We've all got bathroom essentials to store that may not necessarily be for all eyes to see (you know what I mean), and of course we've got to have a healthy supply of first aid supplies. Primer: Making an Emergency Preparedness Kit

Hurricane season is in full force, and here in California, there's always the chance of an earthquake. Even if you don't live in storm or quake country - but especially if you do - you should have an emergency preparedness kit stashed away.

The American Red Cross recommends having enough food and water on hand to support every member of your household for at least three days. They've also got a great list of other must-haves you may not have thought of, including bleach and a non-electric can opener. Tune in tomorrow, when I'll feature some ready-made kits you can buy. Until now, here's a checklist of everything you should have on hand.

Water. The Red Cross recommends one gallon per day per person, including pets. If you don't have any stored, why not make a habit of picking up a gallon or two every time you go to the supermarket?
Food. Concentrate on ready-to-eat canned fruits, veggies, juice, and meat, as well as protein-rich snacks like trail mix and granola bars. Don't forget vitamins and special supplies for any elderly family members, babies, and pets.
A first-aid kit with Band-Aids, latex gloves, gauze pads, a thermometer, over-the-counter drugs, and necessary prescription medications.

Moist towelettes and antibacterial hand gel
Sunscreen
Paper cups, plates, and plastic utensils

How-To: Keep Your Household Safe and Sane on the Fourth

While the Fourth of July can offer a lot of fun with friends and family, there are also some obvious hazards, from barbecue burns to out-of-control sparklers. There are many ways to keep your house, and your loved ones, safe on the Fourth, with a little common sense and prep work. Here are my suggestions:

Keep a fire extinguisher close by. If you're using a barbecue or a fire pit, chances are good that you may need to use it.
Make sure you have a Summer first aid kit on hand, especially if you're outside or in the sun.

If you or your kids are using sparklers or firecrackers, a burn kit is a must have!
Is your dog afraid of fireworks? Check out PetSugar's advice for mellowing your pooch out.
If you're hosting party guests, stock your bathroom with extra toilet paper, soap, sunscreen, and hand towels.
Stop stains before they can set in on your favorite picnic tablecloth or blanket. Find out how to treat red wine and grease stains, and avoid sullying your linens!

Casa Craving Recap: Dorm Room Digs

Even if you haven't lived in a dorm in ages, it's fun to think about decorating them. So before back-to-school time, I asked you guys to help our dorm dwellers dress their new digs for last week's Casa Craving challenge. Thanks to everyone who played along!

Some of you had some excellent, practical advice for college students: Lintacious recommends "one good desk lamp that you can have on while your roommate sleeps." Other Casa Cravers chose products that were way more luxurious than any dorm I've ever seen, but I loved those too.
