In honor of Target's upcoming opening in East Harlem, the mass retailer has created the Harlem Designer Collections, a limited-edition line spanning across various categories and reflecting the vibrant spirit of Harlem. The fashion category is led by designer couple Isabel and Ruben Toledo — Michelle Obama has worn Isabel's pieces — and includes swimwear, t-shirts, beach towels, and frocks. Starting Aug. 1, you can pick up the affordable, bold pieces through Target.com, and all the while, give back; Target will donate 5 percent of each product's purchase to Isabel and Ruben's nonprofit of choice, El Museo del Barrio.

500 Guns Swapped For Cash in Harlem: Are Buybacks Good?

In tough economic times, people are trying to make money any way they can — and one surprising example sneaks in community service too.

In tough economic times, people are trying to make money any way they can — and one surprising example sneaks in community service too. In Harlem this weekend, five churches offered cash for weapons – no questions asked. Rifles, handguns, and shotguns were brought to the churches on Saturday and in return the unarmed were given a $200 bank card.

This program, sponsored by the NYPD and Manhattan DA’s office, was created over a dozen years ago in an effort to get guns off the streets and has been met with great success. So far about 5,000 have been removed from New York and over 500 of those in this last buyback. Two weeks ago Brooklyn churches purchased over 400 firearms.

Critics and proponents are at odds over the efficacy of gun buyback programs. Skeptics say, "It's like trying to drain the Pacific with a bucket. More guns are going to flow in." Though Oakland held a popular buyback this Spring where more than 1,000 guns were swapped for $170,000. Is cash an effective way to drain dangerous weapons from the streets?

Coveted Crib: Chez Sheila Bridges

You may remember interior designer Sheila Bridges from our Designer Spotlight or from Domino and ELLE Decor, or her spot on the Fine Living network. Voted one of America's best designers, she can transform any space with a bold use of color and whimsical accents, while maintaining a traditional sensibility. She doesn't reserve these techniques solely for her clients though; her Harlem apartment is perhaps the best illustration of her knack for design. New York Social Diary not so recently had an interesting interview with Sheila and captured many wonderful images of her Harlem apartment. My favorite room by far has to be her study, which she had painted with quotes from her favorite books. But there are wonderful, creative touches and patterns everywhere, which refuse to let your eyes rest. Take a peek at this slideshow to see it, and be sure to read the interview.
