Desire/Acquire: Origami Pendant

The perfect mashup of Japanese cool and midcentury style, origami pendants add sculptural elegance to any space.

The perfect mashup of Japanese cool and midcentury style, origami pendants add sculptural elegance to any space. Made popular by George Nelson (Herman Miller's design director from 1946 to 1972), this saucer-shaped pendant from Design Within Reach is the sort of investment piece that never goes out of style. The crisscross pattern looks spectacular when illuminated, but it's even lovely during daylight hours. Still, the $359 price tag categorizes it as a lighting fixture you'll be committing to for a while.

If you like keeping your options open, design-wise, allow us to introduce you to an option that doesn't require plunking down triple digits worth of dough.

Brighten Your Home For Spring With 6 Pieces From Serena & Lily

Spring is here! From a retail perspective, at least, and the timing couldn't be more perfect.

Spring is here! From a retail perspective, at least, and the timing couldn't be more perfect. With the tinsel stashed and the new year in full swing, we're looking for decor that feels more transitional than the standard pastel and floral offerings of the season. Enter Serena & Lily. While you can still pick up softer, Spring-inspired pieces like the brand's swiss dot curtains, it's the saturated colors, graphic prints, and organic textures in its latest collection that really shine.

Real Mom Gift Guide: All Serena Dugan of Serena & Lily Wants For the Holidays Is . . .

Serena Dugan, one half of the duo behind the gorgeous mom-friendly bedding, furniture, and decor line Serena & Lily, has a background as a textile designer and artist.

Serena Dugan, one half of the duo behind the gorgeous mom-friendly bedding, furniture, and decor line Serena & Lily, has a background as a textile designer and artist. In 2003, she stumbled into Lily Kanter's Mill Valley, CA, baby boutique, and the two got to talking about a void in the marketplace for truly special crib bedding. Eight months later, they launched their first line together. The rest, as they say, is history!

Serena & Lily's fresh approach to design is responsible for some of the most beautiful nurseries, kids rooms, and now, adult spaces — in the country. The brand's combination of original prints and patterns; comfortable, lived-in feel; and worldly aesthetic has garnered the attention of some of the industry's top editors and tastemakers.

Needless to say, Serena has impeccable taste. Check out what's on her holiday wish list this year!

Guess What Inspired This Hanging Lamp?

This new hanging lamp from Serena & Lily, which is hand-woven from organic materials, is named for an element in nature. The same element in nature also inspired the Beijing National Stadium, which was used for the 2008 Summer Olympics. Can you guess what inspired this hanging lamp (and the stadium)?

5 Fun Facts About the Serena & Lily Showroom

Yesterday, I motored over to Sausalito, CA, to meet Lily Kanter and take a turn around the Serena & Lily showroom.

Yesterday, I motored over to Sausalito, CA, to meet Lily Kanter and take a turn around the Serena & Lily showroom. Once there, I was greeted by Lily Kanter herself, who showed me around the impeccably styled showroom. It was great to have the opportunity to check out all of the goods in person, and I came away from my visit with a lot of interesting tidbits about the showroom, the company, and the people behind it.

Here are my top five fun facts about the visit:

  • Serena and Lily bonded over their shared desire for better options in nursery bedding, and since that first collection, the ideas just keep getting better and better. In fact, the two new nursery bedding collections I peeked at are my favorite yet (and sorry, that's a total teaser, since I can't show you any images yet).
  • However, I can show you two new furniture lines that will be available in January. Representing opposite ends of the  spectrum (one urban with a smaller silhouette, the other sprawling and more country-inspired), they're identical in one sense:  their beautiful design. The photo above is actually of one of the chairs. I'll show you more pictures tomorrow, so check back.
  • Lily, who gave me a tour around the showroom, is a mom through and through. She happily approved my request to bring along my baby and entertained him with cuddles and sweet nothings while we were there.
  • There's simply no way to appreciate the quality of the Serena & Lily product line from the catalog alone. As beautifully styled as the online and print catalog is, nothing beats touching the textiles and furniture pieces in person. They're even more lovely than you'd imagine from the photos.
  • I also got to check out the chunky wool throw from our Facebook giveaway. The open weave knit and thick wool used in its design is infinitely cozy.

Nice and New: Serena & Lily Senegalese Storage Baskets

Serena & Lily's new Senegalese Storage Baskets ($68-$148, or $290 for three) are my latest must-have crush.

Serena & Lily's new Senegalese Storage Baskets ($68-$148, or $290 for three) are my latest must-have crush. I can't imagine a storage basket any prettier than these beauties, and it's no wonder: they're handcrafted by artisans in Africa, and no two are alike. Better yet, they're made from brightly colored recycled plastic around coils of natural fiber so they're eco-friendly, too! Considering how trendy chevron is these days, I'm sure they'll be a hit. I love how each zig zag pattern is unique; owning the trio gives them a more playful look.

Always looking for a place to stash the surplus of throws in my living room, I think the large or medium Senegalese basket is the perfect candidate. My only trouble is which hue shall I choose? The baskets are available in pink, blue, and navy/green. Which is your favorite?
