As part of our Styled by You $500 Giveaway with IKEA, Elka Karl and I have been thinking of ways to punch up basic Ikea products. You may have seen how I added block-printed ikat polka dots to this Asele lampshade ($15). Well, now I'm revisiting the same shade with an entirely different approach. Armed with some thin manila rope, a glue gun, and a Bran table lamp base ($20), I set out to create a nautical-inspired lamp with a modern twist.

The days are getting shorter, which means you'll need to switch on a lamp earlier in the day to get your reading done. Short on lighting sources? Fill your home with the warm glow from one of these geeky handmade lamps from Etsy.
I'm enchanted by the simultaneously earthy and ethereal appearance of designers Dan Yeffet and Lucie Koldová's Muffin Trees. These limited edition lamps are part of a limited edition run, and found in the art collection for Gallery Bensimon. These lamps, which were based on another collection of lights launched last year by the designing duo, are produced by Czech manufacturer Brokis uniquely for Gallery S. Bensimon in Paris. Featuring handblown violet, clear, and umber glass shades and naturally waxed, oak wood bases, each lamp is numbered and signed. This is truly a case of a home accent doubling as art. The scale, as well as the handcrafted details, really make these lamps a showstopper. Are you a fan of them as well?
Designer David Trubridge crafts stunning, organic lamps that reflect the flora and fauna of his beloved home country of New Zealand. For Milan Design Week, he featured a stunningly supersize version of his Koura lamp.
All of Trubridge's lamps arrive unassembled and flatpacked into individual pieces, and much like a puzzle, must be pieced together. The flatpack design helps to reduce freight costs and packaging needs, thus adding to the eco cred of the lamps.
According to the designer, “Koura is the Maori name for the small fresh water shrimps that live in our rivers. They curl up in this shape. This shape is mirrored again in the similar woven traps used for catching them.” To see what the lamp looked like in the space in Milan, keep reading.
