Love It or Hate It? Black Backsplash Tile

White subway tiles are a classic and quite pervasive design element.

White subway tiles are a classic and quite pervasive design element. While I applaud their timelessness, I love to see something new and different every once in a while. So when I stumbled across this kitchen with black subway tiles, I thought, "Huh. How clever and simple." There's nothing outrageous or trendy about these tiles, but the alternative — and very versatile — color choice is refreshing. Plus, the dark hue is also a wizard at camouflaging cooking splatter. What do you think of this black backsplash?

Nice and New: Dwell Tile Patterns by Heath Ceramics

Two Bay Area companies are joining forces and revamping the way we think of tilework.

Two Bay Area companies are joining forces and revamping the way we think of tilework. On sale Aug. 1, Dwell Magazine and Heath Ceramics have created a beautiful line of tile for the home. Even though Dwell Patterns by Heath Ceramics is only made up of three tile shapes (a diamond, a half hexagon, and a large hexagon), the shapes can actually be configured into five different combinations. After finding the perfect combination, buyers can choose from any of Heath's signature glazes for a truly unique and stunning backsplash, shower, or anywhere in need of a little pop.

Dust off your trigonometry skills and the options become endless. True to Dwell's aesthetic, the 3D effect fits well with modern décor, but almost everyone can appreciate the fantastic design brought forth by two smart brands. My heart is won over by these fantastic layouts — now if only I needed to retile something in my pad.

DIY: Pretty Tile Coasters

I have a terrible problem.

I have a terrible problem. It's an addiction really. I sometimes fall in love with items I have no use for but I buy them anyway. I recently found some tiles that were begging to jump in my shopping bag, so I forked over the cash and packed them in my suitcase. I couldn't figure out what to do with them until I watched an episode of Parenthood. One of the props on the counter was a stack of pretty little drink plates. A quick trip to the craft store and I've got myself a pretty new set of table coasters!

Nice and New: Henry Road Glass Tiles For ModWalls

Textile house Henry Road has given its cheerful patterns a firmer face with a new collection of glass tiles for ModWalls.

Textile house Henry Road has given its cheerful patterns a firmer face with a new collection of glass tiles for ModWalls. Made with a mesh backing, kiln-fired to ModWalls' signature Lush glass tiles, they can be used in indoor, outdoor, commercial, residential, wet, or dry spaces (although not on floors). With nature-inspired and graphic motifs, the tiles are certainly contemporary, but also very lively and fun. I wouldn't cover an expansive space with them, since they're not the most classic designs. But they'd be ideal for a kitchen backsplash or the surface of an outdoor bar! The tiles are available in a few colorways, and here are the designs you can choose from:

Julie, who writes the awesome blog Mamaphunk, recently took her kitchen from drab to fab with a total makeover. She writes, "My husband and I did everything except install the cabinets and countertops, we're good but not that good! I wanted to go for an Anthropologie-like vibe and I think I did a decent job. I also love color and really wanted to make a splash."

Casa Quickie: Say Goodbye to Grout Grime

Do you have some grubby looking grout in between your bathroom floor tiles?

Do you have some grubby looking grout in between your bathroom floor tiles? Don't despair, or resort to super-toxic cleansers or harsh bleach. You could try using oxygen bleach, as I've suggested in the past. Or, try using liquid dish detergent or toothpaste to get the grime out. Simply squeeze either the detergent or toothpaste onto a sponge, and scrub vigorously. Have you tried this method at your home?

Casa Quickie: Clean Dirty Grout With Oxygen Bleach

While I work hard to keep my bathroom pristine, the tile grout on the ceramic tile floor can often look less than fresh.

While I work hard to keep my bathroom pristine, the tile grout on the ceramic tile floor can often look less than fresh. What to do? Well, it often requires a little elbow grease, and a lot of scrubbing. Here's another tip: don't use chlorine bleach. Chlorine bleach can often discolor grout, so instead, opt for oxygen bleach. And since oxygen bleach breaks down to oxygen and water, you can count this bleach on the more eco side of your cleaning routine.

Love It or Hate It? Mirror Tiled Steps

You all seemed to love the tiled text staircase I showed you, which makes me think you may warm up to these mirror tiled steps.

You all seemed to love the tiled text staircase I showed you, which makes me think you may warm up to these mirror tiled steps. I think the juxtaposition of the old, wooden banister and the small mirrored tiles makes this look work. But on a modern staircase, it might look tacky and too disco. You must admit the light reflected by the tiles is beautiful, though. It's a good thing the tiles are petite, so you can't actually see your own reflection. What do you say? Yea or nay?
