On the Lighter Side

Feeling full from the holidays?

Feeling full from the holidays? Fresh Tart's got some great healthy, but delicious suggestions.
grilled salmon salad with greens avocado

I am stuffed to the max from rich holiday foods.  Even though I was successful in avoiding gluten and grains, the salt really catches up to me.  Puff city.  And after a week of heavier foods, salads, fish, and brothy soups just sound so right to me.

While these recipes aren't new, I thought you might appreciate having a few ideas for taking it down a notch this week.  Above is one of my favorite salads, Grilled Salmon with Greens and Avocado.  Warm salmon, cool greens, and a mustard vinaigrette hit the spot in any season.

Let Your Cables Stand Out: The NUD Cable Collection

If you're obsessed with going wireless because of a few unattractive power cables, then maybe these will help you ease up on your cord management obsession.

If you're obsessed with going wireless because of a few unattractive power cables, then maybe these will help you ease up on your cord management obsession. The NUD Collection of cables and lights is an eye-catching group of textile-wrapped cables which come in different (read: fashionable) colors and textures, meant to draw attention rather than blend in.

Currently available only for geeks living in Europe (lucky dogs, you!), the NUD cables come with porcelain lightbulb holders (so you can hang your lights in style), in power brick form with multiple outlets, and as extension cords, keeping your behind-the-TV outlets looking fresh. All the NUD cables come in varying lengths from one to 10 meters (that's three to 32 feet for the rest of you), so you can style your room around your power from now on, instead of the other way around.

Check out a few more images of these oh-so-stylish power cables when you read more

Color Me Happy: Ink Cartridge Hanging Lamps

The good people of Etsy are never short on creativity, but being able to produce something as stylish and eco-friendly as these recycled Ink Cartridge Hanging Lamps ($45) takes some serious skills.

The good people of Etsy are never short on creativity, but being able to produce something as stylish and eco-friendly as these recycled Ink Cartridge Hanging Lamps ($45) takes some serious skills. Made from four disassembled Epson ink cartridges (of varying colors, natch), these lights are a brilliant example of recycling savvy that also preform a basic function — lighting your room. Best part? You can customize the colors when you order to get the exact look you want. I'd love to hang a few of these from the ceiling of my office, or heck, even my living room. Let's not pretend — I like to wave my geek flag pretty proudly.

Desire/Acquire: Chandelier Canvas Light

I've been fawning over the Duffy London Glo Canvas ($339) ever since I included it in my Modern Marie Antoinette Get the Look back in September 2007.

I've been fawning over the Duffy London Glo Canvas ($339) ever since I included it in my Modern Marie Antoinette Get the Look back in September 2007. Unfortunately, it hasn't gotten any cheaper, and I'm reluctant to spend so much on a transient style. Luckily, I've just come across a much more affordable alternative. To see it, read more

Whitney Port's friend Erin on The City has a youthful, rock 'n roll style when it comes to her apartment décor. While her trendy accessories aren't exactly timeless, I think they're fun and appropriate for a young chica. I'm particularly smitten with her Gummi Bear lamp, and had to hunt one down for myself. Light Up Your Life to Beat the Winter Blues

Adjusting to the suddenly dark evenings is a little rough for me, even though I truly enjoy and take advantage of the extra light in the morning.

Adjusting to the suddenly dark evenings is a little rough for me, even though I truly enjoy and take advantage of the extra light in the morning. Lack of it makes me a little blue; does it do that to you, too? One way to perk up your mood is to increase the amount light you enjoy on a daily basis. While getting up and exercising in the morning sun for 30 to 60 minutes can help relieve the Winter blues, that can be a tall order, especially when it is cold. Spending more time exposed to sunlight during the day can help, too. So get out and walk at lunch to see the sun during the day.

It might also help to increase the amount of artificial light in your office or house in the darkened evening hours. You can brighten things up with eco-friendly compact fluorescent light bulbs. The light spectrum emitted by fluorescent bulbs has a greater potential to lift your spirits than the spectrum from traditional incandescent bulbs. So make your life a bit more cheery by turning on some lights.

Cool Idea: Ceiling Medallion Light

Switzerland-based product design consultancy Life Goods designed the Ceiling Light, which mimics the shape of a traditional ceiling medallion.

Switzerland-based product design consultancy Life Goods designed the Ceiling Light, which mimics the shape of a traditional ceiling medallion. I've always loved ornate ceiling medallions, so it's refreshing to see the design take on a different function. The design doesn't seem to be in production, but I'll be the first to get my hands on the clever luminary if it ever is. There aren't too many good-looking ceiling lights out there, and there are thousands of rental apartments ridden with eyesore ceiling lights, so I'd love to see this sold at an affordable price point. It's also just a great alternative to a chandelier; it may not dangle down from the ceiling with crystal stones but it's still a glamorous piece. What do you think?

Steal of the Day: Mixko Delight Belle Light

I don't know what it is about butterflies lately, but they've had my heart all aflutter.

I don't know what it is about butterflies lately, but they've had my heart all aflutter. The cutout butterflies on the Mixko Delight Belle Light ($49, reduced from $83) are quite dainty and appeal to the side of me that secretly loves pink, unicorns, and party dresses. And I love how the light just seems to peek through its skirted edge. I also don't think I've ever seen a felt lamp shade before . . . people seem to use whatever they can get their hands on these days (kitchen canisters, Tupperware, vellum). No, I don't think my husband would be a fan of this Lepidopteran light, but it would be quite cute in a girl's bedroom or a feminine powder room.
