DIY: Ikat Stenciled Drapes

I like to change the drapes in my family room with the seasons. I like something a bit heavier for the Fall and Winter, and then when Spring rolls around I like something a little lighter and brighter. I didn't want to spend a lot of money, but I was definitely itching for a change.

I decided to make my own drapes using paint drop cloths and a stencil that I already had. The drop cloths were $9.99 each at Lowes. I used stitch witchery to hem the sides, and then used an ikat stencil to create my own drapes.

I also used a little stitch witchery to attach a ribbon to the edge to give them a nice finished look.

I recently stenciled one wall in our dining room with an ikat pattern stencil I found on Etsy. I made a few other changes to the room like painting the ceiling, adding trim to the drapes, and creating a new vignette over the buffet. The stencil wall made the biggest impact, though. It's amazing how one stenciled wall changed the entire look of the room!

Inspired: Patterns and Baubles at Doha Tribeca Film Festival

Last night, Sherine Morad Ahmed from Bibliotheca Alexandrina mixed up patterns and baubles at the Opening Night Gala during the 2010 Doha Tribeca Film Festival. Inspired by her bold use of pattern and shape, I decided to put together a sitting area that echoed the spirit of her outfit. This is definitely a bold look, and one that takes a certain tolerance for pattern (which I apparently have in spades). Two of my favorites from this look are the Sofa With Bridal Rug ($1,600) from Wisteria and the Modo Three-Sided Chandelier ($4,000) from Design Within Reach. Assisted Living: Ikat Fabric

Who Wore It Better? Pink and White Gucci Ikat Dress

What a fantastic dress. I loved this pink and white Gucci Ikat dress when January Jones wore it to a pre-Golden Globe Awards party in January. It's girlie, yet modern. Taraji P. Henson chose the same frock for an evening at Cipriani with Mary J. Blige and friends last night. Both ladies opted for black shoes, but January's are satin pumps and Taraji's are architectural sandals. JJ grabbed a small black purse (you can sort of see it on the table next to her), and Taraji a pearl white clutch. Lastly, Taraji wore David Yurman drop earrings and fun teal nail polish. Who wins - less or more?!

Cool Idea: Re-Imagining Cardboard Boxes

Su Casa member Bromeliad could've simply recycled this cardboard box, but she saw hidden potential in its boring exterior. She explains, "This is a simple and inexpensive project I made using a cardboard box, doublesided tape and highlighter markers."

Bromeliad printed out an image of ikat that fit the size of her box, traced the shape, and colored it in. Using doublesided tape, she wrapped the cardboard box with the "ikat."
