This Just In: Eat the View Wins Over On Day One

You may remember back in August, I told you about a campaign and petition to plant healthy, edible landscapes in high-impact, high-visibility places, including the White House - much like San Francisco's Slow Food Nation Victory Garden - called Eat the View. Well, as it turns out, after the polling the public on their preference of 81 ideas for our future pres., Eat the View was named the winner by On Day One, a platform for gathering ideas about what Obama should do on his first day in office. This isn't to say that Obama will be taking any orders from On Day One, but the people have spoken, and it's clear that many would like to see some veggies growing at 1600 Pennsylvania. This Just In: Eat the View Petitions For White House Edible Garden

Edible estates are a growing trend at homes around the country as food costs rise, along with food-safety concerns and environmental awareness, but there are some who think we shouldn't be confined to our own lawns. Eat the View is a nonprofit campaign to plant healthy, edible landscapes in high-impact, high-visibility places, and is petitioning for a vegetable garden on the lawn of most visible home in the country, the White House. I myself recently volunteered at one of these high-visibility gardens, San Francisco's Slow Food Nation Victory Garden, which sits in front of City Hall. The premise behind Eat the View's campaign is that as "America's House," the White House should set a positive example for the country and the world. The fresh, healthy, and environmentally-friendly produce grown in the garden would go to the White House kitchen as well as local food pantries. There is currently already a staff of 13 gardeners and groundskeepers, who maintain everything from the Rose Garden to the presidential putting green. And, it would not be the first time the White House had a green thumb: in the 1940s, First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt grew a victory garden of her own. To see a video about the subject, read more.

Nice and New: Seating For Eating by StudioIlse

Interior designer Ilse Crawford has done it again, this time making her exquisite design skills available to the hungry public. Her design group Studio Ilse will launch this elegant new range of wooden seating, benches, and stools, called Seating for Eating, at next month's London Design Festival (Sept. 19-27).

The designs have a familiar, Shaker-style look, and are not a far departure from some of Studio Ilse's other pieces like these high-back chairs. Each piece is handcrafted by De La Espada from solid chesnut with specially chosen knots, and has copper feet. They're also available in this natural oiled and sustainable wood, or painted eggshell white. I love how the high-back benches are both open and intimate; they offer privacy (great for open plan rooms) but are also not totally closed off from the room. The range is also great because it allows for group seating, but also individual seating. I am disappointed to see a single high-back dining chair missing from the collection, as well as the dining table itself. If I had 15,000 smackers to spare, I'd lease this place in an instant just for kicks. This Just In: Olsen Twins to Sell Their NYC Penthouse

According to the New York Observer, Mary Kate and Ashley Olsen have put their 5 bedroom, 4.5 bath home in the West Village, NYC, on the market for $11,995,000. The twins have apparently been renting it out for $35,000 a month for a few years, but did help create it. They "bought four properties from the developer preconstruction and designed their own floor plan in collaboration with the developer."

The Corcoran Group calls the listing "one of the largest penthouses in the West Village to ever become available," and a "12 room trophy, commanding some of the most spectacular water and city views in all of Manhattan through 53 large picture windows."

Some of the notable amenities include a private elevator, a glass-enclosed wood-burning fireplace, and a 22' x 18' eat-in kitchen with an oversized granite island and Viking Professional 6 burner stove. Oh, and naturally, an oversized walk-in closet with Southern views of The Statue of Liberty. Corcoran's broker, Jared Seligman, also said, “You have a separate staff exit; you can have the most fabulous parties." I'd hope that with a preteen entertainment firm (Dualstar) raking in $1 billion a year, the Olsens could, at the very least, throw a good party...
