Nice and New: West Elm Decal Square Drum Table

West Elm has refreshed its inventory with plenty of Moroccan-inspired furnishings. As you might have suspected, I'm thrilled. One of my picks is the Decal Square Drum Table ($199) which, at 12-by-17 inches with silver-and-white Moroccan-inspired decals on porcelain, will add a small touch of North African style to your digs. Set it beside your favorite reading chair or sofa, use it as a bedside table, or even plop it beside your tub to hold towels and toiletries. You'll be
stumped to find a space where this adorable table doesn't make perfect sense.

Desire/Acquire: Tea Set Lamp

The Anthropologie One-Lump-or-Two Lamp ($198) is quite cute in a British country cottage way, and I adore its espresso cup finial. But, I'd say it's a tad overpriced for a table lamp that looks so crafty, and that doesn't come with a shade. Etsy seller Vintage Renaissance hand-crafts these Tea Set Lamps ($100) from vintage dishes so that each one is unique. You can choose your preferred color of Krylon spray paint for the base to personalize the lamp. Unfortunately, the shade is not included. I can see this lamp looking really cool with the right palette and a not-so-country-bumpkin shade. Personally, I'd go with a glossy white base and perhaps a tall, black, silk drum shade.

Steal of the Day: Square Metal Armchair

Even though this chair and its cushions are weather-resistant, I'm in favor of placing the west elm Square Metal Armchair (on sale for $99.99, marked down from $169) indoors. I love how its powder-coated metallic frame would add masculine definition to a space, especially one full of feminine curves. Try pairing it with a Moroccan-inspired drum table and some luxe pillows to make the whole look work.

Get the Look: Modern Rustic Kitchen

Since my mind's on all things eco chic, I'm ready to move right into this kitchen, which features recycled wooden cupboards contrasted by a modern, steel floor and steel-front appliances. The laid-back, casual feeling of the room is achieved by using neutral and cool colors and "lived-in" furnishings and accents. Start by painting the walls a warm, khaki color, and taking down your drapes or blinds to let in the light.

Furniture: Reclaimed wood storage is key to this rustic kitchen. Bring in a soft, leather club chair that you can wear in — or already have — to achieve that lived-in look. Choose a no-frills, clean-lined oak dining table, and pair it with a set of industrial steel French café stools.

Lighting: Set a table lamp on the kitchen counter; pick one with a shapely glass or iron base, and a drum shade in a a granite- or natural-colored drum shade. Overhead lighting should have the feel of the industrial age; look for a steel pendant to brighten your dining.

Accents: Any accents you use should be functional, aside from perhaps a black-and-white photograph hung on the wall. Grow herbs in a galvanized cache-pot. Cozy your leather club chair with a dark velvet pillow. Hold your fruits in a raw wood bowl, and odds and ends in a rubber tote. Pick a remarkable pepper mill that stands out on its own.

Casa Beta: Thomas O'Brien Small Crackle Glass Lamp

Target recently sent me the Thomas O'Brien Small Crackle Glass Lamp ($29.99), which is part of O'Brien's "Vintage Modern" line for Target's 2008 Fall Home Collection. When it comes to luminaries, I don't take things lightly. I have a mild obsession with light fixtures, and I like to have an eclectic mix of lamps, sconces, pendants, chandeliers, and candles in my home. When the table lamp arrived at my desk, I wasn't keen on the color of the shade. I thought perhaps I'd switch it out, or embroider it to give it a little face-lift. But as it turns out, the greenish brown color is quite versatile. It's not a statement piece, so the color does a good job of blending in. Anything fussier would compete with the base. The juxtaposition of the traditional empire shade and the modern crackled glass ball base certainly lives up to its "vintage modern" moniker, but I think actually a drum shade would look more appropriate. Overall, I think for a small lamp, this one has a great price. It's a bit ambiguous in style (traditional? modern?), so I think it would work well as a filler lamp in most homes for whatever dim corner is in need of a bit of light.

Steal of the Day: Titanium Garden Seat

Garden stools have been trendy for a couple years now, but I never understood why they were priced so high for what is basically a ceramic drum — see here and here. They're cute though, and versatile, as they can serve as seating or a small side table. If you feel the same, and haven't yet made the splurge, maybe the Ballard Designs Titanium Garden Seat ($89, reduced from $149) will appeal to you. I like its bead detailing
and Chinoiserie-style cutouts. Its price tag also won't break the bank, and its polished titanium finish doesn't have the tiresome cutesy kitsch of some of its brightly colored counterparts. Yay for sale items!

Steal of the Day: Crate & Barrel Dane Pendant Lamp

Faux bois may be a fading trend, but vrai bois (real wood) is not likely to ever lose its edge. That's especially true when it comes to handsome designs like the Crate & Barrel Dane Pendant Lamp ($64.95, reduced from $129). Made of a beautifully grained Brazilian sandalwood veneer shade, it will make a dapper focal point above your kitchen island or dining table. Maybe I'm just on a capiz pendant kick lately, but I'd have a hard time selling these sea shells by the shore. Overstock has been a good friend in the past, when it comes to steals. Today, I am bestowing upon you their Petite Sphere Crystal Table Lamp ($50). Its crystal ball base is simple, elegant, and chic — just the thing to shed a little light on a small side table or your favorite cozy corner. I'd suggest picking up another shade, though; the camel-colored shade that comes with it is a bit antiquated and tacky even. Go with a dark colored shade, perhaps in a drum shape, or a bold pattern to liven it up. A shade with some sort of circular pattern would be trendy and nicely mimic the base.
