Cool Idea: Rugged Headboard and Framed Wall Art

Traditional children's rooms aren't really my style.

Traditional children's rooms aren't really my style. I'd choose a striped room with faux animal busts over a teddy bear theme any day of the week, which is why I'm smitten with the boudoirs featured in Serena and Lily's latest catalog. Forget the toddlers: I'm moving into this pad!

The grocery flats behind the bed serve as an economical yet funky way to bring a rugged look to the room. Add a fresh image — be it a letter, a decal, or a pair of antlers — and it makes for an easy way to add "artwork" to any room.

Roundup: Frame It

This year for Christmas, I received a very cool print by artist Kelly Louise Judd.

This year for Christmas, I received a very cool print by artist Kelly Louise Judd. Of course, I still haven't gotten around to framing it! I have a feeling that I'm not the only procrastinator when it comes to framing artwork. It's one of those bottom-of-the-list tasks that we often forget, yet once the artwork is matted, framed, and hung, it can make such an amazing difference in a home.

I've had to spend big bucks on frames in the past, due to artwork or silkscreens that were of a very odd size. However, if you're lucky enough to have received a pretty piece of art that's a standard size, I've found that Ikea's Ribba Frames ($3 and up) are a great option. They come in different colors and sizes, are already matted, and are quite inexpensive. I've also had several of the larger Ribba frames in my home for at least two years, and they've held up very well, even given some minor earthquake tremors.

Looking for something a little more out of the ordinary, or simply a different option at a reasonable price? Check out my finds below.

Take the Guesswork Out of Monthly Photo Sessions

No need to put a caption on these photos.

No need to put a caption on these photos. The cost and ease of use of digital cameras allow new parents to photograph every first their child experiences. Gone are the days where moms would dress baby up and run to the local mall to have monthly photo sessions to capture their lil one's growth over the course of their first year. Now, mama can prop baby up on the couch and shoot endlessly, ultimately picking the single best shot to share with family and friends.

With Squigglybee's Today I Am onesies ($15), bibs ($10) and t-shirts ($13), there is no need to think about what baby will wear for her photo shoot, and no need to caption the photos for future reference. The spot-on pieces feature monthly and annual milestones making them great gifts for baby showers and hospital visits. Once a year's worth of photos has been taken, first-year photo frames can showcase just how much baby has grown. Check out some of our favorite frames below.

Casa Quickie: Fasten With Ribbon For Extra Sweetness

This photo from phenomenal cake shop Miette in San Francisco features a delicious detail: hanging framed pictures from ribbons.

This photo from phenomenal cake shop Miette in San Francisco features a delicious detail: hanging framed pictures from ribbons. I've seen this technique employed at another local sweet shop in the Bay Area, so I wonder if there's a connection between satin and sugar. Whether or not you serve cake at your own casa, adding ribbons to your framed artwork will sweeten up your home base. To do so in your own home, buy some picture frame hooks, seasonally appropriate ribbon, and get to work. I love the idea of changing out an icy blue or Spring green for a Summer-inspired bright orange or kelly green come June, don't you?

Pimp Your Crib: Ultrasound Picture Frame

Thanks to technology, you're able to get a look at your wee one before she makes her debut.
Koala Baby at ShopStyle

Thanks to technology, you're able to get a look at your wee one before she makes her debut. New parents cherish the blurry black and white image that is their bundle of joy's first ultrasound picture and the refrigerator door (where it usually ends up) hardly seems like a worthy spot to display it. Instead, frame it. Simple frames such as the Koala Baby Sonogram Frame ($17) will show off your prized possession.

Double the Frames for a Dramatic Effect

Sgdish writes on Su Casa that she "found this adorable oil painting of a Yorkie on eBay, but it needed a little 'something something,' so I came up with adding an extra antique frame around the picture to give it more presence.

Sgdish writes on Su Casa that she "found this adorable oil painting of a Yorkie on eBay, but it needed a little 'something something,' so I came up with adding an extra antique frame around the picture to give it more presence. Try it with a piece of art that just isn't big enough."

I love this idea, and I love that painting, too. Sgdish, by the way, is a proud owner of four Yorkies herself, so the painting has a lot of personal meaning, I'm sure.

Nice and New: Umbra PhotoArt Paint by Numbers Frame

I adore the distinctively kitschy look of paint-by-numbers art, not to mention the quaint "everyone's an artist!"

I adore the distinctively kitschy look of paint-by-numbers art, not to mention the quaint "everyone's an artist!" idea behind it. Completed number paintings can be great thrift-store finds, and now the frame-mavens at Umbra have come up with the PhotoArt Frame ($55).

Designed by Sative Turner and fashioned from birch, the paint-by-number frame comes with a brush, paint, and an instruction sheet. It holds a 5-by-7 photo, so you can use your finished artwork to display the image of your choosing.
