For some, flying a flag in front of your home is an explicit display of your national patriotism, and for others, it's simply decorative or just a social gesture. In any case, whether you fly your country's flag, a nautical one, or that of your favorite sports team, they do add a certain je ne sais quoi to your home's curb appeal. Do you fly one?

Just in time for the fireworks, the Vivre American Flag Pillow ($32, reduced from $80) can be yours for as many dollars as stars on our flag in 1858. Hopefully you like your dose of national pride in pink, because that's the only color available; I think Pop would certainly be a fan. Does anyone find it funny that this pillow is made in France?

For some of you, using a blueberry and raspberry tart as a centerpiece is the extent of your patriotic décor. Others may hanf red, white, and blue bunting and American flags galore all over your property — in addition to the requisite Old Glory toothpicks in every mini appetizer you serve. I usually go with some festive table linens and a few flags.

Memorial Day, which was originally called Decoration Day, was first used to honor Union soldiers who died in the United States Civil War. After World War I, it was expanded to commemorate all US men and women who died in military service.
Growing up, I always marched in my small town's Memorial Day parade, flute in hand.
