Open House: How Do You Dress Your Thanksgiving Table?

When it comes to the Thanksgiving table, how you dress it is often as important to the hostess as what food sits upon it. Over the years, I've seen family members fuss over table settings, switching out placemats, rethinking china sets, and shifting floral arrangements.

I admit that I'm known to fuss over my Thanksgiving table as well. The first year that my hubby and I hosted Thanksgiving dinner for friends and family, I stayed up late into the night sewing a dozen napkins, pressing tablecloths, and arranging flowers. In the end though, it was all worth it. Not only did the food turn out wonderfully, but the table looked spectacular as well. Plus, as far as I'm concerned, deciding on color schemes and flower arrangements is all part of the fun.

So tell me, how do you dress your Thanksgiving table? Do you keep things casual? Is your feast a buffet-style affair? Or do you get formal with placecards and calligraphied names? Tell me all about it in the comments!

Preston Bailey is one of the world's premiere event designers, known for his elaborate tablescapes, whose theatric designs have festooned the events of Oprah Winfrey, Joan Rivers, and Donald Trump. You can catch a glimpse of some of those looks in his latest book, Celebrations ($37). But thanks to a new project by Bailey, his table settings needn't be something you can only read about in his book - or on Page Six. The Wedding Bell, one of the table settings in his book, which is also one of the most cost-effective, is made entirely out of paper. The look proves that you don't need an extravagant flower budget or a wedding planner to have stunning décor. Of course, you have to be crafty and prepared for a DIY. Domino has a wonderful slideshow of table settings to inspire your holiday decorating, each image more stunning than the next. I was particularly taken with this setting, which is given a dramatic oomph thanks to a vase filled with rich brown pheasant feathers. The space is otherwise very simple . . . a white table cloth, white walls, no curtains on the windows, white dinner plates with a subtle brown toile trim. But, the feather arrangement creates an instant focal point and gives it fall appeal. Of course, turkey, not their feathered pheasant friends, will be the feast on Nov. 27, but I can't help but say this setting would be parfait for your Thanksgiving party.

Does Your Thanksgiving Involve More Than One Table?

Growing up, large family dinners, such as Thanksgiving and Christmas, always involved a grownups' table and a kids' table.

Since most of my adult meals have involved friends, not family, we no longer have a grownups' and kids' table, but we often have to have two or even three tables to accommodate all of the guests. It's fun having everyone pitch in to set up, and I love seeing how the conversations develop with each table.

Desire/Acquire: Tea Set Lamp

The Anthropologie One-Lump-or-Two Lamp ($198) is quite cute in a British country cottage way, and I adore its espresso cup finial. But, I'd say it's a tad overpriced for a table lamp that looks so crafty, and that doesn't come with a shade. Luckily, there's a more affordable alternative that can be customized to fit your color scheme. To see it, read more.

Etsy seller Vintage Renaissance hand-crafts these Tea Set Lamps ($100) from vintage dishes so that each one is unique. You can choose your preferred color of Krylon spray paint for the base to personalize the lamp. Unfortunately, the shade is not included. I can see this lamp looking really cool with the right palette and a not-so-country-bumpkin shade. Personally, I'd go with a glossy white base and perhaps a tall, black, silk drum shade.
