Open House: Flags as Drapery

According to Title 4, Chapter 1, Section 8, (d) of the US Flag Code, the American flag, "should never be used as wearing apparel, bedding, or drapery. It should never be festooned, drawn back, nor up, in folds, but always allowed to fall free." But Austin's Hotel St. Cecilia has used Old Glory as drapery on hospital tracking here in a bedroom suite, and I applaud the look. To me, a flag displayed nearly anywhere (so long it's in one piece) looks patriotic. But some of you - and the authors of the code - may disagree. Then again, there are plenty of tiny US codes and laws that I don't follow (oops), so should this one matter? Tell me your thoughts below. Do you approve of this use of the flag as drapery? Have you done something similar in your own home? Or are you against it?

How-To: Installing a Flag Pole

It may no longer be Independence Day, but flags add Summer style to your home year-round. So if you haven't already, consider hanging a flag on the exterior of your home to cheer up the neighborhood — be it an American flag, a state flag, or the flag of your favorite sports team! Position the bracket on an exterior wall of your home.
Mark the holes for the screws with a pencil.
Drill the holes that you marked. If your home is brick, drill with a masonry bit into the brick.
Screw the bracket into the wall, making sure you get the bracket on straight. Otherwise, the flag will not hang straight. Most brackets will require three screws.
Insert the flag into the pole, and unroll it.
Voilà! Instant curb appeal.

Do You Fly a Flag at Your Home?

For some, flying a flag in front of your home is an explicit display of your national patriotism, and for others, it's simply decorative or just a social gesture. In any case, whether you fly your country's flag, a nautical one, or that of your favorite sports team, they do add a certain je ne sais quoi to your home's curb appeal. Do you fly one?

Cool Idea: Using Flags as Drapes

Sometimes I wonder if there's anything Danny Seo does that doesn't involve a stroke of genius. He's so unbelievably creative; he never ceases to impress me. Here, in his guest bedroom, he's used durable, machine-washable nylon flags as drapes, which he hung with café curtain rings, which have clips. I love how the light pours in through the patterns and letters on the flags. Some of you might think it's a bit unpatriotic to hang national flags in this manner, but I think nautical flags are perfectly acceptable. I think it infuses a little personality or eccentricity into a traditional, masculine style.

Flag Flying on Memorial Day?

Memorial Day, which was originally called Decoration Day, was first used to honor Union soldiers who died in the United States Civil War. After World War I, it was expanded to commemorate all US men and women who died in military service.

Growing up, I always marched in my small town's Memorial Day parade, flute in hand. Before we left for the parade, we always put up an American flag in front of our home. My grandparents, all of whom had either served or assisted in the war effort during WWII, always did the same.

Do you fly a flag in front of your home at Memorial Day? How else do you remember those who have served the US on this holiday?

Trend Alert: Union Jacks

The Union Jack flag is the official flag of the United Kingdom, and it's also an officially hot decorating must have. Here's a little history, since most of us Yanks don't know the background on the flag. By the early 1700s the flag was called "The Union," and since it was flown from a jackstaff on Navy ships, popular legend has it that the flag got its full name, the Union Jack, from the jackstaff. When Northern Ireland became part of the United Kingdom in 1801, the St. Patrick's flag, a red diagonal cross on a white background, was added to the Union Jack, giving us the flag we have today. Love It or Hate It? Jonathan Adler Zebra British Flag Rug

This cruelty-free Zebra British Flag Rug ($875) is new at Jonathan Adler, and kind of cracking me up. I've always loved the Union Jack, and even though I'm a Yankee, I think its geometric design would make a wonderful addition to my home. I'm also pretty much over the zebra rug trend, so I think this is a playful alternative. Do you dig it?
