This Book Clock by Sjoerd van Heumen ($28) would like very cute nestled among the shelves of your home library, but with its bright primary colors, it's almost too cute for my taste. Tell me what you think.

DIY: Literary Clock

If you're stumped for a unique holiday gift, you could bring some timeliness to a friend's life with this book clock ($19.95) from Etsy seller Recycleeh. Or, if you're feeling handy, you might consider personalizing your friend or family member's favorite book by turning it into a clock.

To make this cool clock, simply choose a hardcover book, without a busy cover, so that the clock numbers are legible. The book also needs to be large enough to fit the clock hands. Aside from the book, you'll need a clock hands set (available at Michael's or other craft store), a ruler, a protractor, pen, paper, scissors, and a drill. The stem of the clock hands set varies between 1/4 and 3/4 inch, so be sure it fits the thickness of your book.

Here's how to do it, according to Instructables:

Use your ruler to find the center of your book. Then mark it with a pen.
If you like, spray paint your clock hands in a different color.
Drill a hole where you marked the center of the book. Your clock hand set should suggest what size drill bit to use, so follow its instructions.
According the instructions, install your clock hands and parts into the hole you drilled.
Using the longest clock hand as a guide for the radius, draw a circle onto a piece of paper with your pen using the protractor.
Cut out the circle, and center the template over the center of the book (where the clock hands are).
Adhere the clock numbers onto the book, a bit beyond the edge of the circle template, evenly all the way around. Begin with numbers 3, 6, 9, and 12 and then fill in the other numbers. Fini!

Flipping through the latest issue of Living Etc, I was awestruck by a cool grandfather clock. The quirky and modern design has built-in shelving to hold your housewares - perfect for kitchenware or books.

"Must. Have," I thought. Then I realized it was from Ikea. Could the world be any sweeter? Unfortunately, the answer is yes, it could be, because the design doesn't seem to be available in the States yet. Until then, I'll just have to settle with these cool clocks. But, if you live in the UK, you can buy it for £129.

A true minimalist is a tough person to shop for, but not impossible. He or she really may not want anything at all, but there are some things no functioning being can live without. You're probably thinking: food, water, shelter, right? Well, I'm thinking more along the lines of crucial homewares like discreet clocks and bookshelves, and home entertainment items like books on minimalism and a dock that hides all your unsightly charger cords. So for all of those bizarre non-consumer minimalists in your life, I've rounded up some gifts that will give them maximum pleasure. Just make sure you don't go crazy on the bows: they like their gift wrap stark.

DIY: Wine Crate Bedside Tables

Want a fun, fulfilling project? Have a bunch of champagne or wine crates you need to transform? Or maybe you want some unique, upcycled bedside tables that will cost you nearly nothing to make? Then check out these wine crate bedside tables.

This project was obviously inspired by the wine crate display cases from Design*Sponge, but I've decided to use them for bedside tables instead of mounting them on the wall. I also applied a coat of linseed oil wood stain on the exterior to match our bedroom.

Here's what you need:

two wine crates
paint or stain for the wine crates
wrapping or craft paper that has a great design
scissors
a ruler
paint brushes (one large and one small)
Mod Podge

Paint the exterior of the crates, along with the edges, with your chosen color of paint or stain.
Let dry overnight in a well-aerated area (such as a garage or a porch).
Measure the sides for depth and length, and cut paper to your measurements.
Using Mod Podge or similar fixative, brush glue onto the wood, lay down paper, smooth flat, and then apply glue to the top of paper. Repeat for each side of box.
Let dry, then arrange in your bedroom to your liking. Books fit great in the interior, and there's enough room on top for lamps, clocks, and other bedroom essentials.

Primer: A Well-Equipped Guest Room

Old-fashioned homemaking wisdom says that everyone should sleep in her own guest room at least once, to see how it feels and make improvements. (As the guest in many rooms over the years, I can safely say that most people do not do this.) Of course, if you live in a smallish apartment or house, you may not have a spare room, but that doesn't mean you should ignore your guests' needs, even if they're just crashing on the couch.

So I've put together a quick checklist that covers the basic essentials that any good guest room (or mere guest space) should have. To see if yours is up to par, read more

clean towels, perhaps laid out on the bed
a well-lighted mirror
a bedside table and reading lamp
a few well-chosen books and magazines
a wastebasket
paper and a nice pen
a closet with plenty of free hangers
an alarm clock
a night light, if the room is unusually dark
