The Selby Coming To A Home Near You

You know when you're hanging out in your apartment and the place looks really nice and you're having a good 'messy' hair day and you're just generally feeling pretty into yourself--this is when you wish Todd Selby was there.

You know when you're hanging out in your apartment and the place looks really nice and you're having a good 'messy' hair day and you're just generally feeling pretty into yourself--this is when you wish Todd Selby was there. Don't know what we're talking about? Well, set aside an hour and make yourself a hot cup of tea and check out the next best hipster documentarian out there. Selby, close as he may be with Mark the Cobrasnake, captures subjects from all walks of life, most of whom are poised in the comfort of their own homes. Author Tom Wolfe, publisher of Paper Magazine Kim Hastreiter, and designer Alexander Wang are all featured on Selby's site, their personal effects playing as great a role as do their portraits. What's more, at the end of each shoot you'll find a brief handwritten interview with the subjects.

Here's to the next evolution in online portraiture and the birth of the Coutorture lifestyle section where we can finally talk about something other than sequins (wink, wink). Namely, New York photographers and other well-dressed citizens.

Click the homemade hyper jpg below for some of our favorite Todd Selby shots and don't forget to check out the website proper, right here ladies and gents.

Books

Hello Beautiful Books, We Missed You

Last night over beer and wine (and, let's face it, a spirit or two) a friend of ours muttered something about canceling his cable to save money.

Last night over beer and wine (and, let's face it, a spirit or two) a friend of ours muttered something about canceling his cable to save money. After bowling over with laughter at the drama of it all he set us straight. You see, we don't have television so we didn't know that cable television can cost an innocent person an arm and a leg! Seriously, an arm and a leg! "Better hit the library" was what one of us dribbled out in response to this news.

The conversation made us think of a book we recently discovered by way of The Nonist (RIP) in a post he wrote entitled, "Hot Library Smut". It's a very postmodern thing indeed; a big glossy book with pictures of big glossy (okay, some dusty) books. For anyone who has ever fancied themselves a fan of the library atmosphere, you will soon find yourself dreaming of traveling to far away places (where you can sit down and dream of far away places).

Midday Muse: Everyday Art

French photographer JR is known for his political art installations, but that doesn't mean every picture he captures is rife with controversial content.

French photographer JR is known for his political art installations, but that doesn't mean every picture he captures is rife with controversial content. Sometimes, the message is more subtle. While JR may simply be showing us the gorgeous colors and patterns of the clothing on this line in Monrovia, Liberia, I, of course, will use the image to urge you to create your own fabric art installation in your backyard — on your clothesline.

Wedding Planner: Advice From a Wedding Photographer

Wedding photographer Jessamyn Harris is known for taking lovely, striking images of couples in love.

Wedding photographer Jessamyn Harris is known for taking lovely, striking images of couples in love. I recently interviewed her about her business, and she provided all of those brides-to-be out there with valuable knowledge about what to look for when choosing a wedding photographer. Read on to find out all about Jessamyn's advice for hiring a wedding photographer, and if you're interested in hiring her, you can do so here.

CasaSugar: What's your favorite part about being a wedding photographer?

Jessamyn: Definitely the people I get to work with. I am really lucky to work with kind and creative clients who genuinely want a beautiful wedding because they love each other, and to whom artistic photography is a high priority. Combine that with gorgeous details to photograph, and it's a pretty nice setup. The best moments are when I really feel the connection between the bride and groom during the big and small moments of their wedding day, and of course when I know I got an amazing shot.

Personages: Lee Miller

An article in this week's issue of the New Yorker had us thinking about personage.

An article in this week's issue of the New Yorker had us thinking about personage. It seems New York is the only place you can escape the American obsession with celebrity (not that it can't be found), and yet The New Yorker understands the importance of rewarding true distinction with a heady word count. And boy are we better off.

Who the flip is Lee Miller? Good question.

Lee Miller was a woman who used to date Man Ray. See, there's the ticket. You remember being told that once, right? Yeah, so do we. After the jump, a quick profile that includes a little more than Man Ray, if you should miss the six page (not page six) article.

Bryan Adams, Singer And Fashion Photographer

Bryan Adams' music video for "The Only Thing That Looks Good On Me is You" featured a runway show, but did you know that his love for fashion goes beyond a made-up catwalk?

Bryan Adams' music video for "The Only Thing That Looks Good On Me is You" featured a runway show, but did you know that his love for fashion goes beyond a made-up catwalk? The Canadian crooner is the fashion photog behind Guess' Spring '08 ad campaign with model Line Gost (left). He did a great job capturing the sexiness of Sophia Loren, the inspiration for the ads. But wait, Adams' fashion photography experience doesn't end there. He recently met up with friend and designer of Ports 1961 Tia Cibani to shoot a look book at Bungalow 1 at the Chateau Marmont. In the past, Bryan's photos have graced the pages of British Vogue, L'uomo Vogue, Harper's Bazaar, and Vanity Fair. I wonder what's up his fashionable sleeve next!

Photographer to Watch: Ron van Dongen

Born in Judibana, Venezuela, in 1961, photographer Ron van Dongen was raised in Warmond, The Netherlands.

Born in Judibana, Venezuela, in 1961, photographer Ron van Dongen was raised in Warmond, The Netherlands. After moving to the US's West Coast, he studied photography at the Academy of Art College in San Francisco and currently resides in Portland, Oregon. While he's photographed flora, fauna, and the human form, my favorite photographs of his are by far those of flora. His lovely meditations on singular blooms and extreme close-up shots of vegetables make you reconsider the meaning of these humble plants.

Photographer to Watch: Margaret Mulligan

Margaret Mulligan is a photographer from Toronto, Canada who has been commissioned by hotels, museums, restaurants, housing developers, flower shops, and other Canadian and international businesses.

Margaret Mulligan is a photographer from Toronto, Canada who has been commissioned by hotels, museums, restaurants, housing developers, flower shops, and other Canadian and international businesses. Her work has been printed in several magazines, including Canadian Home and Country, Flare, Toronto Life, Toronto Life City Guide, Homemakers, enRoute, Canadian Living, and Style at Home. She also shoots for "the holy grail" of Canadian home décor, Canadian House and Home. Press history aside, her photographs are breathtaking, and her talent is intimidating.

What amazes me about her work is her sense of composure. She takes beautiful photographs of high-design hotels—which I assume were designed by architects and interior designers who sought a composed, angular look. However, Mulligan finds striking lines, diagonals, and curves in all of her subjects, whether she's shooting a couple of pigs in a dirty farm stall, a daydreaming man in a coffee shop, or the Royal Ontario Museum.
