Honeycomb's big these days on contemporary cheese platters, and I just recently had a chance to try it myself. At Samovar Tea Lounge, the unrefined nectar was served on a wooden carving board alongside a crumbly blue cheese and crackers, making for a rustic appetizer.
It wasn't until I took my first bite that I realized how waxy honeycomb can be. After a lengthy amount of chewing, I wasn't so sure if what remained was meant to be consumed. The Motorola Xoom is finally available to the masses tomorrow — although it looks like it'll have a short time in the spotlight before the iPad 2 competes for attention. This morning at Google HQ, we got a tour of the new Android Honeycomb OS. While I'm anxiously awaiting a hands-on demo (pics and videos to come!), here are just a few images of what the new system looks like. We've talked a lot about the various Android OS updates over the past year, but it's the 3.0 (codename: Honeycomb) that's going to start 2011 off right. Why is it so different from other Android versions? Well for starters, it's made with tablets in mind, so you get a sleek and totally workable interface without sacrificing the ease of Google and Android. Motorola's Xoom, which is the first tablet to run Honeycomb, debuted last night and is coming with some impressive specs, including a dual-core processor!
Of course, Honeycomb integrates Google products like Gmail, Maps, Video Chat, and Books seamlessly, and you can stay on-task and efficient with multiple virtual desktop areas to work in. Besides the fact that the video looks like Tron, (which is all the rage these days), Honeycomb looks pretty amazing. Check it out in the quick demo video after the break.
I love the buzz-worthy motif on the Honeycomb Doormat ($32) from Burke Decor. It's a fun, graphic pattern that I adore everywhere from bolsters to rugs. As a bold print on sheets and pillows, the hexagonal design can mix things up in rooms filled with stripes or florals. The structural replication of the bee hangout can also be integrated more discreetly, as in the unusual Softseating furniture. Whether you want to dress your walls in the hexagonal pattern or just incorporate subtle trinkets adorned with the motif, ogle some of my sticky sweet faves below.
I'm sorry to say this, Mr. Bolster, but you have little functional value, aside from aesthetics and an elbow rest every now and then. So I have a hard time dropping big bucks on you. However, if you're outfitted with a cool honeycomb pattern, a handsome espresso color, and if you don't break the bank like Monsieur West Elm Honeycomb Print Bolster ($19.99) then I'll gladly snatch two of you up. Just don't let it go to your head or anything because, after all, you are just a pillow.
Tomás Gabzdil Libertiny did not make this vase. He "collaborated" with an army of 40,000 bees to make it. Instead of using a traditional artificial beehive, Libertiny designed a vase-shaped mold for a beehive, and gave his busy bees one week to work their sweet magic. The process, which he calls "slow protyping," pushes the boundaries of conventional design and completely reinvents something which has forever been man-made. I think my excitement over honeycomb has reached its maximum; it cannot get any better than this.
If I hadn't drilled it in with my recent Steal of the Day that I'm gaga for hexagons, you should know that I'm irrationally enthusiastic about this Paul Marra Black and White Lacquered Bone Chest ($5,200). Add my love of anything high gloss, the unusual skeleton-key fastening, and the trendy black and white elegance of this chest, and you can safely say that I've been swept off my feet. I guess I'm hooked on honeycomb.
I may be biased because I grew up with a beekeeper father who wore a full-body bee suit and churned out bear-shaped jars of honey, but I'm sweet on the hexagonal pattern of honeycomb. If you had chicken-coop wire window and picked up this Company Store Honeycomb Rug ($58.99 - $256.99), I might just have to sting you out of jealousy. I'd caution against purchasing the 8-x-10 size though, the bold pattern and colors might overpower your room, giving you a buzzing headache.
