Jonathan Adler's Tips For Stealing Auntie Mame's Style

If you haven't noticed, I'm often inspired by set design. So it comes as no surprise that designers and other interiors enthusiasts would feel the same way. Jonathan Adler recently let the Wall Street Journal in on a little secret: one of his favorite rooms isn't a room at all, but the film set of 1958 film Auntie Mame, starring Rosalind Russell. Watching the swanky midcentury movie, he tells reporter Jen Renzi, is "a right of passage for every aspiring decorator."

As Elle Decor describes her in another article, "Mame Dennis redecorates as often as she changes her dress (or colors her hair, for that matter). She’s a fearless designer and her apartment wafts from Danish Modern to Far Eastern in the film’s time." That sense of adventure in design is what Adler gravitates toward: "When designing for clients," he says, "I like to channel their inner Auntie Mame, to make them appear just a little more glamorous and eccentric than they are."

Hiring Adler on as your interior designer is the surest route to an eccentric and glamorous home, but if that's not in the cards, he's offered five tips to get the look of the film:

Have multiple seating zones.
Never sacrifice comfort for style.
Embrace folly.
Separate with screens.
Long and low is always chic.
