Gilding, which is defined as covering something thinly with gold leaf or gold paint, can add a glamorous touch to common objects. While the luxurious look of a gilt item may be specious, it's all the while beautiful, and I can't help but want one for myself. Cool Idea: Gilt-y as Charged

Check out the luxe look of the interior of this credenza and the table lamp atop it, thanks to their gilded interiors. I love the idea of a secret, gold lining to a furniture or accent in your home. It lends an unexpected, glam touch. The Ikea Trollsta Sideboard ($349) seems like an obvious choice for a gilded interior; don't you think? Get the Look: Casual, Glamorous Living Room

Growing up, I used the word "den" to describe my family's hangout room with a TV and a fireplace, and "living room" to describe our parlor-like room, which was used rarely, and when it was, for cocktail parties. It always seemed insensible to me to have a room you never use, and I vouched to make the most of my space when I had the option. This owner of this North London living room seems to really get it. With its George Sherlock-style sofas and leather wingback chair, the seating looks supremely comfortable - ideal as an everyday hangout. But, the space is polished and fit for entertaining thanks to glamorous accessories like a gilded, Federal-style mirror, a demur double sconce, a tailored, mercury glass floor lamp, and a turned wood console table used as a bar with elegant glass decanters. Love It or Hate It? Bold Stair Runner

I just watched the 1966 Audrey Hepburn and Peter O'Toole film How to Steal a Million, which is chock-full of talking points when it comes to interior design. But the one thing that truly blew me away (aside from the armoire that leads to a secret staircase) was the purple staircase and banister in Hepburn's character's foyer. In contrast to the rest of the reserved, gilded, French furnishings in the Parisian mansion, the purple stair runner is a very bold choice. Several important scenes take place on the staircase, so it was smart of production designer Alexandre Trauner to make it a focal point. Clearly, the décor in this home is dated and a little glitzy for most of our tastes, and this shade of purple isn't very popular these days. But what do you think of this effect in general? Do you like how they've used a stair runner to create visual impact? Would you want to replicate a similar look in your home with a powerful color, pattern, or stripes?

Get the Look: Selina Lake Style

Interior stylist and author of Bazaar Style Selina Lake has done it again, spellbinding me with fresh photos in her portfolio. Her talent at styling everything from a mantel vignette to a tented outdoor sitting area is insurmountable, but I will take a shot at recreating one of the stunning rooms in her portfolio. I was taken by this rich living room with its chalky eggplant and gold palette and I thought you might be too, so here we go. To see my thoughts on recreating this space, read more.

Beyond its architectural details, the elegance of this room relies heavily on accessories and curves. Without the cohesive palette of its pillows, throws, candlelight, and ornate mirror, this room would be quite lackluster. Beyond that, the furniture doesn't necessarily make a bold statement, but the curves of each piece tie it all together and parallel the femininity provided by lush textiles and ornate details.

But first, begin by painting your walls a chalky gray like Benjamin Moore Cloudy Sky (2122-30).

On to furniture. A Chesterfield sofa like the one shown here with nice, rounded arms isn't hard to find. Use a nightstand with feminine curves as a side table. If you can't find a gilded one, lay on a couple coats of gold paint. Choose a dark wood coffee table with a nice silhouette. Your armchair should have comfortable curves, and a soft fabric like velvet.

And finally, accessories. Royal shades of eggplant and gold rule this room. Go with rich velvet pillows and plush throws, a splash of gold sequins, and a dose of gilded hand-carving in your candlesticks and mirror.

Christian Lacroix Says Adieu to His Painfully Chic Paris Pad

I have died and gone to real estate heaven. Haute couturier Christian Lacroix has put his 2,150-square-foot apartment in the tragically hip and fashion-centric Marais district of Paris on the market for nearly $2.6 million. I couldn't help but snoop around for photos, and I almost wish I hadn't: the pad has the unrivaled style of a Carrie Bradshaw ensemble and is plush with original Parisian details such as gilded moldings and French doors opening onto petite balconies. It's also steps from the Picasso Museum and Place des Vosges, the oldest square in Paris. Apparently Monsieur Lacroix has already moved to another apartment in the 'hood; why he'd want to, I don't know. But, I'm sure Lacroix will carry his theatrical style - and fabulous furnishings - wherever he goes. Check out photos of la maison when you read more.

One Zebra Rug, Two Ways

The zebra trend is pretty played out at this point, especially when you're talking about genuine animal-hide rugs. But, now there are plenty of zebra print rugs that are actually hooked, and don't endanger any poor zebras. I love the Liora Manne Ravella Rug ($119-$1,349), which has a sort of charcoal-color zebra print. I thought I'd see if I could create two different looks with the rug, beginning with the most obvious, Hollywood Regency. I went for a some tufted velvet, lots of gilding, some graphic shapes, and nailhead trim to add glamour to the wild thing.

For a rustic look, I went with plaids and leather textiles, a faux wooden moose head, and a tree-trunk lamp. But, I added a dose of modernity with a slick red side table and a silk throw pillow. Which look do you prefer?

I've had 18th century design on my mind lately . . . I'm really feeling damask fabrics, carving wood, and gilding as of late. I guess I'd like a little Marie Antoinette-esque design in my life; but not too much, I'm a modern gal! The Neiman Marcus Carved Loveseat ($2,999) has all of those elements that I adore, that make me feel like I'm strolling the pavilions of Versailles. But I think it could be easily integrated into my modern home, perhaps beside a slick white side table or some mirrored furniture. Even if it doesn't make its way into my digs (long shot), I'll still "Ooooh" and "Ahhh" over it. Will you?
