As much as I love making my own wrapping paper, I can't resist manufactured wrapping paper with a beautiful design. Such is the case with the Snow & Graham Winter Tweets Paper ($7 for two sheets). Featuring small, vibrant red birds perched on brown and green branches, the paper is festive and seasonal. But its clean lines and unfussy shapes give it a hip, mid-century modern vibe - an infinitely better choice than kitschy Santa Claus and reindeer designs. Of course, your Walgreens-variety wrapping paper will come at much more manageable price, but the look of these sweet birds under your tree is oh-so-worth it, and hard to resist. Casa Quickie: Use Film Strip For Ribbons

Nice and New: Amy Butler Eco Giftwrap and Tableware

Sometimes, when you're hosting a large party, there's little choice but to go with paper. Luckily, Amy Butler has been working with the Gift Wrap Company to come up with an ecological alternative to gift-giving and paper partyware. She has just released a new line called "Giftwrap Green," including gift wrap, bags, and gift-card boxes made from 100 percent postconsumer recycled materials, printed with her beautiful designs. In addition to the gift wrap and bags, she has also developed an ecologically-friendly line of paper tableware, "Eco Tableware," including coordinating plates, napkins, and towels. The plates and napkins are printed with 100 percent soy ink and the plates use a water-soluble coating so that they can be rinsed and recycled, too. So, whether you're going to a party (gift giving) or throwing one, you can be green and chic in Amy Butler style.

Recyclable paper is not a new phenomenon. But plant-able paper? That's another thing. I'm always tempted by those single sheets of wrapping paper you often find in fancy paper stores, but I don't really wrap enough gifts to justify buying all the paper I crave. That's why I love this project I spotted on Design Sponge: Blogger Grace livened up her closet door by filling the panels with some leftover gift wrap. This would be a fun way to get rid of scraps - or a great excuse to buy some of those papers I've been eyeing.

Furoshiki is a type of Japanese wrapping cloth that was traditionally used to transport clothes, gifts, and food. The name means "bath spread," and can be traced to the Edo period, when cloths were used to to bundle clothes while at the sentō (public bath). Furoshiki is a great way to add decorative flair to a gift this holiday season. So if you're taking my Casa Quickie advice and wrapping any presents with fabric, try one of these furoshiki-wrapping techniques and impress your friends with your gift-wrapping skills!

Casa Quickie: Instant Faux Bois Wrap

I love this idea for wrapping holiday presents, which I found on Craft. Just use faux bois contact paper over some plain brown wrapping paper. Finish it off with some leaf cutouts, and you have a well-presented gift worthy of any of your faux bois-loving design-maven friends.

Like decorating your first apartment, decorating your baby's nursery is a really exciting task. But many new moms tend to forget that their $59 polyester pony mobile will end up in the attic within a few months. So if you're shopping for a holiday gift for an infant or a nursery-decorating friend, I recommend wrapping up a mobile that can act as décor long after a baby moves out of the crib.

One of my favorites is this CB2 Abstract Mobile ($19.95), which is very clearly inspired by the work of acclaimed American sculptor Alexander Calder, who invented the mobile in 1931. I have a few more modern mobiles up my sleeve, so read more.
