In your blog travels, you may have come across the Dekoop Gorgeous Helen Wine Shades which tops off your wine glasses to make easy votive lamps for your parties.

In your blog travels, you may have come across the Dekoop Gorgeous Helen Wine Shades which tops off your wine glasses to make easy votive lamps for your parties. I couldn't get them off my mind for months when I first saw them; I thought they were so clever. Sadly, they are no longer available for purchase but then, lucky me, I came across a DIY to make them. The project is fairly simple, and allows a lot of room for creativity. You can leave yours as plain vellum, or punch decorative holes in them, screen-print them, or even paint them! It's up to you, but regardless, this project is fabulous, inexpensive, and perfect for that wedding you're planning!

Supplies:

Here's how, from Save On Crafts:

  1. Download and print out this lampshade pattern.
  2. Trace the pattern onto your vellum sheet. Cut out the shape with your regular scissors. If you want, you can use decorative bladed scissors along the bottom edge to add another element to the shade.
  3. If you like, use a paper punch to punch holes evenly or haphazardly throughout the shade, as shown in the PDF.
  4. Using the glue pen, apply a thin line of glue to one straight end. Wrap the other end over the glued end, and adhere together, forming the shade.
  5. Secure the tealight with the candle putty, and set the lampshade on top of your glass. Fini!

Love It or Hate It? Snowdust Lampshade

Industrial design graduate Olga Kravchenko's Snowdust Lampshade is designed to celebrate dust.

Industrial design graduate Olga Kravchenko's Snowdust Lampshade is designed to celebrate dust. Dust, she says, looks best when it accumulates in a natural environment. So with its mass of branch-like shapes, the lampshade is just the thing to catch the small particles as they fall. If Swiffer is your best friend, this lamp probably won't jive with your cleaning routine. But if you're the sort of person who loves any excuse not to clean, maybe it's a match made in heaven.

Love It or Hate It? Feathered Lampshades

We've seen feathers adorning tables, adorning armchairs, and printed up on rugs, pillows, and cards.

We've seen feathers adorning tables, adorning armchairs, and printed up on rugs, pillows, and cards. I think that the feathery lampshade in this home adds a needed touch of fun in an otherwise sleek and serious abode. But the larger question remains: are feathered lampshades in general a yes or a no? Do you think that they're fabulous on the homefront, or are they for the birds?

Casa Quickie: It's a Hat Trick

If you ever find yourself with an excess of hats and lampshades, and shortage of hat stands and lamp bases, you've got an easy-peasy hat stand in the making.

If you ever find yourself with an excess of hats and lampshades, and shortage of hat stands and lamp bases, you've got an easy-peasy hat stand in the making. I usually store my knitted hats folded and stacked on a shelf in my closet, but as for my woven hats, I prefer to store them with a little structure so they don't get bent out of shape. Unfortunately though, they don't make hat stands like they used to; hat stands and coat trees these days are one and the same. So I was pretty pleased when I was struck with some sort of divine revelation and realized the small spare lampshades I have lying around can be used as hat stands! It couldn't be easier: just set one on top of the other and you're done! Clever, eh?

Love It or Hate It? Cork Lampshade

Do you have to tie a string around your pinky when a lightbulb goes off in your head?

Do you have to tie a string around your pinky when a lightbulb goes off in your head? If I don't write my ideas down immediately, they are gone like the wind. Post-it notes are my saving grace and while I certainly stick them in odd places from time to time, this Cork Pendant Lampshade ($250) gives new meaning to a "lightbulb moment." The cork drum is intriguing, but I'm thinking it would be more charming on its own than with photos or random postcards adorning it. What do you think of the quirky use of cork?

Dutch design studio and shop Tas-ka sells this Birdshade ($232), which is made of paper origami cranes. I love the idea of using origami pieces to create something that's more than the sum of its parts, and the colors here are really pretty, but the sharp folds in this shade look a little abrasive to me. Light Up Your Life (and Kitchen Table) With Geeky Lampshades

Sometimes simple design is better than intricate, and that's why I'm loving these geeky lampshades!

Sometimes simple design is better than intricate, and that's why I'm loving these geeky lampshades! Simple and handmade, these shades are crafted from wire and fabric and feature a few geeky designs.

There's the Space Invaders theme at right and also shades featuring the Gmap location pin, shades featuring the F1 and F2 brightness keys on the Apple keyboard, and one featuring the RSS reader icon. Shades can be constructed either as tabletop fixtures or hanging lamps. At $70 each, they're a bit pricey, but I haven't seen anything similar, so if you love them, I say it's worth a splurge.

Cool Idea: Lamp Kit Hanging Light

I spotted this photo in the portfolio of interior stylist and designer Sibella Court, and was wowed by the hanging light fixture.

I spotted this photo in the portfolio of interior stylist and designer Sibella Court, and was wowed by the hanging light fixture. To me it looks like a lampshade was simply attached to a basic Lamp Cord Kit ($12), and then dangled from the molding. The shade would probably need to have a bulb clip top fitter, too. I love the juxtaposition of the lowbrow lamp cord with that debonair black bell-shaped shade.

I'd love to try this at home. I'm thinking of making my own with a shapely lampshade frame and a reproduction Edison bulb. What do you think?
