With a palette that is mostly black and white, the accents of color in this Stockholm home really pop. Beyond that, Dutch decorator André Schievink courageously mixed minimalism with kitsch, antiques with Ikea, in a way that makes each piece stand out. For instance, in the dining room an ancient dining table is surrounded by plastic Verner Panton S Chairs, and next door a slick modern table lamp sits curiously on a period grand piano.

When shopping for accessories, bedding, and table linens, I tend to gravitate toward color. But I am also very much a solids girl. So I'm thinking that a geometric black and white wallpaper would give me the pop and pattern that I need, while still allowing me to go crazy with colorful accessories.

I love too many colors and styles to ever go only black, white, and modern, but I applaud he who has the restraint (and the balls) to do it. I spotted this large Georgian house in Tetbury, a small town in — believe it or not — the Cotswolds, and was blown away. Short of a dab of yellow paint in some artwork and its plush green lawn, the house is all black, white, and gray, and each room is essentially either entirely black or white.

I'm not one to steer away from color or pattern, but I think there is something to be said for monochrome interiors. In a vibrant, busy space, shapes can become lost and ignored, but a more pared down design can accentuate your furnishings, reminding you each day of why you fell for them in the first place. Take the chandeliers in the photograph, for example.

While reading the design blog Black White Yellow, I was really impressed by the author's cheerful and stylish home, so I asked if she'd be willing to give us a photographic tour of her home. She lives in New Orleans, where she works as an architect, so it's no surprise that she has a keen eye for design. But what's truly inspiring about her happy, chic home is that she's created it on small budget.

While flipping through photographer Emma Lee's portfolio, I came across this gorgeous black-and-white pillow vignette. I love how stark and dramatic these two colors can look together. I immediately thought of the Kartell Bourgie Table Lamp ($362), and then began to wonder what other lovely home elements in black and white I might find.

From black-and-white ball gowns to checkerboard floor tiles, this classic color combination just oozes simple sophistication. Add a few feminine flourishes, curves, and floral patterns, and you've got a major home-decorating trend for fall and winter.
These furniture pieces and home accents are unfussy but just ornate enough to look elegant and not the slightest bit masculine.

Chances are, you or someone you know has owned an Ikea Billy Bookcase ($59.99 to $79.00) at one time or another. The shelves are perfectly basic, big, and sturdy, and, therefore, wildly popular with bargain-seekers everywhere.
Now, in addition to black, silver, white, and various wood stains, you can get the Billy Bookcase in a black-and-white floral pattern for a mere $59.99.

I usually don't like products categorized as "wall decor" because I feel like they're equivalent to the mass-produced artwork you can buy at major inexpensive retail stores. They are by no means original, and your friends might recognize them from aisle #9, where they bought toilet paper in bulk
That said, these Black & White Pattern Plaques ($89) from Ballard Design are changing my mind—or at the very least proving themselves to be the exception to my rule. In this case, I like "wall decor," and I like them enough to share.

I spotted this photo in the portfolio of photographer Joanna Henderson and I'm absolutely in love with it. Not only is the light beautiful, but the space couldn't be any more understatedly elegant. The trompe-l'œil grandfather clock is simply great for that white wall, and it pairs perfectly with those bentwood chairs.
