Coveted Crib: James May's Lego House

Trix may be for kids, but Legos are for building. British TV presenter and journalist James May and a group of volunteers have been building a house from over three million Legos at Denbies Wine Estate in the town of Dorking, in Surrey. Construction had reached the upper floor of the house last week. When completed, hopefully next week, the house will include a staircase, toilet, and shower, and more importantly, breathtaking views across the vineyard.

My childhood bedroom was often mistaken for Legoland, so as you might expect, I'm completely coveting this crib. I love the modern stripes, and the contrast of the colors with the green vineyard. At the very least, it would have been fun to help build this house! Would you want to live in a Lego house? I think a smaller version would make a great playhouse for kids. Cool Idea: Lego Frame

As part of his university project to give a household brand a new marketing direction, Michael Ciancio chose to rebrand Lego, targeting hip, young adults instead of children. He created a catalog featuring instructions on how to customize Lego blocks to make useful products like iPod cases, picture frames, and coffee mugs. I'm keen on his Lego frame. It looks like a cinch to make with some glue, a basic cardboard or wood frame, and of course, Legos. I think I'm going to raid my mother's attic next time I head home; I know she's got all my old toys stashed away as keepsakes. This isn't the first time I've seen Legos reenvisioned, though: remember my post on Kitchen Legos? Oh, what a little imagination can build . . .

In these tough economic times, we all have to do a little penny-pinching. For some, that means cooking at home instead of dining out, steering clear of the shopping mall, doing DIY projects on the weekends, or even making your own firestarters. But even DIY projects cost money sometimes. So, how do you make something from nothing? You look in your kid's toy box, of course. Instead of shopping for accents, Evil Mad Scientist made some kitchen accents like bowls, napkin holders, vases, and utensil holders out of Legos! Resourceful, huh? As grown-up kid, who loves Legos, Playmobil, and Barbies as much as she did when she was 6, I can't get enough of this project.

Nice and New: Building Brick Candles

I must admit: I've always been a big LEGO fan. I used to spend hours building entire LEGO villages, complete with nail salons and clothing boutiques (for the little policemen figures, of course). So I couldn't help but smile at this Building Brick Candle ($48). When I read that it's made of eco-friendly soy, I was really grinning. I also appreciate that it's unscented, since I'm pretty partial to the scent of my Diptyque candles. The nostalgic candle comes in blue, red, and yellow: all three iconic colors.
