Walnut Desks With Mid-Century Pop Perfect For Season 5 of Mad Men

With the long awaited return of Mad Men on the horizon, I'm eagerly anticipating oodles of '60s-era modern furniture and decor delights every week. In particular, I'm curious about the look of the offices in season five, and in particular the desks. I've rounded up two gorgeous walnut desks that introduce color into the design that would be absolutely welcome in the set design for this season of Mad Men.

The first desk I'm in serious love with is the Swag Leg Desk by Herman Miller ($2,000). Available through Room & Board, this desk was designed by George Nelson in 1958 for Herman Miller. Built out of solid walnut and chrome, its small size allows you to tuck it into a corner of your bedroom or use it in a studio space. The big pops of color on the desk's lacquer shelf area, however, will always ensure that it makes a statement.

Nice and New: Limited-Edition Walnut Eames Hang-It-All

Fifty-seven years after Charles and Ray Eames designed their iconic multicolor Hang-It-All, it's still a crowd favorite. But as useful as the design is for hanging coats, hats, scarves, and more, those cheeky, candy-colored balls are too lighthearted for some tastes. So I'm ecstatic to see that Herman Miller, the original manufacturer of the design, has debuted a limited-edition version of the Hang-It-All ($250) reimagined with a black steel frame and solid walnut balls. Quite dapper and more reserved, it's a gorgeous new interpretation . . . and considering how trendy walnut is these days, I'm sure it will do well. That's not to say you can't have both; this wonderful walnut creation would look delightful alongside its older, livelier sibling. If you're interested, work fast: it will only be in production until early next year.

About six months ago, Su Casa community member anti curl's husband became obsessed with the George Nelson Platform Bench by Herman Miller. Seeing as an original would have cost him about $700, he decided to build one. "So what's a fellow with no discernible woodworking skills and no tools to do?" he asked. "Turn to Legos of course." Over 1,400 Legos and a few redesigns later, he's built a one-of-a-kind coffee table that's as much an art piece as it is a conversation piece. Come take a look and hear more about the project! The Herman Miller Embody Chair Feels Good All Over

When furniture designer Herman Miller sent me one of their latest and greatest creations, the Embody Chair - which is both body and blogging friendly - I couldn't wait to see if it felt as good as it looked.

With the help of physicians and professionals in such fields like biomechanics, vision, physical therapy, and ergonomics, designers Jeff Weber and Bill Stumpf created the Embody Chair with the office worker in mind, therefore making sure it was jam-packed full of health-positive benefits.

What instantly struck me about this chair was the fact that its entire backing looks like a real spine, with vertebrates and all. Once you sit down, you can actually feel it adapting to the shape and movement of your spine and it will move when you move. With adjustments for your back, seat height, arm height, arm width, the tilt tension (yes it can recline) and the seat depth, you can get the Embody to distribute your weight evenly and conform perfectly to your body. And even if your body moves, the lower back support always remains constant for perfect posture and back alignment.

Although the chair looks very dainty and delicate, it's actually quite sturdy and extremely heavy! So you don't have to worry about breaking it. The Embody is 95 percent recyclable, PVC free, and was made with 42 percent of recycled content. The chair is said to be available this January for $1600 - I know, pricey, but it is the Aston Martin of office chairs! And I can't confirm this, but I'm going to assume it will come in more colors other than yellow. Herman Miller even has its own Thoughtpile site where you can contribute solutions and creative ideas from topics ranging to the environment to urban design!

Announcing the 2011 Primetime Emmy Awards Nominees!

TV stars Joshua Jackson and Melissa McCarthy were up and at 'em this morning to present the nominees for this year's Primetime Emmy Awards - one of which went to McCarthy herself for her work on Mike and Molly. There aren't too many shockers on this year's list; new shows Game of Thrones, The Killing, and Boardwalk Empire all got some love, Modern Family continues to dominate (now with a nomination for Ed O'Neill), and Friday Night Lights finally got that much-deserved nod for outstanding drama series.
