Found It! Boldly Patterned Chair

Cruising through the portfolio of French photographer Pierre-Jean Verger, I stopped dead in my tracks at the sight of this living room. Stunning architectural details (mantel, moldings) such as these are a perk of many French homes and add instant elegance. But sometimes these features will make a room look more formal than it's meant to be. So, I was impressed with how this room looks simultaneously luxurious and casual. The large, clean-lined, contemporary sofa helps combat the chichi of pricey accessories and art, and the low coffee table, albeit a work of art, makes the room all the more relaxed.
Beyond that, I was drawn to the boldly patterned, chrome frame armchair in the corner, whose palette cues perfectly to that of the massive painting over the mantel. I'd actually come across it before. Where had I seen it? Find out when you read more.

Paulo Mendes da Rocha’s Paulistano Chair ($1,500) was designed in 1957, but just made its way to the US market from Brazil in 2006. Its frame is a continuous 17-ft. piece of solid stainless steel, shaped to withstand 200 lbs. of pressure. It's said to be "exceptionally comfortable" and flexes to suit upright or relaxed seated positions. Regardless, it's darn good looking. A variety of chair covers are offered, including leather, but the cotton Missoni cover is just plain irresistible. I don't know about you, but I'm aching to sink my seat into it.

I've been very impressed by the home offerings from luxe fashion label Missoni, and this Missoni Limited Edition Fragranced Candle ($150) is definitely a stylish indulgence. The sunrise-shaded design plays off of Missoni's classic textile designs, and the candle gives off a floral fragrance based on the label's perfume scent. I can't help but love it, and this would be a great gift for all of the fashion junkies I know.

Casa's Must Haves for August

It's a busy month for travelers, but ever since I was a kid, August has also been one of my favorite months to spend at home. There's just something about the days getting shorter that makes me want to lounge about and make the most of the remaining warm days. So for my must haves this month, I'm eyeing home finds that will let me enjoy a few more outdoor evenings and get excited to move back inside.

I've just discovered - and become smitten with - this Bola Floating Water Torch ($58). These would be a perfect way to add some extra light to a late Summer BBQ.
For a similar look indoors, I'm loving the Tom Dixon Copper Shade Pendant ($450) that just arrived at Design Within Reach.
I've got a stack of Summer reading I still need to get through, and this Pottery Barn Chesapeake Hammock ($89 to $99) will be the perfect place to finish it.
I wasn't kidding when I said I had a coral fixation, and the Alessio Emma Silvestris Mediterraneo Fruit Basket ($65) is particularly hard to resist.
Finally, I won't mind the cooling weather if I can crawl into the divine new Missoni Home Collection Irvin Bed Linen Set ($48 to $435), which includes everything from pillows to duvet covers.

New Design Predictions: On Track or Way Off?

Nicole Swengley of the London Financial Times recently wrote about her design predictions for the coming year. While some of these seem wacky to me (such as open-air bathrooms that encourage their use as public spaces), others seem on-track.

One of her predictions is that '60s and '70s colors, pop art sensibility, and sense of whimsy will play a big role in the upcoming designs this year. She writes:

Interiors are moving on from the Hollywood story of the past year. Glamour will remain the goal but there’ll be more than a hint of nostalgia from the 1960s and 1970s and a fresh injection of fun. Think black-and-white Op-Art with splashes of orange, bold upholstery prints (check out Kenzo’s new sofa and Missoni’s zappy designs), colourful glassware (such as John Rocha’s Red collection for Waterford Crystal), velvets in strong, medieval colours, glossy patent leathers, metallic wallpapers and chain-mail curtains.

Get the Look: Haight-Ashbury Hip

This year marks the 40th anniversary of San Francisco's legendary Summer of Love, giving Bay Area locals an excuse to indulge our lingering hippie tendencies - and that, of course, includes decorating.

Retro '60s-inspired furniture is everywhere these days - almost TOO everywhere - but I'm partial to the regal but rough-edged flower power of SF circa 1967. This fun and funky look, which I'm calling Haight-Ashbury Hip, is at once exotic and laid-back, recalling the lush, psychedelic artwork of rock posters (for inspiration, check out the highlights from the era in this coffee table book, The Art of Rock). The palette: Earth tones and warm sunset shades - including chocolate brown, crimson, red-orange, and green - accented with metallics.

The furniture: Avoid anything too severely mod and go for an understated, earth-toned couch with a bit of 1960s flair. For the rest of the seating, let guests spread out on the floor with items like this Velvet Floor Cushion ($100) and a Groovy Mushroom Chair ($175).

The accents: The hippies wouldn't have been able to afford a $2,179 rug, and frankly, neither can I. But this Missoni Maracaibo Rug would be a perfect centerpiece. For a more wallet-friendly focal point, try Medallion Burnout Panels in Maize ($34) on the windows or walls.

As accent pieces, use dishes and vases - I'm loving Jonathan Adler Furnace Bottles ($48 and $78) - in complimentary earth tones and exotic patterns. Group them on table tops, and don't be afraid to mix and match.

The lighting: To deliver the soft orange light your hippie den requires, shun overhead light and try a playful pendant lamp (or two or three).
