Lately, I've noticed the iconic stemmed wine-glass shape is showing up in clever serving pieces - such as this Jansen + Co. Casa Interview: Destination Wedding Planner Alison Hotchkiss (Part 2)

Alison Hotchkiss, the creative director of Alison Events and the author of Destination Wedding Planner, has plenty of smart advice on planning destination weddings. If you, or a couple you know, are planning a destination wedding, I highly recommend Alison's new book to lend a guiding hand in your planning process. CasaSugar: When you plan a destination wedding, do you try to use local artisans, caterers, and other services?

Alison Hotchkiss: I definitely try to use as much local support as possible. It’s cost-effective, puts money back into the community, and is a positive way to support the area. I will sometimes hire a local planner to serve as my eyes and ears locally, and then I have someone to help us when we’re there. Especially in smaller beach communities, a lot of negotiations and contracts are over a handshake, not a formal agreement, so it’s important to respect the way that the local community does business.

CasaSugar: What’s your take on wedding favors? Have there been any that have stood out? Have there been any alternatives that were creative or impressive?

Alison Hotchkiss: One of my favorite favors was from my Costa Rica wedding. All of the guests were given Holga cameras preloaded with film, so everyone was able to take photos throughout the ceremony. There was a big beautiful glass bin where everyone could drop their film and they could reload throughout the evening. At the end of the evening the bride took all of the film, processed it, and put it on the Pictage website, so everyone could see all of the photos that were taken.

Another trend I’ve been seeing is people paying it forward by offsetting people’s carbon footprint for travel. This is often seen on the bottom of the menu or program. Other couples have donated to schools or children’s community shelters. I’ve seen a lot more of that than people purchasing favors. I think it’s a waste of money to do a favor these days when there are so many other things you can put your money towards.

CasaSugar: How do you deal with gifts at a destination wedding?

Alison Hotchkiss: I rarely see gifts at a destination wedding. Most people know to not bring gifts and to ship them in advance. If somebody were to get gifts they’d have to pack them and bring them back. You’d have to arrange for shipping, and oftentimes if you’re staying at a hotel that’s something they can execute for you.

One other great story is that some of my clients, in lieu of wedding gifts, the client included a notecard in the invitation asking everyone in lieu of gifts to “pay it forward” and do something for someone else, be it a family or an organization in their name, and then to write it on the notecard. Then, when people got to the wedding, the guests had the same card that had their name and their table numbers on it, so they replaced the name cards with the pay it forward card, and we had this really awesome display of what people had done to pay it forward. They ranged from deep, meaningful stories to really silly stories, such as “Oh, I paid for the person’s toll behind you,” and someone else said, “I rescued a bird off the side of the road.” That was a really cute idea and a great way to say, Let’s not focus so much on material gifts, and focus more on giving back to the world.

CasaSugar: Once guests get to the destination, have you found a fun way to organize activities? Do you let guests know a schedule beforehand, or spring it on them as a fun surprise? How would you say is the best way to organize this?

Alison Hotchkiss: I’d say the majority of people these days are creating their own wedding websites, which is the best way to communicate all of the information that can happen. It can have directions, wedding activities, local things to do and see, all of that. Or, rather than asking people to sign up beforehand on the web-site you can have people, during the rehearsal dinner, sign up for the following day’s tours. We have used a chalkboard so it was more fun than writing it on a 8.5x11 piece of paper. Different activities we have done are a snorkeling adventure, massage, or horseback riding. It’s nice to not have to determine things so far in advance.

CasaSugar: Given the economic climate right now, if you were going to recommend one area where guests can squeeze their budget, what can be downsized?

Alison Hotchkiss: I’d say music. We always tell people to go with a DJ vs. band, it’s thousands and thousands of dollars for a band. A band can run from $2,000 to $10,000. That’s one area. Another is limiting favors. You can also choose beer and wine instead of an open bar, or limiting the time of the open bar. Pick your battles and consider what’s most important.

Another area is the flowers. Instead of doing flowers, consider using a combination of herbs, flowers, succulents, and fruits. We did a wedding recently in the tropics and cut bougainvillea petals from the local branches and made a carpeted aisle for the ceremony. It was so vibrant and so colorful, and it was free. Use what you have locally.

CasaSugar: What would you have at your destination wedding?

Alison Hotchkiss: All I know is I want it to be somewhere tropical (with good surf), laid back, and I would be totally happy with fish tacos, a DJ, and local beer, Oh and I think I am going to wear a short dress and lose the shoes!

Candy Spelling's Holmby Hills Mansion Officially On the Market

While rumors have been swirling for several years that Candy Spelling was quietly shopping around her Holmby Hills mansion, the home is now officially for sale. And at $150 million, it's the most expensive home on the market in the United States.

The house, which is built on the former site of Bing Crosby's Hollywood home, is a 56,000-square-foot mansion built in a French chateau style and sits on over 4.6 acres. The house is absolutely massive, with more than 100 rooms, although neither the listing agent nor the owner herself can tally the exact number at this time. With a beauty salon, bowling alley, screening room, wine cellar and - yes, I kid you not - a gift-wrapping room, you can see why the excess might be difficult to keep track of.

"Everything there is glamorous, and is luxurious and it’s really great scale,” said Sally Forster Jones, an agent with Coldwell Banker Previews International in Los Angeles, which is colisting the property. “There really is nothing to compare it to.”

Spelling, who's due to move into a Century City high-rise penthouse, which is only about 16,500 square feet, apparently won't budge on the price of the Holmby Hills mansion. Her attorney, Stephen Goldberg, told the Wall Street Journal "The ones who could afford it three years ago, can still afford it today."

How-To: Clean Out Your Refrigerator

Another year, another resolution. It's hard to eat healthy when your refrigerator is stocked with temptation. And it's hard to get off on the right foot with any resolution when your home base is a mess. So, it's time that we all get a fresh start this year with a clean fridge. You may think that the task only requires a dose of motivation, but there's a method to this cleanliness, and I'm going to enlighten you with it. To learn the steps to a cleaner new year, read more.

To begin, clean your kitchen counter and sink and remove everything from your countertops.
Take out your trash, and put a fresh bag in your garbage can.
Put any dirty dishes in the dishwasher and turn it on, or wash them by hand. Unload your dishes and put them where they belong: out of sight!
Turn off your refrigerator and unplug it.
Now, on to the real work. Begin with your freezer. If you have an ice maker, toss all your ice and wash the ice bin by hand. If you have ice trays, toss the ice and put your trays in the dishwasher. If you have neither, get yourself some ice trays!
Toss everything in your freezer except unopened boxes of frozen food. If you haven't eaten your frozen leftovers by now, you never will. If you have curbside composting with your garbage service, you can compost your food and even paper towels, instead of throwing it all in the trash. If you have a backyard compost pile, only place fruits and veggie-based foods in it.
Put the keepers on your kitchen counter.
On to the fridge. Work your way down starting from the top shelf and toss all of your leftovers. Rinse all your Tupperware and other storage containers and put them in the dishwasher.
Turn your dishwasher on.
One shelf at a time, pull every food product out of your fridge, tossing or composting it if it's expired or the sell by date isn't within the last two weeks. Put the keepers on your kitchen counter.
Apply the last two steps to the refrigerator door and any bins you have in your fridge.
Fill your sink with water and a good dose of dishwashing liquid.
Soak each refrigerator shelf in your sink for a delicate few one at a time. Scrub it well with a sponge. Shake dry. Spray it with glass cleaner, wipe, and let dry. Continue with each shelf. And remember, you can also clean with vinegar.
Spray the interior walls of your refrigerator and freezer and their doors with Clorox Greenworks and scrub your heart out.
Now, clean your vegetable bins by soaking and sponging them, and then spraying them with your Greenworks as well. Let dry.
Now, replace the shelves and bins.
Replace your food to your fridge and freezer, keeping them organized with some system.
Remove your ice trays from your dishwasher, fill them, and place them in the freezer.
Unload the rest of your dishwasher.
Make a list of what to buy now that I've made you toss everything.
Remove the Christmas cards from your fridge and store them. Toss or store any other paperwork on your fridge. Start fresh with a paper-free fridge, just magnets!
Wipe down the exterior of your fridge.
Now, have a glass of wine and relax.

Casa Interview: Tyler Velten

Tyler Velten, a student at the Yale School of Architecture, was recently featured in the New York Times article Lighting Changes Everything. However, Tyler wasn't interviewed for his architectural projects. Instead, his artistic re-use of found objects and repurposing of Craigslist furniture and even the hated plastic bag were featured in the article. Tyler recently found some time between his busy school schedule to answer some questions for CasaSugar about his home design experiments.

CasaSugar: What was the first object you found that inspired you to start augmenting your apartment?

Tyler: We moved into the apartment knowing I was going to play with the space. It is a gorgeous apartment with great natural daylight. When it was empty, it felt more like a studio than an apartment. The first task was to somehow distract attention from the white walls. We found a kitschy brass table lamp complete with a tattered latex shade on the street. Instead of placing it on an end table or dresser (which we didn't have), I hung it from the wall. Lizzie [Tyler's wife] has teased me for years about taking it down. As a relic from our first days in the apartment, the lamp simply cannot be replaced.

CasaSugar: How do you feel your architecture training has changed your ideas about interior design, if at all?

Tyler: I have been making art for many years now, whereas architecture is a fairly new adventure for me. Although I do think that my first year in architecture school has helped inform some of my newer pieces, like the woven light shade beside the bed, I believe most of my ideas regarding space were born a while ago. The real benefits of the program are the community of designers. I am surrounded by creative people thinking about culture and objects at all different scales.

CasaSugar: How does your wife feel about your lighting and décor experiments? Is she a part of the creative process?

Tyler: Absolutely she is part of the process. There are pieces she adores, and others, she could do without. Most of the pieces use non-traditional switches or are situated in awkward ways. My desire as an artist is to challenge our interactions and perceptions of functionality with everyday objects. In doing so this often inhibits their purpose. Lizzie is always helping me refine and focus my pieces, to make them intuitive without sacrificing their idea. She is my voice of reason.

CasaSugar: What projects do you have in the works?

Tyler: The real task in our apartment, and consequently the real derivation for most of my non-lighting projects, is to create more storage for our tiny apartment. We only have one closet in the apartment and the kitchen has one tiny counter top with a few small cupboards. I am constantly trying to find more storage space for our things. Although I would love to make a new bed and headboard, the real pressing projects are coming up with creative storage systems.

CasaSugar: When do you have time to work on this? Do you find these projects relaxing/therapeutic? What motivates you to work on them?

Tyler: I do not have much time because of school. Most of these projects manifest themselves over Winter or Spring breaks. Nonetheless, they do not take much time. Most of these projects take an hour or less. Aside from the grocery bag chandelier, every other project was quite simple. Adding doors to bookcases requires a bit of measuring, but the assembly is very quick, a few saw-cuts and a few screws. Although I love to design unique objects, I feel the most satisfying design is to re-purpose/recycle waste into useful things. By filling up wine bottles with water, then burrowing them upside-down in the soil of a large potted plant, one can make a great slow drip-irrigation well for indoor plants.

It is tremendously therapeutic to think of ways to use the waste that we create in unique ways. We throw away so much stuff, stuff that is really beautiful. It is very satisfying to make an object like a grocery bag transcend its original purpose by becoming an elegant light filter for a chandelier.

CasaSugar: What are some of your dream projects?

Tyler: I would like to have more specific big ideas, but that usually gets me into trouble. I can only hope to continue to experiment and play.

Ask Casa: Decorate My New Orleans Living Room!

Hi CasaSugar,
I need your help! I just moved into a one-bedroom in New Orleans, and will be living on my own for the first time. My bedroom is furnished but in my living room, I have a television and TV stand, and that's it. So, I'm basically starting from scratch! Can you offer me some suggestions for my living room?
My style is classy, urban, girlie, and colorful, but not outrageously so. I want comfortable, welcoming furniture, not like "sleek" or anything. And, I want it to look mature! I like dark wood, and maybe dulled blues, greens, reds, or yellows for fabrics, so the space has color but isn't too bright. I also want to get cool New Orleans artwork for walls, so maybe if the color of some of my furniture can bring out some of those colors, that'd be nice. I'd also like a pull-out couch for guests. My budget: as cheap as I can get for good quality furniture; I am a recent grad, after all. Do you have any thoughts? Anything would help!

Hi Brooke,
Thanks for thinking of me! I love starting from scratch: think of all the possibilities! It's hard for me to get a clear idea of your style, but I am going to try my best. I get the impression that you want a grown-up apartment. The best way to do that is to make conscious decisions about what you bring into your home, so everything looks composed. Beyond that, add original artwork, and invest in at least some good quality furniture.

I built a living room for you from the sofa up. I chose the Macy's Montreal Sofa in pear, which has plush cushions making it refreshingly casual, and warm but not overwhelming in color. It's also on sale, and available as a sleeper if you so choose. Next, an Ikea Ektorop Tullsta Chair is comfortable and classic but inexpensive. Try a Bemz slipcover with it to make it look more polished. Then, the Brocade Home Silhouette Side Table in Coffee is dark wood, as you like, and has nice feminine curves to give your apartment a bit of girliness.

A woven screen from World Market is inexpensive, and will add texture and an architectural element to your apartment. The Soho Bookcase, also from World Market, is also affordable and dark wood, and its clean lines will give your place a mature, urban feel. You can find a wing chair much like the Anthropologie Astrid Chair at a local flea market or antique shop (New Orleans has many) to add comfortable seating; have it reupholstered in a subtle botanical pattern with subdued colors, or a solid fabric with a nice texture. A low, round coffee table like the West Elm Angled Leg Coffee Table is welcoming and cozy.

Next, I chose a coordinating rug with other "dulled" but warm colors and a floral pattern for femininity, the Ballard Designs Calabria Rug. If it's out of your price range, a quick glance at ShopStyle will show you plenty more to coordinate (or check out these). Set a mother-of-pearl table lamp on a clean-lined Parsons side table in dark wood for a girl-y/urban mix. Long, silk or velvet drapes will finish everything off with sophistication. Then, add a mix of glass vases around the room (filled with fresh flowers, of course). Find a nice silver tray, wine bucket, corkscrew, and matching colors to create your very own bar; you do live in New Orleans, after all.

Then, pick up some original artwork. Check out some local antique print shops, and frame a lithograph of old New Orleans. Invest in a George Rodrigue or a James Michalopoulos (or his Jackson Square knock-offs), and a more affordable Simon Hardeveld. Restrain yourself from decorating with Mardi Gras beads and don't go overboard with the fleur-de-lys. For more accents, check out Hazelnut on Magazine Street.

Open House Recap: Shedding Unwanted Stuff

The list of 100 reasons to get rid of stuff that I discovered last week was pretty comprehensive, but somehow, I suspected that you all would have some more great ideas for getting rid of junk. So for last weekend's Open House, I asked readers to share your secrets for shedding unwanted books, clothes, home wares, electronics, and anything else cluttering up your house.

Not only did you guys give me some great ideas, but you're also inspiring me to do another major clean-out! Check out some of my favorites below.

Kendallina: I give old magazines to local women's shelters, and I save all of my books and give them to friends and family and encourage them to pass the books on after they've read them.
Omeletqueen: I take everything to the Swap Shop at our dump - that, or sign up for Freecycle!
SweetPeasMom: There are a group of girls here who want to have a clothing swap, which basically is where you take anything you don't wear anymore, and you and all your friends get to take whatever you want of each other's unwanted clothes. One girl's "this makes me look fat" is another's favorite item.

Loralei: Take it slow when getting rid of your once-prized possessions. It might be helpful to set small goals for yourself. "Today I will get rid of 5-10 things", etc... Stick to this rule: If I buy something new, something else is going to the donation pile.
Bea Arthur: Animal shelters are always taking old towels and blankets for the dogs and cats there.
Actorgirl21: I just donated a bunch of old clothing, knick knacks, furniture and just stuff to an community theater group. They're always looking for costumes, sets and props!
Sugardumpling: At my apartment, our lobby is a designated Give Away Zone... sounds tacky, but actually it's really cute. There's a table with a book shelf for donated books, compartments for donated clothes, and people put used chairs tucked into the table... I've found great stuff there as well as contributed a fair share.
ProperGray: I have a few friends that get together for room re-do's over wine at one person's house. It's kind of a shop at home thing. We all also bring 2-3 items we think they may like. Most get used and some come home with us.
Popgoestheworld: I hate having excess stuff and honestly I find the best way to avoid it is not to buy crap I don't need.
Mocelebgossisme: I know it's been done and said so many times, but I really believe in giving all my old clothes to either Dress for Success or women's shelters. I'm just so proud of women who take a stand and make a better future for their family! They deserve cute clothes too!
Vawilliams: I organize everything I've purged from my home by type, then I email my friends and family a list of everything I'm getting rid of. If I have time to take pictures I do, and include them in the email or direct them with a link to my flickr.com account.
CMPete: My office has a book exchange; we bring in books that we are done with to share with co-workers. It's a great way to weed out shelf-hogging titles and get to read the latest bestsellers. And it is fun to discover things you never knew you had in common with co-workers.

Open House Recap: Top 10 House-Cleaning Shortcuts

Ever since I saw this list of 10 things you can stop cleaning right now - much of which involves disposing of things rather than washing them - I've been wondering how we can make housework easier without making landfills fuller. So in the Open House this weekend, I asked you guys to share your house-cleaning shortcuts.

Several users mentioned the Mr. Clean Magic Eraser, which is also one of my must-have cleaning tools. The mysterious sponge manages to remove weird stains that nothing else seems to get off. But that's only the beginning! To see 10 more invaluable household hints, read more

Shadesoftrue: This user offers two great alternatives to throwing away dirty shower-curtain liners: "I use Method daily shower spray after each shower to prevent scum buildup, and I throw my clear heavy-duty vinyl shower curtain in the washing machine and it works... just make sure it's on cold."
Rothchild: "My secret weapon lately is the Magic Eraser. It cleans most surfaces so well (just don't use it on hardwood or painted surfaces). I never thought I would be able to wipe down the brown gunk buildup on my range, but it worked."
Saruuh: "Whenever I have leftover soda or beer, I pour it in the toilet. The carbonation keeps the bowl clean between cleanings."
Vintagesugar: "Here is a good tip for cleaning out tiny yucky spaces, like that place inside your electric toothbrush where nothing fits: Pour in a little hydrogen peroxide, which you certainly have on hand for first aid purposes. The bubbling bleach cleans out any gook and can be rinsed out."
Bettyg53: "I use lemons and salt to clean cutting boards then do the same to scrub down the kitchen sink. Slice up leftover lemon and throw down the garbage disposal."
Terriann: "Low lighting and candles will make your place look fabulous in the evening even if it's not immaculate. Tealight holders and plain unscented tealight candles are cheap and, when placed all over the room, they really make your home twinkle. Line them up on the dining room table for a simple elegant centerpiece too."
Lara16: "I buy cheap washcloths at Target and use them during the week to clean up counters, floors, dry my hands, etc. I use them for everything. I then throw them in the washer along with my regular towels, and they are ready to be used again."
BloodyFuFu: "I've recently started using a solution of dish soap, water, and a very small amount of bleach to clean just about everything. I have a spray bottle full of it and I use is on the tubs, the counter, the stove, even the carpet for little spots. It does away with having a ton of specialized cleaners and, depending on the soap you use, can smell pretty good too."
Ella1978: "If you have a stain on your floor (not wood) or your counter that you cannot get out, Clorox makes this product, a Liquid Gel Cleaner. It's blue-ish green, clear bottle ... let it sit on a wine stain or Kool-Aid stain on your counter for a few minutes, wipe, it's gone! It's great."
Cocoa: "Slice up a lemon and put it in a microwave safe bowl. Add water and microwave for about five minutes. All the mess will come off with ease, and it smells great afterwards."

Casa Craving Recap: A Home Away From Home

Last week I asked you to design a hotel room. The challenge was a little reminiscent of the final Design Star challenge. I also suggested that you take a look at the Home Away From Home posts, or take inspiration from some of the favorite hotel rooms you've stayed at over the years.

You can see all of the Home Away From Home Casa Cravings here, as well as the great lists users created. (TeamSugar has a great tutorial on listmaking if you're not sure how.)

Here are my favorite looks:

Look #1 was designed by htiduj, who writes, "I like to mix different styles, colors, and textures. The base of my hotel room is off white, but the ceiling is more of a creamy, golden white. The floor is the ocean-colored carpet. I love sleigh beds, and so I chose one whose modern shape and upholstery is really interesting to me, especially when you mix the upholstery's texture with the linen and carpet textures. The linen is a mix of the Marimekko Tree print (in both black and gray colorways, with the pleated linen and duvet cover in white. I added the Marimekko Poppy Print in pink as some of the throw pillows, as well as a Marimekko print of red/orange/blue poppy with gray, black, and blue dots to tie the bedding together with the floor. The pleated linen comes with pleated shams and a pleated throw pillow, as does the Marimekko forest print. (I like lots of pillows.) The side tables are off white, with crystal knobs. They match the dresser drawers. I like how they are traditional with a more streamlined modern curve. I would place the leaf lamp on each of the tables - so that the square shape of the lamps and hard stone texture balances out their curve - also adding more interest to the room. In a corner of the room, I would place the club chair and the striped chair. I like the bursts of color that they bring to the room, and they tie in all the color of the carpet and the throw pillows. Between them I would put the metal round side table - another classic shape but with a modern texture, and on top of that I would place the rounded flower-like lamp. Over the dresser I would place the shell mirror, bringing another texture and curve into the room. As for artwork, I would put the cutout print as well as the upholstered prints (but not the green one) on the walls, and add the Jonathan Adler "face" vases on the dresser top. All together, I think the room has character, openness, and a real fun and lively quality to it."

Look #2 was designed by katherynn, who said: "I saw a photograph by Aimee Herring that really inspired my hotel room. I picture my hotel room to be in an upscale, boutique hotel on the shores of Greece, with the warm, golden sun and the soft, cool blues and aquas of the sea. I designed my hotel-room suite with a living and dining area as well as a sleeping area. The bathroom is a luxurious one with access off the main area, as well as from the sleeping area. Keeping the whole area open was my main goal. I wanted to provide a room separation that divides the sleeping area from the rest of the space, but still have that open airy feeling. I want to be able to come into the space and have the eye travel all the way through the space to the back windows that look out onto the sea. I wanted to incorporate the gold and aqua into the space as well, so at night you still get the drama, and the feeling of being in Greece! When designing this space, I thought, 'This is a fantasy scenario . . . why not go all out?' So I did!"

Look #3 was also designed by toby321, who says, "For me, the dream hotel room is about comfort and cleanliness. The top priority is fresh, clean, and comfy bed linens . . . in other words, the Heavenly Bed (from Westin). To keep the crisp and fresh vibe, I've chosen lots of whites and creams and glass accessories. The walls should be subdued, so a pale stone color like Benjamin Moore's Hazy Skies in both the bedroom and bathroom. All metal should be silver toned, i.e. pewters and nickels. Otherwise, everything luxurious is best: the thickest white towels, the best skincare and candles, and fresh fresh fresh in appearance. A room that soothes and doesn't offend any tastes. Relaxing touches like wine and cheese, and good coffee-table books, are always a plus!"

All you design junkies out there probably know Yanko Design, which is a great blog devoted to the modern aesthetics of technology, interiors, architecture, and industrial design. Now comes the news that Yanko has opened an online store filled with crave worthy designs.

Yanko partnered with a number of luxe brands, including Eva Solo and Umbra, to fill out its inventory. The store features everything from computer accessories to the Sumo Omni Lounge ($149, above left) I blogged about a while back and this very cool Rosendahl Wine Tube ($99, above right).
