Police Capture Second Boston Marathon Suspect Alive

Police have successfully captured the second suspect in the Boston Marathon bombing alive.

Police have successfully captured the second suspect in the Boston Marathon bombing alive. This came during a frightening day that found the Boston metro area on lockdown. After an extensive manhunt that left one suspect, 26-year-old Tamerlan Tsarnaev, dead, authorities found younger brother and second suspect, 19-year-old Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, hiding out in a boat in Watertown, MA. The Boston Police Department tweeted, "CAPTURED!!! The hunt is over. The search is done. The terror is over. And justice has won. Suspect in custody."

Dzhokhar Tsarnaev and his brother are alleged to have carried out Monday's bombing that left three dead and over 100 injured. He has been taken into custody and to the hospital. Crowds gathered near the police showdown reacted with relief that Dzhokhar Tsarnaev has been caught.

Boston on Lockdown as Search For Second Suspect Continues

Update: The lockdown has been lifted and public transport restored.

Update: The lockdown has been lifted and public transport restored. Authorities believe they have located the remaining suspected, who is reportedly hiding in a boat.

Residents of Boston and its surrounding towns are on lockdown as police search for a second suspect in Monday's marathon bombings. Massachusetts Gov. Deval Patrick has told residents to "stay indoors, with their doors locked." As the story develops, here's what we know:

  • The prime suspects, Tamerlan and Dzhokhar Tsarnayev, were involved in violent exchanges with police last night that left older brother Tamerlan, 26, dead. Dzhokhar, 19, is now on the loose.
  • The brothers' photos were released Thursday night by the FBI. Soon violence began in Cambridge when the brothers allegedly shot and killed an MIT police officer and then hijacked a car, keeping the driver with them. She escaped unharmed after a half-hour. When police caught up with the brothers, they began to throw explosives out of the car and engaged in a fire fight with police. As Dzhokhar escaped, he ran over his wounded brother, who later died.
  • Dzhokhar, still at large, is a student at University of Massachusetts, Dartmouth. The school was being evacuated this morning.
  • WBUR radio host Robin Young says she knows Dzhokhar, as he is a best friend of her nephew. She described him as "the light of the party . . . a beautiful, beautiful boy." Some who know him are shocked by the developments, and a high school classmate of Dzhokhar called him a normal American kid.
  • An uncle of the suspects called the brothers "losers" and urged Dzhokhar to turn himself in. Yet his father, who was contacted living in Russia, called his son "a true angel." An aunt has also spoken out, saying they're innocent and that the older brother was "married to a Christian" and had a 3-year-old daughter.
  • The suspects and their family reportedly legally immigrated to Cambridge, MA, in 2003 from Kyrgyzstan, where the older brother was born. According to their uncle, Dzhokhar Tsarnaev was born in Dagestan. They are reportedly of Chechen origin.
  • Bombing victim Jeff Bauman helped identify the suspects. After coming to, he wrote a note: "bag, saw the guy, looked right at me."

Love and Sex

Bostonians Would Give Up Sex Over Cell Phones

What does it say about the future of the human race when people would rather give up sex for a year than go without a cell phone for the same amount of time?

What does it say about the future of the human race when people would rather give up sex for a year than go without a cell phone for the same amount of time? I guess it means that technological communication is truly becoming more important than old-fashioned face-to-face interaction, even the type of face-to-face interaction that involves having sex. Come on, people! What good is a booty call without the booty? Is sexting really better than sex?

In a survey sponsored by none other than Samsung Mobile, 31 percent of adults in Boston said they would rather give up sex for a year than go without cell phones for a year. Apparently, relying on email, hard-to-find pay phones, and immobile landlines is much more burdensome than forgoing sex.

Considering that I know people who literally sleep with their BlackBerrys, I suppose I'm not really that shocked by these results.

If you live in the Boston area you may be familiar with Chef Michael Schlow.
A James Beard Award-winning chef, Schlow owns three wildly successful restaurants: Radius, Via Matta, and Great Bay. Although I've never dined at one of Schlow's establishments, I recently got my hands on his cookbook, It's About Time ($24.71).

Different from most cookbooks, this tome is not separated into courses. Instead each section represents a specific time — be it a cooking time (Time to Eat and Now) or a time in one's life (Time to Celebrate). To find out more about this excellent cookbook, read more

Su Casa member Whittle03 and her boyfriend just moved to a new apartment near downtown Boston, and although her interior design work is not complete, things are looking great! A successful cohabitation is always a difficult balance when it comes to design, but Whittle03 sounds like she has it under control. She says, "Love is all about compromise. I hate leather, but my boyfriend loves it. So, I tried to find something more streamlined." Clearly, in this living room she's balanced a leather sofa, chair, and storage ottoman with other textiles on her cushions, throw, and silk lamps shades. I think her living room manages not to look overly feminine or masculine. And, although it certainly looks like a cozy lounging spot, it is also quite polished and neat. When a friend moves away, it's nice to let them know how much they'll be missed by hosting a bon voyage fiesta. Su Casa member Scolls1583 recently snapped some photos at a friend's beach house party in Boston, and was so impressed she decided to share! She says that the host basically built his backyard area "from the ground up . . . put in a pool, built a bar, and decorated with great furniture." I'm certainly wowed by this home; it looks like the perfect place to entertain during an endless Summer. Aside from the obvious coveted Summer features (pool and beach), he's set up plenty of comfortable seating for all of his guests, what looks like a firepit or grill (in foreground), a volleyball net (not shown), and a beer pong table. Can anyone say PARTY?! If you're interested in posting pictures of superb pads like this, make sure to join my Su Casa group!

  • US Economy Grows: The Commerce Department reported today that economic growth was measured at a 0.9 percent growth rate. The growth was a slightly better pace in the first quarter, though still weak and hindered by cautious consumers hurt by housing, credit and financial problems. • Suicide Bomb Kills 16 in Iraq: A suicide bomber detonated today in a crowd of police recruits in northwestern Iraq, killing at least 16 and wounding 14 others. The blast occurred in Sinjar, the town that also saw a series of suicide truck bombings that killed an estimated 500 people.
