Ask Casa: A Cheap Quilt Alternative?

Hi Casa,

I was hoping you could help me with my dilemma. I fell in love with this quilt from Urban Outfitters. I'm a college student, and in a month I'm moving into a house that I'm renting myself, so money is really tight and I was hoping to find something inexpensive. I found this amazing quilt for $79, but by the time I really decided to get it, they ran out of it in twin size. My room is painted a light teal color, and I love the paisley pattern of this quilt. Do you know of any similar quilts or duvets that are out there, or at least a store where I could find similar style quilts without breaking the bank?

Casa Quickie: Use a Beach Towel For Casual Summer Dining

Leave it to Target to come up with yet another cool option for Summer dining. Partnering with event planner David Stark, a new collection of Americana-tinged outdoor tableware is ready to amp up your outdoor dining in the Spring and Summer months to come. I’m particularly fond of Stark’s idea for an on-the-fly outdoor dinner party. In House Beautiful he suggests using one of his Bandana Beach Towels ($12, available in June) for a tablecloth, saying, “Summer makes me think of spreading a towel on the ground for an impromptu picnic. So why not put one on the table?”

Before and After: Kimpossible's Spring Linens

One easy way to update your home this Spring is by changing out the bedding. Su Casa member Kimpossible did just that. She writes, "I've been looking for new bedding for our bed for a few weeks now. While I loved the old set, it's much too heavy for Spring and Summer. I finally found something I really liked today at Target."

What a lovely change! I love the updated color palette in this bedroom. The greens and yellows are super Spring fresh, and it seems that Kimpossible and I have similar tastes: I couldn't resist the Vintage Greenhouse Pillow ($34.99) either!

Kimpossible goes on to explain how little the update cost her (one of the great things about Target). She writes, "The quilt was $70 for the King size, and the small floral throw pillow was $35. I splurged on it since I picked this quilt over the first one I saw, which was $110 for the King size. I figured since I saved money on the quilt I could get a nice throw pillow, too. The two gold pillows as you can see are from the Fall/Winter bedding. The bed skirt and shams are ones I've had for years and were hiding in my linen closet. The picture above the bed we purchased several months ago, just after the last before picture of the bed had been taken."

Casa Beta: MIO For Target Organic Cotton Fabric Hammock

Target sent over some items from its new collection of exclusive eco-friendly outdoor living products designed by MIO. You may remember that I tried out the gardening tool set, but now I'm onto the MIO Organic Cotton Fabric Hammock ($59.99) from the collection. It's made from 100 percent cotton, and has an attached storage pouch for the hammock when it's not in use. To hear what I thought of this hammock, read more.

I conveniently have a small fenced-in area on my rooftop, so the hammock was easy to hang with a short piece of chain and a spring link - and also easy to take down quickly when there's a rain shower. While the hammock is weather-resistant, I figured, why leave it out in the rain?

The hammock supports up to 250 lbs, and while I can't say that my weight comes anywhere close to there, I will say it held up perfectly for Yours Truly. Still, I wouldn't recommend it for more than one person at once. Beyond that, it is super comfortable. The hammock's canvas is pretty wide (55 inches wide by 80 inches long), and envelops you like a big hug, while shielding the wind. I am definitely guilty of taking multi-hour naps in it, which is testament to its comfort. You can also wipe the hammock clean with soap and water, which is convenient. So as far as function and comfort is involved, it's fantastic.

Let's move on to the design. The main canvas of the hammock is a versatile, natural, off-white color made from thick organic cotton, and it has smart green piping along the sides. Attached to one side is a green storage pouch that is absolutely cheerful, and which turns into a bag when you want to take it on the go. When opened to reveal the hammock, the interior of the pouch is a modern green and yellow leaf pattern that is fun and summery. In other words, it's completely adorable. Sold? How-To: Shop Green at Target

I've shown you how to shop green at your grocery store. Now, I'm going to take a look at some of the eco products available at Target. Unlike the grocery store, where you're more likely to find "ingredients" for eco cleaning products, Target's green selections are easy to find. The company has made an effort to green its products, packaging, stores, and policies (read all about it here). This means that you'll get a lot more variety for your eco buck. Casa Beta: MIO For Target Gardening Tools

Philadelphia-based MIO, which was founded in 2001 by brothers Isaac and Jaime Salm, produces fun, modern, eco-friendly home furnishings and accessories. I recently featured MIO's new Tyvek textiles, and the brothers are also launching a MIO for Target line this month.

I've been busily testing some of the new MIO for Target products. Since I'm in the middle of Spring gardening mayhem, I first tried out the trowel, cultivator, and weeder ($7.99 each). They're made with bamboo handles and can be hung from your garden shed wall with a jute twine loop. To hear what I thought of these gardening tools, read more.

I found the quality of these tools to be excellent - and that's saying a lot. I have two trowels whose metal scoops have been bent nearly in half at the neck. I don't employ a delicate touch with my garden tools, and I don't think I should have to. Gardening tools should be durable and ready for challenges, including rocky, hard soil.

The MIO for Target trowel held up well through hard-packed garden soil, and the cultivator and weeder were both put through their paces while I planted, weeded, and turned soil in my garden boxes. I also appreciated how sleek the tools' handles were; they ensured a good grip, as well as no chance of splinters or massive callousing due to poorly constructed handles. Target to Debut Eco-Friendly Outdoor Living Products by MIO

On April 12, Target will introduce a collection of exclusive eco-friendly outdoor living products designed by MIO, which is known for its green design of sustainable, functional items. The line will include a watering can, trowel, cultivator, weeder, mini herb garden, solar lights, hammock, and composter all made from recycled and renewable materials, and will range in price from $6.99 for the trowel to $99.99 for the composter. I'm excited to see that Target is making an effort to bring sustainability to the masses through good design. I'm loving that curved handle of the watering can, and the compost bin has a beautiful design as well. Can't wait!
