Scandinavian Style: Overseas Inspiration For Your On-Trend Tot

Don't get us wrong, we love shopping "Made in America," but when it comes to style inspiration for our tots, it's hard to ignore the influence of Scandinavian design.

Don't get us wrong, we love shopping "Made in America," but when it comes to style inspiration for our tots, it's hard to ignore the influence of Scandinavian design. From Fair Isle knits to bold, graphic prints and patterns, brands in Sweden and Denmark are especially appealing for trendy little tots — and don't get us started on the toys!

With a strong preference toward soft, organic cottons and durable, high-quality wood, Scandinavian playthings tend toward the timeless classics, as opposed to being plastic and "of the moment." Check out some of our favorite overseas inspiration from the northern European nations.

Designer Kim Samson certainly loves the outdoors no matter what the weather is, and she brings the outdoors in to her white-based and so Scandinavian house. Sheep outside as well as sheep inside in the form of rugs is a major theme in this funky home. And all, of course, with the always fashionable, uber-chic and rustic Nordic touch . . .

Fresh, Inspirational Kitchen Decor

Here's a post from OnSugar blog House of Anais: This kitchen is so chic and inspiring.

Here's a post from OnSugar blog House of Anais:

This kitchen is so chic and inspiring. The kitchen itself is rather simple and streamlined with a painted wood floor and oak and glossy white cabinets, and the atmosphere was created using colourful accent cushions, the roller blind and flowers.

This means that the look can be easily changed for special occasions and seasons. Just love this freshness and great use of colors!

A Fabulous House Exterior Before and After

Here's a post from OnSugar blog House of Anais: What do you think about this transformation of a Swedish house?

Here's a post from OnSugar blog House of Anais:

What do you think about this transformation of a Swedish house? From drab to fab, I would say!

This house was before a mustard-colored box with no defined floors in its façade and tiny windows. The after state gives a promise of country romance with its larger paned windows and that grand entrance with double doors and mansion-like columns. There are also those lovely side additions of covered porches on both sides. I would declare this transformation as a total success!

Get the Look: A Holiday Enchanted Forest

I was so smitten with the cozy, holiday décor in this magical forest-inspired living room from Swedish design magazine Skona Hem, I thought I'd help you re-create the look! The plaid pillows, cozy throws, and luxurious velvet warm up the sofa and rocking chair.

And I love the wooden bench as coffee table, topped with a rustic vessel filled with moss and candles. Some sweet faux taxidermy on the walls, a hanging copper pendant light, and a slew of mismatched green glass containers round out the earthy feel. For a festive touch, dress up the mini "Christmas trees" with small silver ball ornaments. Shop the rest of this scene below:

Get the Look: Refreshing Scandinavian Sitting Room

There's something about Scandinavian interiors that makes me feel as if I've just taken a deep breath of clean, crisp air.

There's something about Scandinavian interiors that makes me feel as if I've just taken a deep breath of clean, crisp air. This whitewashed sitting room that I found in the pages of Sköna Hem is no exception. From its comfortable reading chair to its easy access to the great outdoors, this room looks like a perfect place for relaxing and regrouping.
To get the look, start with a crisp white paint — you'll need enough of it to cover the floorboards, walls, and ceilings! For the floorboards, you'll first have to remove the finish from your wood floors, then apply whitewash and a varnish on the top. For the floors and ceiling, a few coats of a high-quality white paint, such as Benjamin Moore's Aura paint in Frostline, should do the trick.

After you've finished painting, you'll have to get busy with populating your space. Luckily, I can help you out on that front. Check out the rest of the look below.

Get the Look: Scandinavian Kitchen

I spotted this charming kitchen in Skona Hem, and was instantly compelled to change the entire design scheme of my kitchen, thanks to its pretty, Scandinavian look.

I love the color palette here, which is overwhelmingly white and blue. However, those colors are broken up by the retro pink Smeg fridge ($2,000). If you want another color, no worries; the Smeg is avialable in a rainbow of shades.

Vintage Swedish Coffee Service

Here's a post from CasaSugar Community member dezignerwannabe from the Scandinavian Style group:

Yesterday a box was delivered to our house and when I opened it, much to my surprise I found my mother's "Hackefors"  Coffee Service set.

My mother is retiring back home to Sweden at the end of this month and she wanted to surprise me for my birthday by giving me her "kaffe servis" by Hackefors Porslin. Although it's not complete (after 30 years in Southern California earthquakes not much survives) I love it! I don't know much about the pattern which is "Nyponros" from 1980. I've even looked at their website, but it's not listed there anymore.

As it turns out, I'm having a girlie re-gifting party this afternoon with champagne and cupcakes so I can't wait to use it!
