4 Modernist Designers to Watch According to Vas Kiniris

With over 20 years of modern design shop success, Zinc Details owner Vas Kiniris has taken a front seat to the evolution of the movement.

With over 20 years of modern design shop success, Zinc Details owner Vas Kiniris has taken a front seat to the evolution of the movement. While a healthy inventory of midcentury-style classics are still part of the San Francisco based store's allure, it's Vas's appetite for discovering the next generation of design icons that keeps shoppers coming back. We caught up with Vas to introduce us to the new modernists he's most excited about.

"Mike & Maaike is an amazing industrial design studio led by an American husband and Dutch wife team based in San Francisco."

"Klaus Haapaniemi has a fantastic dinnerware line for Iitala. I especially love the new botanically-inspired Korento collection!"

Keep reading to see which other modernist designers are on Vas's radar!

Tastemaker Tips: Modernism 101 With Vas Kiniris of Zinc Details

Twenty years ago, $1,000 was all it took for Zinc Details owner Vas Kiniris to set up shop in San Francisco's Tenderloin hood.

Twenty years ago, $1,000 was all it took for Zinc Details owner Vas Kiniris to set up shop in San Francisco's Tenderloin hood. Determined to shake the town out of its postmodern slumber, Vas set out to bring the cool, avant-garde aesthetic from his European travels back to his 200-square-foot store. After winning honorable mentions during his first showing at ICFF, Vas knew he was onto something. Twenty years later, Zinc Details inhabits a much larger space in San Francisco's Pacific Heights neighborhood and services retail, wholesale, and ecommerce shoppers. As a staple in the San Francisco design community, Vas loves to hold screenings, tastings, and viewings at the store, to "keep the conversation going" about modern design.

If you're in the San Francisco Bay Area, check out the launch of Zinc Details' Borgias Unveiled window display tonight and scope out the space. If San Francisco is too far, not to worry! I've reeled in Vas to share his tips for introducing high-impact doses of modernism into any home.

Joined by a passion for the modern furniture classics, after graduating from Berkeley in 1990, Vasilios Kiniris and Wendy Nishimura founded the store with the intention of selling not trendy modern pieces, but those with integrity and lasting value.

Nearly twenty years later, they have outgrown several shops, begun an extensive e-commerce site, and become the major Northern California distributor of KnollSpace home furnishings. In addition to Knoll, they also consistently stock Artemide, Blu Dot, Copenhagen, Design House Stockholm, Kartell, Le Klint, Marimekko, Offi, and Vitra products. Good, Better, Best: Not Your Average Umbrella Stand

Unless you're a character in The Notebook, or Rupert Holmes, most of you don't like getting caught in the rain.

Unless you're a character in The Notebook, or Rupert Holmes, most of you don't like getting caught in the rain. And personally, what I find worse, is bringing that soggy drip into my house. I wouldn't mind it though, if I were the proud owner of one of these fly umbrella stands. Better yet, this Stand Umbrella ($60) has three little feet that allow it to stand on its own, so it doesn't even require a stand!

Good: This Aki Umbrella Stand ($150), designed by former jazz drummer
Rodolfo Bonetto, is simple, minimalist, and comes in a handful of iridescent and solid colors. It's a sharp alternative to the bulky umbrella stands we see in foyers across the country. That is, if your guests can recognize what it is when they arrive wet.

Nice and New: Zinc Details Corner Lamp

I just spotted this Corner Lamp ($195), designed by Roberto Cárdenas amongst Zinc Details' new inventory, and thought I'd share.

I just spotted this Corner Lamp ($195), designed by Roberto Cárdenas amongst Zinc Details' new inventory, and thought I'd share. Two sides of this floor lamp's shade (and base) meet at a 90 degree angle, so you can make the most of those dark and difficult corners. It would be a clever solution for someone without much space to work with next to a beside table or in a reading nook. It's a bright idea on its own, but also would be smashing combined with one or three other Corner Lamps.
