How to Take a Screenshot on Any Device

Sometimes, the easiest way to share a funny conversation or picture is to take a screenshot and send it off.

Sometimes, the easiest way to share a funny conversation or picture is to take a screenshot and send it off. There are lots of options for screenshots: you can grab the entire screen or just a selection, and choose to save it to the desktop or the clipboard.

Here, find out everything you wanted to know (and more) about taking a screenshot on an iOS, Mac OS X, Android, or Windows device, and discover two cool apps that will upload your image to the web automatically for speedy sharing.

iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch

Press the Home button and the sleep/wake button at the same time to capture whatever is on the screen. The image will be saved to your Camera Roll.

Mac OS X

To take a screenshot, you can open the Grab application or use one of these keyboard shortcuts (to cancel out of any command, press escape).

  • The entire screen — Press command + shift + 3
  • A select portion of the screen — Press command + shift + 4
  • Only a window — Press command + shift + 4 + space bar and select the window. It also works with the menu bar. This option will capture a window's shadows which looks nice in presentations.

The default setting on Mac OS X is to save the screen capture to your desktop, but you can save the image to your clipboard instead by holding down the control key while you press the other keys as listed above. This will enable you to paste the image into a document.

Apps exist that will automatically upload your screen capture to the Internet. Cloud App is a Mac desktop client that sits in your menu bar and will create a link to the image, then put it onto your clipboard. The app will notify you when the image is done uploading, and you can paste the link wherever you want. Droplr is similar: drag screen captures into the app, and Droplr will create a link for you to share.

Check out these shortcuts to wipe away windows and clear the way for desktop access on Mac OS X, MacBooks/MacBook Pros, and Windows 8.

Show Desktop App

  • Show Desktop is a free app for Mac users that will hide all applications and show the desktop when clicked. It can run in the menu bar or dock.

Mac OS X Mountain Lion (10.8) Hotkeys

  • Mission Control — In System Preferences by "Show Desktop," choose between a variety of F keys or mouse click + command shortcuts. Click on the "Hot Corners" button on the bottom left of Mission Control to enable show desktop. When you drag your mouse to the designated hot corner, the windows will clear, and you'll see your desktop. Moving the mouse back to that corner will make the windows reappear.

Mac OS X 10.7 and Earlier Hotkeys

  • Exposé — If you can't find Mission Control in System Preferences, then look for Exposé. You will be able to set the key or trigger of your choice to show the desktop.

Blueberries, blackberries, beets and turmeric aren't just ingredients for a Summer meal — they're also the basis for the beautiful designs behind Anthropologie's Summer windows. Inspired by Sasha Duerr's Permacouture Institute, these crafted gardens not only look beautiful, but their pretty tinted petals and stems also are naturally dyed with fruits, vegetables, and spices.

As the founder and codirector of the Permacouture Institute, Sasha is an expert on regenerative design in fashion and textiles. When we asked her about the Anthropologie collaboration, she told us, "The project was a collaboration with [Anthropologie's] window display team . . . They fell in love with natural dyes as a medium to experiment with and came across the New York Times article we were featured in and became more intrigued with the larger, growing movement of growing your own color — as well as the social and ecological benefits."

Check out the amazing variation of natural dye colors when you explore the window displays at Anthropologie stores across the country.

Create Gorgeous Custom Roman Blinds (Without Sewing!)

Roman blinds are a wonderful option if you're looking to add pattern or color to windows, but prefer a more tailored look than curtains.

Roman blinds are a wonderful option if you're looking to add pattern or color to windows, but prefer a more tailored look than curtains. Unlike curtains, roman blinds require a more precise fit, and custom options are usually pretty pricey. Blogger Cindy Berisic envisioned covering the windows in her office with roman blinds in a hot pink and white pattern. She shared her brilliant roman shades DIY with us, and we're so inspired by her technique that we wanted to also share it with you! The Premier Prints Gotcha White/Candy Pink fabric she chose is just under $8 per yard. Once she had her fabric, all she needed was measuring tape, scissors, fabric glue, and miniblinds. Keep reading to get Cindy's detailed step-by-step instructions. Take it away, Cindy!

Do You Have Bay Windows?

A bay window is a three-sided window with one panel parallel to the walls inside and two that are angled in toward the room.

A bay window is a three-sided window with one panel parallel to the walls inside and two that are angled in toward the room. While these windows may add an additional two or three feet of space to a room, visually, they create the illusion of a much larger room. And perhaps the greatest perk is that the angled windows offer a view of the street or outdoor space that can't be achieved with a traditional window — that is, unless you want to poke your head outside an open window.

The architectural style is often associated with Victorian and Edwardian architecture and is quite common in San Francisco. So, I am lucky enough to have several bay windows in my home! Do you have any?

Casa Quickie: Save It For a Cloudy Day

If you're tempted to clean windows (and really, who isn't?), save the task for a cloudy day.

If you're tempted to clean windows (and really, who isn't?), save the task for a cloudy day. Why? A sunny day may cause your window to streak. This is because your cleaning spray will often dry on the window before it can be wiped off.

Remember to clean the windows on both sides, using horizontal strokes on the outside and vertical on the inside. This way, if any streaks do remain, you'll know which side needs to be touched up.

Do you have any other clever tips for cleaning windows?

There's a new trojan virus on the block, and instead of infecting your computer with malware or copying your data, it's actually stealing your money. Over 3,000 people in the UK have already been emptied of nearly $1 million dollars to date from the Zeus3 trojan, and while this sounds like the perfect time to panic, the only "silver lining" for the rest of us is that the trojan has affected customers from just one online banking system . . . so far.

There is one major problem, though. Find out what it is, and how the trojan works when you read more.

Before and After: Windows Turned Wall Art

Here's a post from CasaSugar Community member CaraWilkerson from the Su Casa group: When I stumbled across this fine trio of old windows at the Habitat for Humanity ReStore last week, they had to be mine.

Here's a post from CasaSugar Community member CaraWilkerson from the Su Casa group:

When I stumbled across this fine trio of old windows at the Habitat for Humanity ReStore last week, they had to be mine. $10 later I was cruising home with my new best friends in tow . . .

Clearly hanging these guys would require more than a nail or two so the proper hardware was a must. Opting for hooks and hinges that would allow the windows to be easily tilted/removed for cleaning was high on my list. More time consuming to install but ultimately worth the hassle.
