Quote Of The Day: 'The Moment' On Chanel Cruise 2010

First it was New York and then Monte Carlo.
First it was New York and then Monte Carlo. Miami and then Moscow. And last night, Venice. (We are talking Venice, Italy, not Venice, California.) Karl took each one of these trips as everything else in his life, with great connoisseurship and grandeur, going deep into the theme and each time merging the Chanel spirit with the local flavor. The production value was always outrageous — even more so in these economic times. Venice had a lot to offer for Karl’s appetite.
Derek Lam

Quote Of The Day: Derek Lam Opens Up Shop, Plans For The Future

One of the important things was to not just put in a white box.
One of the important things was to not just put in a white box. Even though the majority is white, we were going for a cleanness and modern simplicity while still being able to tell that you are in New York and in SoHo because of the cast iron we preserved in the space. We didn’t just want to do a branded store, where if we also open a store in Paris and L.A. that they would all look the same. Of course we want it to have a Derek Lam signature to it, but it becomes boring when the stores look all the same — like duty-free.

Quote Of The Day: On Magazine Covers Past And Present

By today’s standards, the cover of a fashion magazine is about as creative as baby formula.
By today’s standards, the cover of a fashion magazine is about as creative as baby formula. There’s the requisite torso (airbrushed to a fair thee well) positioned to allow for the requisite cover lines, which more often than not contain the number 25. Now compare that to the Vogue cover of January 1950: Jean Patchett’s face reduced to a beauty mark, mouth, eye, brow and nose. If ever there were a visual haiku, this is it. Woman distilled to her essence; the sum of her parts more alluring than the whole.

Quote Of The Day: Henri Bendel Hosts Their Semi-Annual "Open-See"

A 13-year-old girl wearing a plaid skirt and braces was playing hooky from school to show the line of jewelry that she had been working on “all her life.”... A few rings were selected, and phone numbers were exchanged with her mother.

Cool Idea: Fireplace Painting

For those of you with a decorative mantelpiece, or just a nonfunctioning fireplace, you can still have a roaring fire without installing a chimney.

For those of you with a decorative mantelpiece, or just a nonfunctioning fireplace, you can still have a roaring fire without installing a chimney. Brand consultancy firm Partners & Spade has commissioned artist Ann Wood to create custom hearth paintings made to measure for your mantel with prices beginning at $1,500. Customers can specify the style of the andirons and mantel border, and even the color of the flames. Before you wait the estimated four to five weeks for completion, though, if you're in the NYC area, check out the real thing at the Partners & Spade outpost at 40 Great Jones Street. How 'bout that for throwing Wood on the fire?
