Cool Idea: Create the Illusion of a Sky-High Headboard

I did a double take when I first saw this striking image on interior designer Amanda Nisbet's website, I couldn't tell from the first split second if the pink pattern was a wall treatment or an elaborate headboard.

I did a double take when I first saw this striking image on interior designer Amanda Nisbet's website, I couldn't tell from the first split second if the pink pattern was a wall treatment or an elaborate headboard. I suppose it's both, really. The architectural details of the ornate, wooden facade mimic a headboard brilliantly. I'm convinced, though, that a similar look could be achieved with more simple built-in shelves surrounding a bed like she does here.

Just imagine the possibilities – a stretched tapestry, stenciled pattern, wallpaper, upholstery – they're endless!

DIY a Headboard From Rope

Here's a post from CasaSugar Community member ourfifthhouse from the Su Casa group:

I needed a headboard for the king size bed in our guest room. I wanted something with a natural look and lots of texture. I wasn't able to find anything within my budget, so I DIY'ed a headboard with an old door that was collecting dust in my garage, some manila rope from Home Depot, and about five tons of hot glue.  Okay, maybe not five tons, but it was a lot.

Three Options For Re-Creating the Yellow Headboards From Season 9 of Project Runway

For season 9 of Project Runway, the designers are housed once again at the Atlas New York.

For season 9 of Project Runway, the designers are housed once again at the Atlas New York. The rooms this year are a bit more design-forward than they were in the past, though somewhat "safe," as the judges might say — standing out neither in a good nor a bad way. You can't argue with the yellow and gray color palette, though I'm dying for a little more pop of contrasting color somewhere in the room. The one element that I truly loved was the pattern-forward yellow headboards. Designer Anya Ayoung-Chee, shown seated on one of the beds, certainly surprised me in last night's premiere episode — I couldn't believe that she'd only been sewing for a few months. And even without sewing skills, she, or anyone else able to follow a few simple steps, such as this DIY upholstered headboard tutorial, could easily upholster her own bed to create something similar to the designers' rooms at the Atlas. I've found three fabrics that are close matches to the fabric used in the headboards from the show. Combine the fabric with a tutorial and a free afternoon, and you've got yourself a beautiful new headboard.

My favorite fabric choice is this Yellow Circles Fabric ($32 per yard for upholstery weight fabric) from Spoonflower. Its aesthetic and modern geometric patterns are an edgier take on the show's headboards. Keep reading for two more fabrics that reflect the headboards seen on Project Runway, including the exact match.

10 Fantastic Headboards Made From Salvaged Wood

Call it recycling, upcycling, reclaiming, or salvaging.
Salvaged Wood Headboard DIYs

Call it recycling, upcycling, reclaiming, or salvaging. No matter how you define it, building furniture out of old wood is a major trend at the moment. In the past few days alone, I've seen a sofa made out of wooden pallets at a chic restaurant and a bench made from wood from a barn's haymow. There are plenty of ways that you can adapt the trend in your home, but headboards are currently topping my list. I've seen so many beautiful uses of reclaimed wood in the bedroom, and even better, many of these projects are relatively easy to DIY yourself. Come along for a peek at some inspiring DIYs (oh, and you can always just buy it readymade, too).

DIY a Panel Headboard From Cabinet Doors

Here's a post from CasaSugar Community member remodelthishouse from the Su Casa group: I love a panel headboard with clean lines and routered detail; however, I don't like the price of a new headboard.

Here's a post from CasaSugar Community member remodelthishouse from the Su Casa group:

I love a panel headboard with clean lines and routered detail; however, I don't like the price of a new headboard. So I decided to build a panel headboard . . . out of kitchen cabinet doors. I bought the cabinet doors for $5 from my local Habitat ReStore. And just so you know, I am not a builder and probably shouldn't be allowed to use power tools without supervision; I get a little too confident and everything gets a good dose of power tool, even if it doesn't need it. I didn't use any plans to build this. I just laid out the doors and started nailing boards together. I love the outcome! For more details, check out Remodel This House.
