Todd Oldham Introduces Charley Harper to Old Navy

It's no secret that Todd Oldham is a big fan of the work of wildlife illustrator Charley Harper, considering that he co-authored a book with Harper. It's also no secret Todd Oldham is the creative director of Old Navy. Thus, welcome Charley Harper to Old Navy! A collection of Charley Harper books, games, and tees for children under $15 is now available at Old Navy and is part of the retailer's effort to target young moms on a budget. I'd call that budget beautiful! Although most of these trix are for kids, there's a great Charley Harper Coloring Book ($9.50) and a Memory Game ($14.50) that would both make easy, affordable artwork for your home. Stocking stuffers?

Home Away From Home: Chandelier Creative

Chandelier Creative is a three-year-old, full-service creative agency based in New York City with a focus on fashion, beauty, retail, travel, and luxury lifestyle brands. Among Chandelier's clients are Coca Cola, Four Seasons, Parfums Givenchy, Landmark Mandarin Oriental, Old Navy, Nanette Lepore, and W Hotels. Though the agency's client list is certainly an impressive one, you know me: I find myself more taken with the interior design of its SoHo penthouse, designed by agency owner, Richard Christiansen. Much like its work, Chandelier's space is slick, colorful, and imaginative and in every sense far from what the word "office" conjures in even the most forward-thinking mind. Here, a black leather Chesterfield sofa with matching tufted Louis XIV chairs and a Saarinen table set on glossy white floors form a creative conference area. Soccer balls roll about to lighten the mood. A Chippendale chair at a turned wood dining table makes a desk space, and an overflowing book case with colorfully spined volumes infuses the space with life and language. Get the Look: Warm Minimalism

This living room from Livingetc took me off guard because, while it's notably minimal, it still has a cozy, warm feeling unlike the sterile modern living rooms I'm used to seeing. The modern fireplace stove looks sleek and handsome, while the painted white floorboards give the living area a cottage-y feeling. I love how all of the furnishings sit low to the ground and relaxed, while the colored-glass vase appears to be the tallest item in the room. The Furniture: Pick up a dark colored (navy, green, gray) sofa with clean, modern lines that's low to the ground, or cut the legs on an existing sofa loose to shorten it. Find a white coffee table with a funky shape that's also low to the ground, like the Cappellini one shown here. Choose a simple, contemporary, white side chair that also sits low to the ground; try a design classic like the Nelson Coconut Chair or the Fritz Hansen Space Lounge Chair. Use other white seating for empty corners and nooks in your home.

The Accents: Go for a tall, colorful, blown-glass vase to set on your funky coffee table. Set down some interesting reading the table as well, and lay a cowhide rug in natural brown on the floor below. Finish off the couch with a traditional, navy-striped accent pillow. Hang an old sign or a meaningful word printed onto canvas above a doorframe or on an empty wall. Pick up some roll-up roman shades in natural linen to shield some of the light. Replace your old fireplace with a sleek modern one.

Overall, restrain yourself from buying or displaying too much "stuff." Create a clean space by using a near-white palette with an uncomplicated color used on the couch and a punch of color in an accent. Find warmth on your throw rug and fireplace, rather than in bright colors.

Get the Look: Ship-Shape Bathroom

No matter how many times I hear that nautical motifs are back in style, I usually shy away from the somewhat stuffy look. However, after coming across this very hip Spinnaker Shower Curtain ($75) the other day, I was inspired to create a nautical-themed look that even I could love. For this Get the Look, I've decided to put together a Ship Shape Bathroom that puts a modern spin on sailboat prep. Here's how to get it.

The palette: You really don't need to reach very far beyond blue and white, but a mix of light and navy blue will keep your room from looking too yacht-y.

The lighting: Install nautical-inspired fixtures that give off bright, warm light. Brass pieces work very well, as do round sconces that echo portholes.

The Fixtures: For faucets and other plumbing hardware, go with brass or brushed silver, and set the sink in teak or another wood that evokes the sides of an old sailing vessel. I love this Sonora Series Sink and Vanity, which reminds me of a ship's bow.

The accents: Here's where you can pull out the traditional nautical stripe for towels, bathmats, and curtains. Stay away from seashells in favor of deck-side decor, like rope motifs and candles that resemble old lanterns.

Casa Craving Recap: Out of the Ballpark

In honor of America's pastime being in full swing, I devoted last week's Casa Craving challenge to outfitting an Out of the Ballpark bedroom - either for a young boy or an adult baseball enthusiast. Thanks to everyone who played along!

Look #1, designed by Lilv, who used old-timey trinkets for a young boy's room. I especially love the desk and the popcorn-inspired waste basket.

Look #2, designed by CocoChic, who showcased her subtle baseball theme against a palette of understated navy and red. The calender reminds me of an old-school scoreboard.

Designer Spotlight: Todd Oldham

Todd Oldham got his start stitching dresses together from pillowcases at age 15, and progressed to designing elaborate gowns for Hollywood stars like Julia Roberts and Susan Sarandon. He was, for 15-some-odd years, a fixture in fashion, even hosting a segment called "Todd Time" on MTV's House of Style in the '90s, which focused on America's growing fascination with fashion and the lives of supermodels. Oldham made his segue from the runway to the living room by creating a home and dorm room collection for Target in 2003, and also a line of furniture and accessories for the messiah of recliners, La-Z-Boy, both of which reflect his desire to make smart design accessible to a mass market.

Nowadays, you can see Oldham on Bravo TV as a host of Top Design, delivering challenges and inspiring the designers to be the most creative and original, and he was named the creative director of Old Navy last month. Oldham has also taken his pen to the page, sharing his passion for mid-century modern homes with over 52 do-it-yourself projects, as the author of Handmade Modern. He also designed The Hotel and The Fairfax Hotel in South Beach, Miami. As you can see, Oldham's career has developed to include all areas of design, from interior design, film, and photography, to furniture and graphic art. I can't imagine what's next!

Artist of the Day: Manny SIlva

A few years ago, when I volunteered as an editor for a small magazine, I had the pleasure of meeting Manny Silva. Manny is a really nice guy. He contributed artwork for one of the magazine's covers, and when I told him how much I admired his artwork, he then dropped off a print of that cover at a local coffee shop as a surprise gift. Pretty nice indeed.

Besides being a nice guy, Manny is also phenomenally talented. He's designed concert posters for bands like Belle and Sebastian, Sufjan Stevens, and The Flaming Lips. He graduated from California College of Arts & Crafts in 2003, and since then has worked for such companies as Fair Trade and Old Navy.
