If you've grown accustomed to the relative luxury of a closet space that belongs to you and you alone, it's often a reality check when you move in with a new spouse. Many times, your former sanctuary of neatly hung dresses and perfectly aligned heels is interrupted by the need to share that closet space with your honey's stinky sneakers and college sweatshirt collection. If closet space is at a premium at your home, and you're suddenly splitting one closet's space between two people, there are still ways to get around the possibly distressing mess that this closet can become.

The classic Shaker style of the Gaiam Step Basket ($29, from $60) may not appeal to the modernists out there, but I think we can all appreciate its functionality. Maybe it's just me, but I think the mother of every friend I had growing up used to leave her family's things (sneakers, magazines, laundry, etc.) at the base of the stairs to be picked up. There's nothing neat about leaving things laying on the stairs, but a step basket will keep things looking tidy, and you can carry it with you on your way up.

A couple of months ago, I snapped this photo of a neon light chandelier in a beat-box themed San Francisco bar called Double Dutch. The glam shape of the chandelier crossed with the sleazy, strip club associations of the neon lights immediately caught my eye. It was a perfect match for the hip-hop roots of the place, which was otherwise notably low-budge — a kitschy Lite-Brite above the bar, consignment boom boxes lining the DJ booth, and a high-top sneaker on display.

I had to stop when I saw this headline on iVillage: 10 things you can quit cleaning right now. After all, I love having a clean house, but I wouldn't mind being able to cut a few things out of my routine.
The list offers some great ideas, but I have mixed feelings about it.
