Gift Guide: Hip Wall Décor for Kids

Growing up I was always interested in decorating, but I had a fleeting sense of style that changed as frequently as my taste in food. My parents let me choose my décor, which I loved. But in retrospect, I wish they would have given me more guidance; I often regretted my decorating choices when I came across something better. In light of all of this, I thought I'd round up some of what I consider hip wall décor for kids. From decals to shelves to wallpaper, I've selected some playful pieces that are also stylish and bound to please any kid you know.

Wall Murals for Kids

Artist Devon Holzwarth created Mural Studio in 2003 with the intention of applying her fine art training and imagination towards creating murals that can transform a space. I especially love Devon's kids' murals, and would've been thrilled to have one of her underwater murals decorating my bedroom as a kid.

Devon studied at the Rhode Island School of Design, and after graduation moved to San Jose, CA. After painting a huge mural for the preschool room at her church, she decided to create a mural and fine art business. In addition to Mural Studio, Devon also launched Devon Industry, an online shop and gallery where you can buy Devon's paintings and an assortment of hand-made products including felted scarves, flowers, and painted floorcloths.

Cool Idea: Trampoline Tent

My brother and sister and I did a fair amount of backyard camping when we were kids, but if we'd had one of these trampoline tents, it would've been impossible for our parents to get us in the house.

This tent fixture ($250, plus delivery from the UK) clips onto the edge of a circular trampoline, converting it into a tent or backyard playhouse for kids. It features four windows and two zip-up doors, and comes with a waterproof fly sheet. Do you know any kids who'd dig this?

Adorable Little Animals

I think I'm going to have to step up my knitting skill set beyond the basic knit one purl two, because Farmer Fox is making me crazy covetous. Parents with a knack for knitting would be well-served to grab one of these patterns, which I found first at Craft:, and are available from Ariadne Knits and the fabulous brain of Montreal designer Jennie Eveleigh Lamond for $4.50 as a PDF download. So. Cute.

Open House: What Was Your Most Dangerous DIY?

When I was a kid, my sister found a big roll of pink stuff in our basement that looked like cotton candy and unknowingly ran her hand across it. She instantly became red and itchy: she'd come in contact with fiberglass insulation which my parents had been using in a remodel. The man-made mineral fiber can cause a range of health problems, including immediate skin irritation and respiratory troubles resulting from inhalation, if not worse. There are plenty of dangers of DIY, especially if you're using sharp objects, like saws or knives, or even fire. Last week you told me what your biggest DIY was, so now I want to know: what was your most dangerous DIY?

Casa Quickie: Shop the Kids' Section

Chain stores and catalogs are a great place to scout out affordable homewares, but like shopping for clothes at Gap and H&M, you can run into the problem of having the same cool stuff as everyone else. So take a page from petite women who buy kids' clothes and shop the kiddie offerings at your favorite home stores.

Retailers such as Pottery Barn's PBTeen and Ikea carry some surprisingly hip items that, taken out of context, don't look childish. I like to look for lighting rugs and accessories like this the Pottery Barn Kids Primary Countertop Accessories ($9-39) from the Dr. Seuss collection.

It may not be as cheap as getting your clothes in the kids' section, but at least it's unexpected.

Steal of the Day: Pottery Barn Kids Rattan Chandelier

I can't help but see the similarities between the Pottery Barn Kids Rattan Chandelier ($69.99) and the Moooi Random Light ($610), and notably, the vast difference between their prices. The PB version looks a little less polished, but also has a more natural vibe, made of rattan twisted around an iron frame. I think it's a really versatile piece that needn't be reserved for kids, and could work in a variety of settings. I'd love to see a pair framing a bed, or even a single chandelier hanging above a reading nook. What do you think?

Steal of the Day: Pottery Barn Kids Modern Plaid Rug

I don't know why I've never checked out Pottery Barn Kids before, considering that I look at PBteen fairly regularly. But I'm not surprised to find adult-worthy designs, like this Pottery Barn Kids Modern Plaid Rug ($89-$399). I'm envisioning it in the traditional living room of a Colonial, with a crave worthy blue velvet chair and some modern Delftware. It would also fit seamlessly into this ravishing red kitchen below the farmhouse table and red Eames Eiffel chairs. Of course, I know at least one of you will say it would be cute for a little boys room . . . but how about in a child-free space? Can you see it now?

Steal of the Day: Pottery Barn Kids Thanksgiving Leaf Garland

I think garlands are totally underrated. They only seem to make an appearance on Christmas fireplace mantels or at the birthday parties of five-year-old girls. It's totally discrimination. I think we should welcome cute garlands like the Pottery Barn Kids Thanksgiving Leaf Garland ($39.99, reduced from $59) into our homes whenever possible. The festive garland is made of felt leaves on a grosgrain ribbon. So much easier and safer than pricking your fingers sewing hundreds of pieces of stale popcorn together for hours on end, don't you think?
