Cool Idea: Dyed Doilies

Doilies are blowing up in the design world these days. Not only is there a doily motif trend, but the crocheted mats are being used in modern and alternative ways, such as hung in frames and stitched onto bedding. But a doily's life as an ornamental napkin is not over yet. You may remember I recommended dyeing your doilies to give them a quick update. Well if you need proof from a true tastemaker, see how Eddie Ross kicked the dated look of his Salvation Army doily finds by dyeing them with charcoal Rit dye. I love how the dark doilies dress up his simple table setting and really make his white linens pop. Beautiful. Do you have any doilies lying around in need of revival?

Casa Quickie: Personalize Basic Bedding

I've long admired stylist Sweet Paul's distinctive style. Besides prettifying the world of food and interiors, he also writes a great blog. Did I mention that he's also rather crafty?

Check out what he did to this basic linen bedspread. Using some vintage doilies, he personalized this very basic bedding. To get the same effect, pin the doilies in place, and then stitch them to the fabric. I have a feeling that Paul may have also tea-dyed the doilies to get that pretty color. Cool Idea: Modern Doilies

Kristan Cunningham, interior designer and Design on a Dime host, recently remodeled her rental apartment on a tiny budget. One of the ideas she shared with the LA Times was using her grandmother's antique doilies as decoration in her bedroom. This is yet another example of the growing modern doily motif trend I wrote about back in November. I love the way the simple, black backgrounds showcase the doilies and add a bit of feminine flair to the otherwise masculine, black-and-white bedroom.

Cool Idea: From Bridal Bouquet to Holiday Decoration

Since I'm asking you to post your holiday decorations for my Su Casa Challenge, I figured it was only fair for me to post a photo of a little of my holiday decorating.

This Summer, I had all of my bridesmaids wrap their bouquets in vintage doilies (which you can see in this photo, in my sister's bouquet) for my wedding. We also hung starched doilies from the trees at the ceremony site. Afterward, I saved the doilies because I knew I'd want to reuse them in some way; I just wasn't sure quite how I'd do it.

Since doilies look so much like snowflakes, adapting them was easy! I re-starched the doilies, attached them to satin ribbons, and then hung them from an overhead fixture that I'd festooned with clippings from our Christmas tree. Simple, sweet, and meaningful!

Trend Alert: Modern Doily Motifs

Granny was on to something with her doilies, but she just needed some helpful hints from a contemporary mind to get them looking right. I'm finding doily motifs everywhere but under a piece of cake these days, but this time they're not so geriatric. From furniture, like David Eveleigh and Melissa Evans's laser-cut Doily Table (inquire for price), to rugs, dinnerware, photo-etched enamel-painted copper plates, and doilies reinvented in felt and vinyl, the five-letter word is being spoken in a new dialect. Casa Quickie: Doilie Update

Do you love the look of doilies, but have a hard time integrating them into your home's decor? Vintage doilies can have a yellowed look to them, due to age, or have stains on a section. To instantly update their worn color, soak them in a strong dye bath. I use Rit Liquid Dye for my home-dying projects. Since doilies are most often made from cotton, the dye takes easily. Look at how beautiful this doily is in its updated blue hue. No one will accuse you of sporting grandma style when your doilies are deep purple, blue, or even hot pink!
