of school fair spin art, 223 lots of work by Damien Hirst grossed a record $200 million at a Sotheby's auction in London this week. Perhaps you agree with Andy Warhol, who said, "Art is what you can get away with." In that case, you'd snatch up Hirst's spin art in a heartbeat (if you had the dough). But maybe you're not impressed by his work, and you'd rather hang one of your own finger paintings on the wall. Where do you fall?Source

This Just In: Vipp and Helena Christensen Team Up For Charity

Danish design company VIPP and supermodel Helena Christensen have teamed up to hold a charity auction of Vipp pedal bins that have been given a fashionable makeover by fashion, design, art, and entertainment leaders. The bins have been made over by the likes of Bono, Michael Stipe, Mario Batali, Michael Bastian, Simon Doonan, Frederic Fekkai, Karim Rashid, Jason Miller, Todd Oldham, Alice Temperley, Mena Suvari, and more, and will be sold in a silent auction benefiting the Food Bank For New York City and Chernobyl Children’s Project International. An installation of the bins will be on display for public viewing and pre-bidding at The Conran Shop in New York through Thursday, Sept. 18, when an evening auction event will be held at the Winston Wächter Fine Art Gallery. Dorothy Draper Designs Going Up for Auction

A few weeks ago, I told you about an adorable little book called Decorating Is Fun!, written by famed American hostess and interior designer Dorothy Draper. She's probably best known for decorating the Greenbriar Resort in West Virginia in 1948, and I just read on Shelterrific that hundreds of furniture items, home accents, and artwork from Draper's Greenbriar are going up for auction starting Sept. 29.

You can already view the catalog of items online, and most of the estimated prices are surprisingly low, particularly when you consider that you'd be buying a vintage piece from a legendary hotel and a legendary designer.

I love the way Draper paired summery white woods with deep forest green, and for some reason, I just think this backgammon table is the cutest. What do you guys think of this look?

Cher Auctions Off Her Hawaiian Getaway

Singer-songwriter, actor, director and record producer Cher, as it turns out, also boasts interior design as one of her skills - and you can see it for yourself. On January 18, the entertainer will auction off her 8,821-square-foot, 6-bedroom, 6-and-2-half bath home on the Kona-Kohala Coast on the Big Island of Hawaii. The property, which she personally designed in traditional Balinese style, is part of the elite Four Seasons Hualalai community, and is estimated to sell for $8 to $12 million. In addition to a main residence, the residence includes five free-standing guest bungalows, four with bedroom suites and one with a media room and bar - sounds perfect for entertaining. House Tour: Maya's New York Farmhouse

For those of us who dream about leaving the city and living a more rural lifestyle, crafter, DIYer, and mom, Maya, may just be living out our country life fantasy. Maya writes, "After living in many different apartments and flats for most of my life (mostly in San Francisco), I always yearned for a home in the country. I now live with my family in my dream home, an old farmhouse in rural upstate New York. Most of it was built in the 1850s, the addition was 1910. All of the floors are the original wide planks. There's so much unique, dark woodwork in the downstairs that we've gone for a very natural palette with a lot of white to brighten the space and accentuate the woodsy feeling."

Maya notes that nearly all of the furniture in her home has been found via Craigslist, auctions, and garage sales, which was at first a necessity, and now a conscious choice, since she says that she loves to fill her home with objects and pieces with a history.

She says, "Since I design sustainable home wares, many of my prototypes and seconds end up being honored on our couch or holding our books and magazines. I have a lot of artists in my family, including my children, so the walls are covered predominantly with family art. The rest of the pieces vary from my favorite indie artists to some vintage prints. I believe our homes should be a unique reflection of those who reside there and if you're lucky be in a location that inspires. I'm quite grateful for everyday I wake up to the birds calling, and the neighbors' cows lowing." $5 Table + Beautiful CA Day = Perfection

I spotted this table at a "Daily Garage Sale" where one of our local storage units puts all of their abandoned units "stuff" on display under a tent in lieu of public auctions. I happened to find this adorable table amongst other chairs, tables and cabinets. I thought to myself FIVE DOLLARS!? This is one of those CasaSugar amazing finds!

I asked my beautiful best friend for her perfectionism and humor and made it into a fun Sunday afternoon project. We went to Home Depot and got some help from our local paint expert. "I want a really super glossy black paint," and he immediately handed me a can of paint, primer and directed me towards the paint brushes...

After setting up our supplies on the front lawn...along with some tunes and iced tea we were off!

While we were waiting for the paint to dry we took the time to paint another fun find. Along my travels in San Diego I got these coffee cup holders at a Salvation Army...and ever so DIY turned them into jewelry holders.

At the end of this amazing Sunday afternoon I had produced a fun vintagey victorian looking table...plus jewelry holders

This Just In: Paris Antique Dealer Closing, Sotheby's NY to Hold Huge Auction

According to the New York Times,
one of the most prominent antiques dealers in Paris, Ariane Dandois, is going out of business after 34 years and Sotheby's New York is holding the blow-out sale of her inventory. The sale of Dandois's sleekly modern three-floor Right Bank gallery and her warehouse on the Left Bank will take place on October 25 and 26.

The stock of over 1500 pieces consists primarily of furniture and other decor from France, Italy, Russia, Scandinavia, Spain, Germany, and England, particularly the neo-classical period of the late 18th and early 19th century. She also maintains a large selection of Asian and Indian Art, and Japanese screens.

The sale will take place in New York because 80 percent of Dandois's business is with American collectors and decorators, and is expected to realize as much as $16 million. This Just In: Gossip Girl and Jennifer Hudson Team Up For Charity Auction

The cast of Gossip Girl and Jennifer Hudson have teamed up with Deeply Madly Living to benefit the V-Day Foundation (an antifemale violence organization) and the Children’s Defense Fund, according a 5W PR rep. The starlets have each personally autographed a base of the Deeply Madly Living Celebrity Lamp ($1,600), a lamp with a shade made of 40 pairs of mirrored, incognito aviator shades resting on a shiny, linear stand, creating a sparkling paparazzi effect when turned on. Auction of two of these signed fixtures kicked off yesterday on eBay, with bidding starting at $800 and proceeds going to the charities.

The design debuted at last week's International Contemporary Furniture Fair (ICFF) in New York. It was originally constructed of upcycled aviator sunglasses but unfortunately, now is being produced entirely from new sunglasses, thanks to the demands of mass production. Tell me, would you bid on this celeb-signed lamp if you had the dough?

eBay, purveyor of thousands of used goods, is pretty green to begin with. But now the online auction house is asking you all to be earth-friendly, too. The eBay Green Team and sustainable style blog Ecofabulous have aligned forces, asking you to turn everyday items into fab must haves for a chance to win a $1,000 "shopping experience" on eBay and a personal consultation from Ecofabulous.

To inspire you, Ecofabulous founder and DIY superstar Zem Joaquin has given new life to a few vintage, used, and discarded furnishings with a little elbow grease and a few eco-friendly supplies. This stripped and refinished cabinet was one of her projects, in addition to a transformed telephone bench and a reupholstered couch. To enter, you need to send in pictures or a video of your eco-DIY project. Considering all of the wonderful before and after projects many of you have submitted to Su Casa, I'm sure you're up to the task!

Found It! Light Fixtures From Eastwick

I wouldn't say that the witch-centric drama series Eastwick is on the top of my faves list of this year's Fall TV lineup, but I will give the show set designers props for boldly mixing three very different (and busy) light fixtures in this kitchen. Each of the chandeliers in this photo would be a show-stopper on its own, but combined they create a space that's more about being an eclectic than a specific theme, such as Moroccan or midcentury. Wondering where you can pick up any of these three light fixtures? Then read more.

In the forefront is a mirrored star chandelier. There are plenty of retailers who sell these, but the Circa Lighting Mini Antique Mirror Star ($123) is a good and affordable match.

The other light fixture in the front is a traditional Moroccan lantern. Tazi Designs sells many variations of these, including this Bahia Pendant ($95).
The chandelier off to the right is a 1950s Italian lamp called a "Sputnik" chandelier. You can easily find these at auction houses like 1st Dibs, such as this Brass Sputnik Chandelier ($1,600).
