La Luna Finds For the Biggest Full Moon in 18 Years

Tonight, the moon will make its closest approach to Earth in 18 years, which means it will be the biggest full moon in years.

Tonight, the moon will make its closest approach to Earth in 18 years, which means it will be the biggest full moon in years. I hope that the skies are clear in your neighborhood so you can get a glance at this natural wonder. If you're looking to add la luna in your home, there are plenty of pretty options. One of my favorites is the Fornasetti Theme and Variations Pillow ($135). And for all of you Once fans out there, the moon-themed Swell Season Handprinted Poster ($40) is a perfect addition to your home gallery. To shop the rest of the look, just click on each image.

Cool Idea: Pun-Inspired Design

If you read Casa often, you may have noticed that I love a good (or bad) pun.

If you read Casa often, you may have noticed that I love a good (or bad) pun. I just can't resist them; it's almost an illness. So, it should come as no surprise that when I stepped onto the second-floor landing of Metropolitan Home's Modern by Design showhouse and saw a series of moon photographs and a bright orange rocket, I was astronomically smitten. This little design pun is subtle, I think, but charming. And it's not forced: the framed photographs are beautiful and the orange rocket pops against the gray walls. If "Major Tom" were playing in the background, I'd probably never disembark.

2009 Tribeca Film Festival Spotlight: Moon

I've been perusing the long list of interesting-looking movies scheduled for this year's Tribeca Film Festival, which starts this week. Some of them, like Moon, are already earning buzz, and I'm anxious to find out what festivalgoers think once they've screened.

Starring Sam Rockwell, Moon is the directorial debut of David Bowie's son, Duncan Jones. The movie has already built some momentum from this year's Sundance Film Festival and now there's a trailer for it. And the trailer is creepy.

The movie takes place in the not-so-distant future and follows astronaut Sam Bell (Rockwell) who is completing a three-year stint on the moon where his only company has been a computer (voiced by Kevin Spacey) named GERTY. From the looks of the trailer, all that time alone on the moon starts to seriously affect Sam's emotional state. Most of the reviews so far say that this is a pretty terrific entry to the sci-fi/horror genre that's buoyed by a great performance from Rockwell.

Roundup: Heavenly Bodies

Today marks the convergence of two celestial occurrences.

Today marks the convergence of two celestial occurrences. The first event is the first solar eclipse of 2009, which will be visible as a full eclipse from the Indian Ocean to western Indonesia. And the second event is the Lunar New Year, which is celebrated throughout China and East Asia with dances, firecrackers, red and gold decorations, and visits to family and friends. To commemorate this unique convergence of two heavenly bodies, I thought I'd gather together some solar- and lunar-inspired home goods that will add some celestial seasoning to your home turf.

Moving to the Moon? Scientists Say Moon Can Hold Water

Scientists think the moon's polar craters, which never see sunlight, could contain ice.

Scientists think the moon's polar craters, which never see sunlight, could contain ice. A lunar water supply means that astronauts would be able to use the moon as a home base for space exploration. The US, EU, Japan, India, and China already have plans for permanent moon bases to be set up around 2025.

If astronauts begin living permanently on the moon, I don't see why nonscientists wouldn't soon pack up and move to outer space shortly after. The moon's only three days away — much shorter than the ship voyage made by Europeans moving to the New World, for example.

Would you move to a settlement on the moon? Would you worry that territory disputes could break out between settlers from different countries?

Immaterial: Lena Wald Spike Ring

The rhythms of the world exist whether or not modernity has seen fit to erase our awareness of the physical world.

The rhythms of the world exist whether or not modernity has seen fit to erase our awareness of the physical world. Observing the celestial sphere has been a prime human task since the world was light only by fire. Traditions of The Sun helps us recapture this lineage. As we browsed the observatories we were reminded of the pyramid trends so prevalent now in jewelry. Lena Wald's Spike Ring in Silver evokes for us the striving Yucatan observatories with their cool gray stone layered to help us reach for the sky. And like the moon that reflects the sun's light in silver, these inspirations reflect back our natural world.
