Weird Furniture: Louis Vuitton Electric Chair

Artist Peter Gronquist opened a solo show,"The Revolution Will Be Fabulous," at LA's Gallery 1988 this weekend featuring his designer knock-off weaponry. NotCot was there and got a peek of his Louis Vuitton electric chair ($4,500), a "traditional" wooden electric chair printed with company's monogram and made with LV buckles used for wrist and ankle straps. The general consensus seemed to be that the quality of the chair, as well as other pieces like PacMan hand grenades and a peacock-feathered Gucci gun, didn't meet the standards of the brands they tried to emulate. While I will admit that building an LV electric chair certainly qualifies as thinking out of the box, I don't think knocking off big-name designers (who tend to prostitute their own logos to begin with) is much of a "revolutionary" statement. One of NotCot's commenters wrote, "To think that mass consumer culture can co-opt revolutionary ideals as some sort of a buzzword or the latest fad, is insulting and vulgar. If this is what the revolution looks like, then it is a sad day for the youth of today." Do you agree? Or do you think Gronquist is challenging the consumer-obsessed mentality in a valuable way?

I recently ran across these gorgeous paper flowers from stylist Zoe Bradley. Zoe's paper creations have been seen everywhere, from the McQueen runway to the windows of Louis Vuitton and Donna Karan. While many of us will always prefer fresh flowers to paper ones, carefully crafted and displayed paper blooms, such as Zoe's, can make a huge visual impact. Imagine displaying them at a birthday party, baby shower, or even an outdoor wedding. I can see them hanging from trees, clustered in modern vases, or even tucked in party goers' chignons. Casa Shops: Cerealart

I'd love to be an art collector, but sometimes the pennies just don't add up. That's why I'm a huge fan of Cerealart, which has made the work of critically-acclaimed, internationally-recognized, contemporary artists more accessible to a penny-pinching audience. Cerealart is a sort of artist collective, which develops, produces, and distributes three-dimensional artwork in multiples.

Most of the designs are limited editions, and distributed through Cerealart, and through museums and galleries around the world. The thought behind it is that reasonably priced, three-dimensional artwork is a great vehicle for distributing ideas. Some of the noted idea-makers include Marcel Dzama, Takashi Murakami (of Louis Vuitton fame), Allan McCollum, Yayoi Kusama, and Laurie Simmons.
