Home Away From Home: Chandelier Creative

Chandelier Creative is a three-year-old, full-service creative agency based in New York City with a focus on fashion, beauty, retail, travel, and luxury lifestyle brands. Among Chandelier's clients are Coca Cola, Four Seasons, Parfums Givenchy, Landmark Mandarin Oriental, Old Navy, Nanette Lepore, and W Hotels. Though the agency's client list is certainly an impressive one, you know me: I find myself more taken with the interior design of its SoHo penthouse, designed by agency owner, Richard Christiansen. Much like its work, Chandelier's space is slick, colorful, and imaginative and in every sense far from what the word "office" conjures in even the most forward-thinking mind. Here, a black leather Chesterfield sofa with matching tufted Louis XIV chairs and a Saarinen table set on glossy white floors form a creative conference area. Soccer balls roll about to lighten the mood. A Chippendale chair at a turned wood dining table makes a desk space, and an overflowing book case with colorfully spined volumes infuses the space with life and language. Cool Idea: Julene Harrison's Papercut Artwork

I've completely fallen in love with British artist Julene Harrison's papercut artwork - which you may recognize from my Love Your City? Say It With Art slideshow. From one sheet of paper, she cuts these ornate frames with stunning typography and intricate imagery inside them. Many have romantic messages like, "I Carry Your Heart I Carry It in My Heart" or "I Want to Hold Your Hand," and even "Will You Marry Me?" She's also created more eccentric papercuts like the one that reads "I Have to Return Some Videotapes," and been commissioned by a Finnish ad agency. Each is more charming than the next - so much that I was inspired to re-create a San Francisco-themed papercut like this one for a couple of friends who are moving away. To see it,read more.

I did a little Photoshopping to change the text to "You Will Be Missed," added in an airplane and a glass of wine, and replaced Coit Tower with a frame for a photo of my pals. I've made some papercuts before from paint swatches, but using thin white printer paper was much easier. Since I've been using X-acto knives for years for all of my decoupage crafts, I was comfortable cutting . . . but I can't compete with Harrison's talent for design!

Home Away From Home: An Office Made From Cardboard

Amsterdam ad agency Nothing has manifested its name in its office space by building it entirely out of cardboard. The idea was conceived by Alrik Koudenburg who wanted to use the most "nothing" building material he could find. The space was designed by Joost van Bleiswijk and uses a no-screw-no-glue technique. Beyond that, the walls double as a creative canvas for the creative agency, allowing clients and staff to leave their mark. Not only does it amaze me that everything from the desks, shelves, stairs, and pillars are made from cardboard, but that it all looks so polished and streamlined. There's nothing "trashy" about it.
