Wallpaper Magazine's 2009 Design Awards Winners

Wallpaper magazine, which focuses a discerning and design-savvy eye on topics such as travel, design, entertainment, fashion, and media, has just released its Design Awards 2009 issue, which goes on sale today. The 2009 Design Awards, which include recognition for everything from best grooming product to best women's fashion collection, also showcases a number of home and interior design items as well. The judges, which included Kanye West, had their work cut out for them, but I have to say they came up with some great choices. Crave Worthy: Livingstones

I've just been enlightened by Kanye West about a hip bean-bag alternative, Livingstones (inquire for price). Livingstones, designed in 2004 by French lady Stéphanie Marin, are essentially floor cushions shaped like stones, although some equate more to sofas than cushions. They're made of environmentally-friendly, pure, and natural materials like 100-percent Virgin wool and hypoallergenic polysilicone fiber stuffing, and the wool's mineral tints don't use any chemical dyes. The stones come in a palette of eight shades, mostly neutral aside from a vibrant red, which will accommodate every color scheme. They're also available in a polar-fleece alternative, in three shades, for those who are allergic to wool. Clearly, these cushions are meant for a modern home. But if you can make them work in yours, they're fun for kids and cozy for all. Is it just me or does it seem like the French have a thing for stones?

Kanye West To Sell His Beverly Hills Home

In the market for a celebrity-owned crib? Hip-hop star Kanye West is selling his Beverly Hills home, and it can be yours for the measly price of $8,699,000. According to Big Time, the house, which he purchased in February for $7,150,000, is "back on the market after eight months of ownership and no months of inhabiting the property." I'm not sure whether this 631 N. Crescent Drive address is the same sleek West Coast crib that I gave you a sneak peek into in September. But, it would be sad to think of that hip pop art pad disturbed in any way. I'm sure Kanye will bring his interior design talent wherever he goes though, that and his prolific blogging skills...

Kanye West didn't take home any prizes at the 2007 Video Music Awards on Sunday - and he's none to happy about it either. But when it comes to interior design, the rapper totally rules. Check out this feature on his Los Angeles home from Interior Design magazine (via Stereogum) and you'll see what I mean.

According to the article, West studied fine art at the American Academy of Art in Chicago, and he's since amassed a very impressive collection of pop art and contemporary paintings, like this Takashi Murakami in the living room (above). From the looks of it, he's also quite fond of mid-century modern design, and I love the way his decor alternates between stark, subdued palettes and eye-popping color. Desire/Acquire: Pillar Umbrella Stand

This Aaron Thomas Hand Screen Printed Pillar Umbrella Stand ($389) was designed specifically for design fiend and international hotshot Kanye West. But, after Thomas carefully hand-illustrated the Roman-style pillar, burnt screens, and laid out the design, West ended up not purchasing them! It's made of acrylic and measures 10x 24 inches. If I had the dough, I'd snatch one up in a second. But, I doubt there are many folks out there who'd spend so much on, essentially, a waste basket. For those who dig the trompe-l'œil effect of this stand, and the monochrome palette, I've found a much more affordable alternative. To see it, read more.

The Umbra Loft Vazo Vase ($16.99) may not have a pillar design, but it is a very similar one. At 5.8-x-5.8-x-12.8 inches, it's about half the size of the pillar stand, so it'll certainly hold a smaller, purse-size umbrella. Or, you can use it as a vase! What do you think?
